Focusing on the wear mechanisms and extracting the tribological information during the friction are the prerequisites for extending the service life and carrying out the fault diagnosis prediction of rotary vane seals. Four different sizes of iron particles were selected to mix with the same volume of hydraulic oil to explore the effect of lubricating oil containing abrasive particles on the wear behaviors of the seal. The tribological behaviors during friction were comprehensively analyzed, including the coefficient of friction (COF), wear volume, surface topography, vibration, noise, and other information. The results demonstrated that the wear characteristics of the seal’s contact surfaces changed obviously. The wear morphologies, coefficients of friction, surface roughnesses, and vibration signals increased with the increase of the abrasive particles’ size, with the wear state gradually worsening. When the iron particle size reached 160 μm, the COF increased by 0.047, and the peak vibration signal increased from 4.31 to 36.97 m/s2, compared with pure hydraulic oil lubrication. This tribological information could disclose the wear mechanisms of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) and reveal the TPU wear states. Determining the tribological information for the rubbing pairs was a potential and effective way for evaluating or predicting the rotary vane steering gear seals’ wear states or failure modes. Finding the tribological characteristics of polymers, such as friction and wear, proved difficult for scratch approaches. This study tested constant loading scratch with Rockwell indenter on the polymeric surface to develop an accessible wear and friction calculation model. Scratch load, speed, and passes, three primary factors are considered to observe the polymers' response, particularly in terms of width, penetration depth, residual depth, and percentage of recovery. Considering all these scratch parameters, the experiments are conducted on five polymers: poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene (PTFE), poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK), polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA). The scratch characteristics are considered to calculate the friction coefficient and wear throughout the scratching process. Increased groove width, penetration depth, residual depth, and a decrease in recovery percentage are the effects of number of scratch passes. The strain hardening caused by the multiple movements of the indenter on the same grooves causes a behavior change. With an increase in the scratch pass, the coefficient of friction falls and stabilizes, and the volumetric wear increases, suggesting that more scratch passes will cause more material loss. This study derived two distinct models by applying the least square curve fitting technique to evaluate friction and material wear characteristics. Two types of vein-bionic texture patterns derived from five kinds of leaves namely Forsythia, Clausena lansium, Ash, Pipal, and Apricot were prepared on the raceway of the shaft washer of cylindrical roller thrust bearings (CRTBs) by a fiber laser marking system. A vertical universal wear test rig with a customized tribo-pair was used to measure the coefficients of friction (COFs) of bearings under starved lubrication. The wear losses of shaft washer, cage, and housing washer were obtained, respectively, and the worn surfaces were characterized. The results show that the total wear losses for CRTB system were dominated by losses of the cage under starved lubrication. The lubricant impacted by different vein-bionic textures play a more significant role in generating the preferable nylon film instead of the amount of nylon powder. Additionally, larger area nylon film was observed for vein-bionic textures with no-chief vein, which correlates with larger wear losses for whole CRTB system.
