Fresh vegetables are important healthy diet, however in recent years there has been an increased number of reported cases of food-borne intestinal illness linked to fresh vegetables. A total of 120 batches of different vegetables were randomly selected from open markets of three States-Lagos, Oyo and Kwara. The samples were processed using sedimentation by centrifugation method and examined using light microscope for ova, cysts and larva of intestinal parasites. Thirty-seven (30.3%) of the vegetables were positive for intestinal parasites in which “Shoko” (Celosis) and Water-leaf (Talinium triangure) had the highest of 66.7% and 50% respectively parasitic contamination while Water-melon (Citrullus langtus) has the least intestinal parasitic contamination (8.3%). Parasites detected were ova of Ascaris lumbricoides (12.5%), ova of Hookworm (13.3%), ova of Taenia spp (3.3%) and cysts of Balantidium coli (0.83%). The intensity of parasitic contamination of vegetable were high and the same for all the selected towns; Ibadan (30%), Ilorin (50%) and Lagos (30%). The implication and public health importance of vegetable contamination with infective stage of intestinal parasites was discussed. This study aim to determine the serum levels of trace metals and correlate same with serum levels of lipoproteins (an established marker of HBP) in newly diagnosed hypertensives (NDH) A total of 50 NDH subjects (24 males and 26 females) attending Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo were randomly selected and recruited after obtaining their informed consent. 62 consenting healthy individuals (28 males and 34 females) were recruited from member of staff as controls. Fasting blood samples were collected from subjects and controls using appropriate techniques. Serum Total cholesterol (Tc), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were estimated using commercially available kit from Randox Laboratory. Trace metals (Selenium(Se), Zinc(Zn), Cobalt(Co) and Copper(Cu)) were analyzed using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Data obtained were analyzed with the aid of SPSS statistical package version 18.0. Serum Tc and LDL-Chol were higher in subjects (5.69 ±1.40 and 3.85±0.94) mmol/l than in controls (4.53±1.30 and 2.56±1.38) mmol/l, p 0.05. Serum Tg were almost similar Preamong subjects and controls 1.40±0.21 vs 1.34±0.67mmol/l, p > 0.05. It is a member of the Hymenoptera order (which also includes bees and ants). Its consists of various proteins and enzymes. It also contains an acetylcholine-like substance, histamine, serotonin and a kinin (peptides which cause slow muscle contractions and lower the arterial blood pressure)1. In most people the wasp sting causes an initial sharp localized pain followed by swelling and itching of the affected part. We present a case of a seventeen year old male student who presented with persistently protruding ear following a wasp sting on the affected left ear ten years duration. On the protruding ear, fine needle aspiration cytology was done but the result was inconclusive. A skin snip revealed only inflammatory cells with no evidence of microfilaria. A wedged incisional biopsy of the hypertrophied pinna was done under local anaesthesia. Biopsy was taken from anterior helix and the post auricular sulci area. The Histology report revealed inflammatory cell with no evidence of malignancy. This study was carried out to determine the knowledge and attitudes of unmarried NYSC members in Lagos State to sickle cell disease and screening. This study was a cross sectional study. Multistage sampling technique was used to select the respondents. Data was collected from 220 Youth Corps Members in Lagos State using a self administered questionnaire. Almost all the respondents were aware of sickle cell but only 25.3% had good level of knowledge about it. Most of the Sicklerespondents had positive attitudes to many aspects of sickle cell disease. However, their perception of risk of the trait in relatives and partners, as well as the risk of the disease in children was very low. A structured self- administered questionnaire was used to obtain information from students of the University of Ibadan who were selected by systematic random sampling. Information was obtained on respondent's socio- demographic characteristics, lifetime and current use of psychoactive substances. The mean age of the respondents was 21.9 3.0 years. More than half (62.3%) of the respondents were males and almost all (96.9%) were single. Lifetime use of at least one psychoactive substance was reported by 58.4% of the respondents while 15.4% were current users. The common substances ever used were alcohol (40.9%), kolanut (36.4%), hypno-sedatives (13.0%) and tobacco (11.3%).The most common substance currently being used was alcohol (13.6 %), followed by kolanut (2.5%) and tobacco(2.3%). Lifetime use of alcohol was commoner among male students 45.9% compared with female students (32.8%) p=0.00, and current use of alcohol was higher among female students (16.4%) compared to males (10.2%) p=0.05. Accurate diagnosis remains a challenge, often depending on clinical/neurootological examination, often with limited availability of costly and sophisticated diagnosticfacilities, the yields of which are often low. This report aims at creating a reference database for management of vertigo in the (ORL) Clinic. This is a retrospective chart review of vertigo patients seen in ORL outpatient clinic through 2001 to 2006. Clinical/neuroo-otological examination, radiology and audiometry were the major modalities of investigation. The prevalence of vertigo in the Oto- Rhino-Laryngology outpatient Clinic was 15% (134). There were 79 males and 55 females with peak age at presentation between the 3 and 4 decade of life. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo 33 (25%), Labyrinthitis 23(17%), menieres disease 19(14%) and cervical spondylosis 14(10.5%) were the leading clinical diagnoses. Trauma accounted for 35% of the aetiological factors while17%was idiopathic. While early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to its control, anecdotal evidence has shown that there is increasing overdiagnosis of the illness. This study therefore aims to compare the outcome of laboratory and clinical diagnosis in our patients in order to determine the prevalence of laboratory confirmed malaria. A25% smear positive rate for malaria was obtained amongst a total of 419 patients recruited for the study. The over-diagnosis was more among children where a smear positive rate of 10.3%was obtained compared to 36.9% in adults. It is recommended that a laboratory confirmation must be immediately obtained before any patient is commenced on anti-malaria. Where there are doubts about the laboratory result, such patients who are smear negative should be treated in view of deep cell schizogony and high endemicity of malaria in this environment, while other causes of the symptoms are explored.
