Determination of their role in the fight against the local insurgent movement and cells of underground anti-Bolshevik organizations in the region. Methodology. When writing the article, the basic principles of historical knowledge were used: historicism, scientificity, objectivity. Specific search tasks of the research were solved by problem-chronological means (optimal involvement of the thematic literature and source base); historical-comparative (analysis of various sources and formation of relevant research provisions and conclusions); critical analysis (critical attitude to various sources) methods. The scientific novelty consists in a comprehensive study of the genesis of the creation and activity of the Special Purpose Units in Volyn, their participation in the fight against the insurgent movement in the region based on unpublished sources. New source material, including archival documents important for solving the problem, was introduced into scientific circulation and analyzed. Conclusions. The newly created units of the Volyn Military Police were actively involved in the fight against the insurgent movement even at the stage of their formation. In the autumn of 1921, in preparation for the Second Winter Campaign, the authorities used them to defend the main cities on the routes of movement of Yuri Tyutyunnik's rebel groups. After the defeat of this campaign, the insurgent movement of the region declined somewhat. The underground anti-Bolshevik organization, the Volyn Insurgent Army, became a new threat to the Soviet government. Subdivisions of the National Security Service also took part in its liquidation. After that, insurgent activities were continued only by individual leaders and departments. Criminal elements became more active. In such conditions, the need for the existence of large units of the National Police disappeared, their functions were successfully performed by law enforcement agencies. Therefore, in the summer of 1924, their disbandment began.","PeriodicalId":232569,"journal":{"name":"Scientific Papers of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsyiubynskyi State Pedagogical University. The article is a pioneer research of the above-mentioned problem. In local media it was found the lists of commissioners and investigated the informational potential of them as well as another newspapers materials under the prism of analysis of the personal composition of commissioners Conclusions. The lists of commissioners appointed by district authorities, institutions, and village councils didn`t aimed to publish. It was found lists of appointed by District Committee of Communist party and village councils from 11 districts of Kyivan and Chernihiv regions. These commissioners were directed to the realizing of some political-economical campaign. In overwhelming majority cases the reconstruction of the persons of personal composition of commissioners needs to add the another newspapers’ materials. The lists do not contain the information regarding the name and current position of the commissioners. It narrow the research opportunities. The research methods are based on the concrete historical research approach – historicism, objectivity, comprehensiveness and integrity, systematicity, as well as on methods of analysis and synthesis, historical-statistical, historical-comparative, problem-chronological. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in a comprehensive study of the run and consequences of the armed confrontation between the Russian and Austro-Hungarian troops on the border of Volynska and Podilska provinces in mid-August 1914. Conclusion. From the first days of Austria-Hungary’s declaration of war against Russia, the territory of Right Bank Ukraine became a battleground of military actions. In August 1914, a series of armed clashes took place on the border zone of Volynska and Podilska provinces with a temporary seizure of territories. The greatest damage was caused to the population of Volyn, where a number of settlements were destroyed because of military actions. August battles on the territory of Podilia ended with insignificant material damage, a several days control over the provincial city Kamianets-Podilskyi, and moral-psychological trials. Kyiv province played behind the front lines role – no military operations took place on its territory, except airplane bombings.","PeriodicalId":232569,"journal":{"name":"Scientific Papers of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsyiubynskyi State Pedagogical University. The research methodology applies the principles of historicism and objectivity, as well as general scientific and special-historical methods of historiographical research. The scientific novelty of the article is in an attempt to comprehensively reconstruct the historiographical effect of the celebration of the centennial anniversary of M. Hrushevsky by Ukrainian intellectuals abroad. Conclusions. The summarized multifaceted material makes it possible to convincingly state that the centenary of M. Hrushevsky became a significant event in the intellectual life of Ukrainians abroad. Despite the stereotyped thinking of some diaspora figures, thanks to extensive media promotion and numerous public and scientific initiatives, the commemoration was turned into a celebration of Ukrainian culture, which is important for the consolidation of the emigrant community. As a result, numerous innovative historiographic studies based on actualized issues appeared. Their authors, in their reconstructions of M. Hrushevsky’s life and activities, took into account an increasingly wide range of cognitive perspectives and intellectual contexts. And the lively discussion of these works, the appearance of provocative interpretations (for example, O. Pritsak), the public resonance of many initiatives contributed to the stability of the \"tone\" of historiographical interest. All this made possible the emergence of L. Vynar’s disciplinary initiative to start Hrushevsky studies as a separate branch of reasearch. The dynamism of the progress of this field of Ukrainian studies in the following decades allows us to confirm the power of the historiographical impulse given by the anniversary events.","PeriodicalId":232569,"journal":{"name":"Scientific Papers of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsyiubynskyi State Pedagogical University. The research methodology relies on the use of an interdisciplinary approach. Based on the principles of objectivity and historicism, the research has d the structural-functional systematic analysis of historiographical facts and the comparative-historical method. The article has used the heuristic possibilities of periodisation, classification and typology methods. The scientific novelty of the article consists in an attempt to comprehensively reconstruct the participation of Ukrainian historians of interwar Poland in international scientific cooperation. Conclusions. Despite the generally repressive cultural policies of the Polish government, Ukrainian historians in the Second Polish Republic generally adapted well to the difficult political and financial circumstances. Giving a proper response to numerous socio-political and cultural challenges, they managed to preserve the traditions formed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Mainly traditions of international scientific cooperation and, despite constant financial problems, Ukrainian free socio-humanitarianism in foreign forums. In terms of institutions, international scientific cooperation was most actively established by the members of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and the Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Warsaw. This cultural activity gained special national importance in the 1930s of the 20th century, when Ukrainian socio-humanitarianism was subjected to devastating repression under the Soviet occupation. In general, in the conditions of stateless existence at the time, the international scientific cooperation developed by Ukrainian historians in the Second Polish Republic was a kind of cultural diplomacy, realizing the important task of establishing the political subjectivity of Ukrainians.","PeriodicalId":232569,"journal":{"name":"Scientific Papers of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsyiubynskyi State Pedagogical University. Soviet Socio-Political History of the 1920s and its Interpretive Periodization in the Works of Robert Conquest 罗伯特·康奎斯特作品中的20世纪20年代苏联社会政治史及其解释的分期化

{"title":"Soviet Socio-Political History of the 1920s and its Interpretive Periodization in the Works of Robert Conquest","authors":"Serhii Borzov","doi":"10.31652/2411-2143-2022-42-88-96","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31652/2411-2143-2022-42-88-96","url":null,"abstract":"The purpose of the article. Investigate the scientific works of the American scientist R. Conquest, his factual priorities and conceptual approaches to the coverage of Soviet socio-political history of the 1920's, his interpretation of its periodization, compared with Soviet historiography. The research methodology consists of classical methods of historical research (chronological, comparative, historiographical analysis, scientific analogy). A combined approach is used, which combines the presence of a historical context with its critical historiographical interpretation. For the first time, the object of comprehensive research is the scientific work of historian R. Conquest, author of famous works - \"The Great Terror\" and \"Harvest of Sorrow\", which to some extent determines the scientific novelty. The intellectual activity of the scientist is associated mainly with the study of the Holodomor. However, his original interpretations of socio-political events in Ukraine in 1917–1929, the formation and functioning of the Soviet system of power, the role and place of its elites, the interpretation of the NEP era, and the mass famine of 1921–1923 were overlooked. The periodization of Soviet political history used by the Conquest is considered by us in a historiographical sense. It is important to highlight his scientific interpretations of events and phenomena, to emphasize the author's concept, to find out the differences in comparison with Soviet historiography. This approach seems innovative to us. Conclusions. It is noted that the Conquest's periodization of socio-political processes in the 1920's was digital (classical dating of events) and purely interpretive (author's interpretation of phenomena and processes). His scientific assessments of military communism, the NEP, and the political struggle in the CPSU (B) for leadership and power are historically reliable and well-argued. The key chronological periods (1917–1921, 1921–1927, 1928–1929), which are called out by the scientist, are logically and historically interrelated. The periodization of the Bolshevik occupation of Ukraine, the very formulation of the problem and its coverage are original and innovative. Soviet history researcher, political scientist and historian Conquest abandoned the periodization of socio-political history of the 1920s, canonized by Soviet historiography.","PeriodicalId":232569,"journal":{"name":"Scientific Papers of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsyiubynskyi State Pedagogical University. The research methodology is based on the principles of objectivity, historicism, systematicity, analytical and synthetic criticism of sources. The method of historical reconstruction contributed to the creation of a coherent picture of the history of the Epiphany of the Lord Church in Stanymyr village from disparate facts. The scientific novelty consists in an attempt to systematize the materials related to the history of the church and introduce a new historical source of the 18th century into scientific circulation, which enriches the research base of the monument, as well as the history of the settlement in which it is located. The document proposed for publication can be used for research on church history, architecture, local history, demographic studies, as well as other topics devoted to the history of society in the early modern period. Conclusions. The Epiphany of the Lord Church in Stanymyr is one of the few preserved wooden churches of Opillia, built in the 17th century. The first Christian church in the village probably existed already in the 15th century, but the first documented mention of the church in Stanymyr dates back to the beginning of the 16th century. The modern monument was built in 1689, but it has not come down to us in its original form, which is particularly confirmed by the visitation of the church in 1763. The published document contains a detailed description of the interior of the church (including icons, liturgical utensils, vestments and books) and its surroundings (fence, bell tower, cemetery), as well as immovable property (parson's house and land). The visitation also includes valuable information about the local parish priest, statistics about the parish's population, its toponymy and anthroponymy.","PeriodicalId":232569,"journal":{"name":"Scientific Papers of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsyiubynskyi State Pedagogical University. The methodology for studying memoirs as a historical source in this study is based on general theoretical methods of classification, criticality, systematization and generalization, as well as content analysis, which formalizes the text and makes it possible to analyze a large amount of information from memories, highlighting the most frequently mentioned moments from the years of study and the specifics of the semantic content of memories of this period in life. The biographical method allows us to consider memoirs not only as \"testimony of oneself and experienced\", but also as a discursive platform about contemporary social strategies and everyday practices. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that the daily life of students of Galician gymnasiums is put at the center of the study. Moreover, everyday life is viewed through the prism of memoir literature, which provides an opportunity to trace the individual perception of the \"Habsburg era\" in secondary schools. Conclusions. Memoirs of the Ukrainian intelligentsia of Galicia of the late XIX - early XX centuries. have significant information potential. It is the memoirs, although written in adulthood, that provide an opportunity to \"look\" at the student environments of that time and their problems \"from the inside\". Memoirs significantly complement official documents (annual reports, legislative, constituent and regulatory documents, requirements), statistics and correspondence between the directorate of gymnasiums, the Regional School Council and the Ministry of Creeds and Education. Memoir literature best covers everyday life in a broad understanding of this concept, which includes not only material and living conditions and leisure, but also the formation of values and ideas about oneself, family, environment, state, comprehension of life circumstances, system of relations. Taking into account the fact that Ukrainian intelligentsia of this period studied in different gymnasiums of the region (in Lviv, Ternopil, Berezhany, Drohobych, Zolochiv, Stanislav, etc.), a comparison of their memories will make it possible to show the overall picture of schooling in Galicia and highlight the common and distinctive features of the daily experience of high school students, which could depend on the leadership of educational institutions, the city, the social origin of students, the ethnic proportions of students in the classroom, the main language of instruction.","PeriodicalId":232569,"journal":{"name":"Scientific Papers of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsyiubynskyi State Pedagogical University. The research methodology includes both special-historical and interdisciplinary methods. Among the special methods, one should point out first of all the method of historiographical analysis, thanks to which the state of scientific study of the problem is revealed. The problem-chronological method made it possible to divide the research topic into narrow problems and consider them in chronological order. Comparative aspects of transformations in the Podilsk village in the post-war period are performed in the context of the comparative-historical method. Scientific novelty is determined by the fact that the specified topic was not the subject of a special scientific study, as well as the author's attempt to solve the problem based on the materials of a specific microhistorical study. Conclusions. The death of the leader and the change of political leadership put an end to Stalin's agrarian policy, which was based on administrative non-economic coercion, ignoring the basic economic laws, and the purposeful constant draining of material resources from agriculture. The reforms of the agrarian sector of the first half of the 1950s, which were designed to reduce the command and administrative influence on the management of collective farms and increase the latter's initiatives regarding the scale of planning and growing products, generally contributed to the rise of agriculture and some improvement of the situation of the collective farm peasantry in Podilly. The increase in grain yield made it possible not only to intensify the development of the livestock industry and purchase the necessary agricultural machinery, but also to accumulate a certain share of money for the payment of salaries to collective farmers. The policy of consolidation of collective farms not only did not lead to fundamental changes in the organization and technology of production, but also had long-term destructive consequences. United farms became poorly managed, and collective farm workers became more alienated from each other. There was a narrowing of the elements of collective farm democracy and the alienation of the peasantry from the land. Certain successes of collective farm construction and some improvement in the material well-being of the villagers did not affect the improvement of the cultural and educational sphere of the Podil village. Rural schools and clubs, which were considered as centers for the introduction of communist ideology and morality into the peasant environment and were called to change the outlook and influence the spiritual life of the peasantry, were for a long time in unsuitable premises that did not meet sanitary and hygienic standards. The state proposed to build new educational and cultural institutions at the expense of collective farms or ","PeriodicalId":232569,"journal":{"name":"Scientific Papers of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsyiubynskyi State Pedagogical University.
