This case report describes maxillofacial prosthetic treatment from the aspect of nutrition by following the condition of a 69-year-old woman who received surgery for a right-side carcinoma of the maxilla. After the initial treatment, metastatic disease was found, and her nutritional status worsened steadily. Although the prognosis may be poor, maxillofacial prosthodontic treatment should be given in order to maintain nutritional status and quality of life and to achieve optimal function for the patient as palliative care. The patient had undergone 5 surgical operations because of repeated recurrence pleomorphic adenoma, which resulted in partial maxillectomy followed by total maxillectomy, and finally orbital resection. The patient was left with oral, nasal, and orbital communication. Rehabilitation with a silicone facial cover was planned because the patient’s chief complaint was mouth dryness during sleep, and air leakage through the defects was considered a cause of this dryness. Furthermore, the patient was reluctant to use a conventional prosthesis for the time being. A silicone facial cover was fabricated. The patient's speech and sleep quality were evaluated with and without the cover, and the patient’s oral dryness was found to improve with use of the cover. Use of a silicone facial cover instead of a conventional prosthesis gave a satisfactory result, and is one option for preventing mouth dryness in a patient with multiple facial defects. Whether the traumatic loss of limbs or fingers is due to war, congenital malformations, systemic diseases (diabetes), industrial, domestic or vehicular accident, or amputation, it leaves the individual with a long-lasting emotional scar from the disfigurement. We as prosthodontists have the skillset to change a patient’s life by making a prosthesis that would enhance a patients’ physical and psychological well-being. Through time, emphasis has been made on replacing a lost digit for aesthetic purposes but function is equally important, if not more. Movement of a finger using the movement of the patient’s own hand may provide the patient with adequate movement to carry out his or her daily activities. In this age of digitalization, the use of impression materials is slowly but steadily reducing. The movable finger prosthesis described in this article eliminates the need for using any impression material as well as shows the use of 3D printing to make a functional prosthesis. \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":232217,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Maxillofacial Prosthetics","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123768796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This case report describes the rehabilitation of a maxillectomy patient with dementia and cerebral infarction, using obturators made of different materials to facilitate speech and swallowing. The patient had difficulty inserting the original prosthesis by himself and would sometimes bite down on the obturator to position it in his mouth instead of using his hands. As a result, the obturator caused irritation and bleeding, especially in the sensitive maxillectomy area. Ultimately, a new obturator with a base made of heat-cured acrylic resin and a bulb made of silicone was delivered. In this article, we describe the case and discuss the use of the obturator to recover swallowing and speech function in this patient. Material and Methods: Eight patients with orbital defects (age range 10–45 years) were selected to be included in a cross-over randomized trial. The patients were divided into two equal groups: Group A patients (n=4) received an orbital prosthesis constructed by conventional technique followed by another one constructed by rapid prototyping technology. Group B patients (n=4) received the same treatment as the first group but in a reversed order. Patient satisfaction was evaluated through questionnaire while dimensional accuracy in comparison to the normal side was calculated for both techniques. Numerical data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests. For parametric data; Paired t-test was used to compare between prostheses and the normal side. For non-parametric data; Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare between the two techniques. Results: Orbital prostheses made by aid of RP technology showed statistically significant higher mean satisfaction score than the conventional technique (P ≤ 0.05), both prostheses showed insignificant less eye fissure height dimensions in comparison to normal side but conventional technique showed significant less eye fissure length. Conclusion: Rapid prototyping technology improved patient`s satisfaction regarding the orbital prosthesis and it was proved to be superior than conventional technique in dimensional accuracy.","PeriodicalId":232217,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Maxillofacial Prosthetics","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126702307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the number of articles in maxillofacial prosthetics has rapidly increased in the last ten years in various prosthodontic journals, many researchers are still not aware that there is a new journal dedicated to our field. To counter this issue, iJMP has worked from the beginning to have international renowned experts in various specialities of maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation to serve on its advisory board. The capabilities of Portable document format (PDF) have not yet been fully utilized in maxillofacial prosthetics publications especially when considering that PDF is the most common file format for publishing articles. This article briefly reviews the application of PDF in the visualization of 3D data within scientific publications. It also introduces an effective interactive visualization approach by embedding 3D data into PDF file for journal publications and discuss its impact on maxillofacial prosthetic publications. It emphasizes on the usage of this electronic document, when used to its full potential, could be used to illustrate embedded 3D interactive maxillofacial prosthetic data, which can be viewed and manipulated by the reader without the need for specific 3D viewing softwares. Thus, this article compiles the capabilities of PDF which is beyond just an electronic documentation exchange and viewing static 2D structures in scientific publications.
