Popular views on reengineering include: reengineering has supplanted TQM, reengineering alternates with TQM allowing for continuous improvement between periods of radical change, and reengineering has peaked and is on its way out. The need for the use of these new tools is illustrated with examples of the adverse effects on manufacturing and the penalty of bringing a product late to the market. The new tools are a combination of circuit simulation, which is used to evaluate circuit performance, and statistical tools, such as Monte Carlo simulation, Cp & Cpk measurement, and design centering. Solutions sought through joint ventures have led to synergistic success, or to culture-clash induced failures. One frequent failure mode is in the area of any envisaged technology transfer. A more mutually acceptable and sustainable concept of 'technology exchange' is proposed on the basis of the totality of technology, including organizational, human and information components. The paper looks at findings from reviews of current development processes and highlights the varying forms of EDM. The benefits of EDM and ways to avoid pitfalls of implementation are also discussed, in addition to a real life case study at IBM, UK. There are two problems in the product development process. Firstly, the management of creativity and secondly, the project management problem. The creative process may be facilitated by a systemic framework. A structured framework facilitates the retention of organizational learning. Efficiency in development is enhanced by systematic review of effort at defined milestones. This framework must be geared towards a vision to acquired development capability to further the purpose of the organization. A flexible layout is one that maintains low material handling costs despite fluctuations in the product demand levels. The authors extend existing procedures for design of flexible layouts by: (1) explicitly capturing the stochastic nature of product demands and the resulting material variability in flows between different processing departments; (2) allowing for the possibility of multiple processing departments of the same type in the same facility; and (3) letting material flows between pairs of individual departments be determined simultaneously with the layout and as function of the demand scenarios.
