In addition to iodized salt additional strategies to fight iodine deficiency exist. A promising possibility is the supplementation of feed with iodine, in order to increase its content in food of animal origin. In a feeding experiment 24 male castrated and female piglets of the cross breed Deutsche Landrasse x Pietrain were fed a high iodine supplemented diet. At a body weight of 100 kg the animals were slaughtered and the effect of the iodine supplementation on iodine content in the organs was studied. Animals receiving 30 mg iodine/kg feed showed significantly higher iodine contents in muscle, heart, kidney, liver, serum, fat and in the thyroidea than animals receiving no iodine supplementation. The iodine content in muscle and organs increased by a factor three to seven. Concerning meat quality and other slaughter parameters there was no difference between the two groups. This demonstrates that this strategy is in addition to iodized salt a possibility to reduce iodine deficiency.</p>","PeriodicalId":23103,"journal":{"name":"Tierarztliche Praxis","volume":"25 4","pages":"312-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20252830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Geishauser (group D) was performed. As a control, three cows were dried off without using any teat bougies (group E). Before drying off the udder quarters, the condition of the mucosa in the teat papillary lactiferous sinus was documented by means of endoscopy. After five days, lactation was started and endoscopy was performed again. Endoscopical pictures and video tapes were evaluated for existence of inflammatory-proliferating reactions on the mucosa of the papillary lactiferous sinus. Comparison of the five groups with statistical methods (Fisher test) showed significant (P < 0.001) effects: all udder quarters, dried off temporarily by using conventional teat bougies and teat canulas (groups A, B, C) showed more or less severe alterations in the mucosa of the papillary lactiferous sinus, whereas in cows, treated with the novel wax bougie (group D) as well as in cows of the control group (E) there were no alterations detectable at all.</p>","PeriodicalId":23103,"journal":{"name":"Tierarztliche Praxis","volume":"25 4","pages":"329-35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20252833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The functional result was classified as good in 38% of patients, satisfactory in 20% and poor in 42%. The satisfaction of the owners, however, was 96%. Dynamometric and kinemetric measurements showed that the pain reduction achievable with femoral head resection is at the cost of functional deficits in small dogs as well as the larger breeds. Depending where the probes were taken from, the stratum synovial was arranged in a different way. The synovial intima seems to miss under the tendon of the long/commune extensor muscle, the collateral ligaments and the sesamoidean collateral ligaments. That is why the subsynovial tissue forms the superficial layer. The surface of the probes taken sidewards to the tendon of the extensor muscle and of the synovial fold, which is situated between the metacarpus/metatarsus and the proximal phalanx as well as from the palmar/plantar recess is dominated by synovial intima. Synovial cells are mainly arranged as monolayer. Synovial cells are variable in their appearance. Some resemble blackberrys, others show a quite undulating surface. The length of processes of synovial cells differs from 2-10 microns, the diameter of the synovial cells from 5-10 microns. The space between two cells amounts to 2-10 microns. The intercellular gap is put in relation to the length of the cells' processes. The synovial intima is supposed to form a barrier between the articular cavity and the surrounding structures.</p>","PeriodicalId":23103,"journal":{"name":"Tierarztliche Praxis","volume":"25 4","pages":"363-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20253424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A European multicentre study established a high in vitro activity for this modern antimicrobial drug against a wide spectrum of bovine pathogens. Gram-positive and gram-negative mastitis agents were inactivated even at very low active ingredient concentrations, including Enterobacteriaceae which are often resistant to other drugs. The results of clinical trials using experimental E. coli mastitis as an example demonstrate the efficacy of cefquinome in vivo.
