Materials and Methods: MVR surgery was performed on 634 patients using either single or combined procedures. Of these patients, 358 (56.5%) underwent conventional MVR surgery, 121 (19.1%) underwent total chordal protection, and 155 (24.4%) underwent posterior chordal preservation. All patients were evaluated as class 3 and 4 according to the New York functional classification (NYHA). Left ventricular diastolic end-diameter (SVDSD), left ventricular systolic end-diameter (SVSSD), end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), and ejection fraction (EF) were compared between groups. Results: The degree of valve insufficiency was 3 and 4 in patients with mitral insufficiency. The mortality risk for patients undergoing conventional surgical operations was 4.257 times higher (OR:4.25; 95%CI:1.22-14.76). The study showed positive effects of chordal protection on the clinical status and echocardiographic parameters of undergoing MVR surgery (p<0.01). Conclusion: We believe cord protection methods positively affect left ventricular function after MVR. In particular, total chordal protection will positively affect left ventricular function.","PeriodicalId":23051,"journal":{"name":"THE ULUTAS MEDICAL JOURNAL","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90689175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and methods: Thirty-three DTC patients who performed FDG-PET scans after thyroidectomy were selected for this retrospective study. All patients had Tg levels over 10 ng/ml. FDG-PET was performed on patients six weeks after surgery. 2 weeks later FDG-PET imaging, patients received 131-I radioiodine treatment (RIT) except those with lymph node involvement. After RIT, post-ablation therapy whole body scan (TWBS) was performed on the patients. Results: Twelve patients (36.4%) without involvement outside the thyroid bed, both on the FDG-PET and TWBS, were remissed completely. In 21 patients (63.4%), there was involvement outside the thyroid bed on the FDG-PET and/or TWBS. Eleven patients (33.3%) had distant organ involvement in the FDG-PET and/or TWBS. Patients with involvement outside the thyroid bed had higher Tg levels than others. The disease was completely or partially regressed in the patients with distant organ involvement who had negative FDG-PET scans and positive TWBS results. The disease tended to progress in patients with distant organ involvement who had higher SUVmax levels on FDG-PET. Conclusion: Our data suggest that the FDG-PET scan, performed on the DTC patients with high Tg levels at the time of staging, would be the right approach. This approach will be useful, especially in demonstrating lymph node involvement and predicting prognosis. The results of FDG-PET may also change the treatment management.","PeriodicalId":23051,"journal":{"name":"THE ULUTAS MEDICAL JOURNAL","volume":"51-52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135402947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: The duration of the patients on the pump during surgery, transition times to feeding, blood gas and other laboratory parameters, complications developed during follow-up in the intensive care unit, and exitus rates were evaluated retrospectively. Results: BDG was performed due to tricuspid atresia, the most common diagnosis (30.2%). In the evaluation of the relationship between postoperative patient findings and exitus, a positive correlation was found between the duration of inotropic support, early extubation, and the duration of HFNC therapy in all patients (p<0.05); and a negative correlation was found in terms of the fluid the patients received on the first day after surgery (p<0.05). In patients who developed complications, a negative correlation was observed only in terms of the fluid they received on the first day after surgery (p<0.05) Conclusions: In terms of all patients, it was observed that mortality increased with early extubation and prolonged duration of inotropic support and HFNC therapy, and it decreased as the fluid the patients received on the first day after surgery decreased. In patients who developed complications, it was only observed that mortality decreased as the fluid the patients received on the first day after surgery decreased.","PeriodicalId":23051,"journal":{"name":"THE ULUTAS MEDICAL JOURNAL","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135402959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our study evaluated the surgical results of patients who underwent retrograde intramedullary nailing surgery. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients were treated with retrograde intramedullary nailing for femoral supracondylar fractures in a single clinic between January 2015 and September 2018. The clinical, functional, and radiological findings were analyzed retrospectively. Demographic data of the patients in our study, length of hospital stay, time until surgery, presence of additional trauma, complication rates, type of trauma, HSS and NEER scoring criteria for functional evaluation, and AO classification were used to determine fracture types. Results: Eighteen (60%) patients had high-energy trauma as the etiological cause, while 12 (40%) had fractures due to low-energy trauma. There were four open fractures and 26 closed fractures in the patients. The patients were evaluated according to the HSS and NEER evaluation systems. According to the HSS scoring system, 8 (26.7%) had excellent, 9 (30%) good, 12 (40%) moderate, and 1 (3%) poor results. According to the NEER scoring system, 7 (23.3%) excellent, 10 (33.3%) good, and 13 (43.4%) intermediate results were obtained. Conclusion: In supracondylar femur fractures, retrograde intramedullary nailing is a method that should be preferred in appropriate cases because of the low amount of bleeding, rapid mobilization, good union since the fracture hematoma is not evacuated, and good postoperative functional results.","PeriodicalId":23051,"journal":{"name":"THE ULUTAS MEDICAL JOURNAL","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85565336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) may predispose to both arterial and venous thromboembolic complications. This study examined the relationship between COVID-19 infection and Buerger's disease-related amputations. Materials and Methods: Between January 2018 and July 2023, 54 patients who applied to our clinic for Buerger's disease and were followed up and treated were analyzed retrospectively. Follow-up information, demographic data of patients (age, gender, body mass index (BMI), education status), when they were diagnosed, amount of smoking (pack/year), all treatments applied for Buerger's disease (Pre-Covid – Covid period – Covid Afterwards), presence or absence of limb amputation, continued smoking, medications, cardiovascular risk factors, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), Venous Thromboembolic Event (Pulmonary Embolism), Covid-19 History and vaccination information were noted. Results: The mean age of 54 patients included in the study was 38.1 (27-49), all male. The mean smoking rate was 32 (16 - 60) packs/year, and the mean exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus was 1.22 (0-4) times. There was a significant correlation between major amputations due to Buerger's disease and age, severity of COVID-19 disease, and systemic hypertension (p<0.005). Major amputation rates increased during the period of COVID-19 disease (p<0.05). Conclusion: We found a statistically significant increase in major amputations as the exposure to the virus or the severity of the COVID-19 disease increased. We also observed a significant increase in major amputation rates in the presence of systemic hypertension. The presence of COVID-19 disease and hypertension should be considered when planning treatment to prevent amputation in Buerger's patients.","PeriodicalId":23051,"journal":{"name":"THE ULUTAS MEDICAL JOURNAL","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135402961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Depending on the food source, this period of satiety can be shortened or lengthened. It has been reported that in diets for treating obesity in which long-term satiety is a goal, animal-derived proteins can help people feel fuller for longer. This study aimed to examine the effects on satiety markers after breakfast of consuming breakfast foods prepared with different protein sources. Materials and Methods: The study included 40 participants but concluded with 39 participants. Sixteen males and 23 females participated in the research. The participants in the study were randomly assigned to begin the investigation. After 12 hours of fasting, the study participants were offered two breakfasts on separate days. Two distinct breakfasts consisting of foods of animal origin and foods of vegetable origin were served. Results: The breakfasts had similar calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, and fiber. Before and after breakfast, a VAS scale with seven satiety markers was created and applied. The scale was applied 0 minutes before breakfast, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 120 minutes, and 180 minutes after breakfast. After breakfast, it was observed that the satiety markers of animal origin had a longer duration and higher scores than those of plant origin. Conclusion: In cases where energy restriction is necessary, it has been determined that increasing the protein quality in the foods consumed can provide long-term satiety regardless of the amount consumed.","PeriodicalId":23051,"journal":{"name":"THE ULUTAS MEDICAL JOURNAL","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72548955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ferritin has emerged as a biomarker of low-grade inflammation in addition to its role in iron metabolism. The study aims to determine the correlation between ferritin and insulin resistance (IR) in MetS. Materials and Methods: In this study, ferritin, glucose (fasting), and HOMA-IR were measured from serum samples obtained from 98 MetS patients and 100 healthy volunteers. Serum ferritin, glucose, insulin, and HOMA-IR results were compared between the MetS and the control group. Correlation analysis was performed between ferritin and HOMA-IR in control and MetS patients. Results: Serum ferritin (Control: 93,9±30,13; MetS:200±57,31 ng/ml), glucose (Control: 100,9±11,86, 123,9±21,52 ng/dl), insulin (Control: 4,11±2,57; MetS:15,99±5,71 µU/ml) and HOMA-IR (Control: 1,04±0,74; MetS:5,07±2,33) revealed to be higher in MetS compared to control. The correlation between serum ferritin level and HOMA-IR in MetS patients was revealed. This correlation was not found in the control group. Conclusion: In MetS, high serum ferritin level increases insulin resistance. While the positive correlation of ferritin with insulin resistance occurs at high ferritin levels, this is not observed at low ferritin levels.","PeriodicalId":23051,"journal":{"name":"THE ULUTAS MEDICAL JOURNAL","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83340290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explores the correlation between various biochemical, hormonal, hematological, and oxidative stress parameters in infertile male patients and their sperm parameters. Materials and Methods: From January to July 2023, blood samples of infertile male patients from our outpatient clinic were examined for aforementioned parameters. Patients were categorized into four groups based on their sperm parameters: Group 1 (Normal), Group 2 (Asthenospermia), Group 3 (Oligospermia), and Group 4 (Azoospermia). Results: Infertility duration, FSH, LH, prolactin, and testicular volume (both left and right) varied significantly among the groups (p<0.01). Significant differences were also noted in monocyte, eosinophil, TAS, TOS, OSI, CRP, and ESR levels (p<0.01). Specifically, azoospermia positively correlated with increased Monocyte, TOS, OSI, CRP, and ESR levels (p-values and correlation coefficients ranging from p=0.012, r: 0.141 to p<0.001, r: 0.551). Logistic regression pinpointed TAS, TOS, OSI, and ESR as significant differentiation risk factors. According to ROC analysis, these factors were critical prognosticators for azoospermia. Conclusion: Elevated TOS and OSI, coupled with decreased TAS levels, were linked to monocytes, CRP, and ESR in azoospermia. Thus, TAS, TOS, OSI, and ESR can be pivotal diagnostic tools for infertility, and their evaluation from routine blood samples could streamline the diagnosis and treatment response assessment of infertility.","PeriodicalId":23051,"journal":{"name":"THE ULUTAS MEDICAL JOURNAL","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135402960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
