A twofold document from 1914, a circular letter, asking the German Jewry for assistance for the Falasha, and the attached membership-list are considered. The article tries to explore the reasons, why such a Jewish association was established, and why at that time. It also focusses on the motivations of the German participants, their social and academic backgrounds and their networking. Fitting well into the then vivid “ Jewish renaissance ” , the image of an untouched Jewry, surviving in Ethiopia from pre-rabbinical times on, may then have fulfilled multiple purposes for the Europeans: Rescuing brethren abroad – by the idea of Jewish self-help and Jewish faith, all together combined with a belief in European superiority – , rejection of Christian missionary efforts, self-assertion and resistance against the Christian majority, and the sharpening of an unique Jewish identity.","PeriodicalId":229518,"journal":{"name":"Aethiopica: International Journal of Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129464878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The consequence was, that the palatal vowel, which we find already in the Gǝʿǝz imperfect yǝfeṣṣǝm , became the only characteristic of the B-type. It spread over all three verbal forms (perfect, imperfect, jussive) and formed a system of ablaut between ē and ī (and in analogy to that, between ō and ū in the D-type). This however, happened in different ways in the three languages: Silṭe, Harari und Zāy. A correct evaluation of this interrelation can be properly understood by focusing on a corpus of integrated sources related to local written documentation, oral records and colonial reports. The control of the northern border by Emperors Yoḥannǝs and Mǝnilǝk created various historical problems and a debate focusing on independence and the maintenance of a political autonomy of the Marab Mǝllas. Land tenure system is the key factor for understanding the dynamic of power relations in the area at the eve of colonial rule.","PeriodicalId":229518,"journal":{"name":"Aethiopica: International Journal of Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129191364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We can distinguish two types of religious associations: the maḫbar and the sanbate . These two types are organized on the same scheme and are led by the faithful themselves. Both are based on a fundamental concept, which is to gather faithful around a banquet for a commemoration. Maḫbar and sanbate are a representation of a zǝkǝr , a crucial concept in the Ethiopian Christianity. The religious authority is shared by one priest who leads the liturgy of the ritual. The presence of a priest without an organizational role highlights the influence of the laymen to organize their own religious life outwards the cast-iron ecclesiastical organisation. The social and religious influence of these organizations is very important in towns and in the countryside. To be member of these associations is a sign of an important social status in the parish community and the reality of both maḫbar and sanbate shows the existence of a way of dialogue between the Church and the faithful.","PeriodicalId":229518,"journal":{"name":"Aethiopica: International Journal of Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116322097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
