This has prompted evolving legislation in many countries, necessitating scientific evidence for policy development. Existing literature mainly focuses on characterizing individual fireworks and quantifying noise variations between festive and non-festive periods. However, no such studies have been conducted in Argentina. This study aims to characterize noise levels generated by fireworks during the 2020 Christmas and New Year celebrations in Buenos Aires. Nine measurement systems were used, obtaining acoustic descriptors reflecting noise levels during these events. Results were compared with typical ambient noise levels in the city and those during the New Year's fireworks display in Santiago de Chile, where public access to individual fireworks is restricted. Findings indicate significant noise level increases during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, supported by the L01 percentile acoustic parameter, more effective in characterizing impulsive events than Equivalent continuous sound pressure level LeqA. Comparing results with Santiago de Chile, noise values in Argentina remained similar within a 1.1 km proximity to the fireworks show, whereas beyond that distance, Chilean residents experienced lower noise levels.","PeriodicalId":228529,"journal":{"name":"Discover Environment","volume":"13 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135933467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the phase of such challenges to energy security in Ghana, efforts have been made to achieve a secure, adequate and affordable energy supply, the study assesses the energy security of SMEs, as well as the coping strategies adopted by SMEs in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana to confront the challenges of ES. The analysis covered 246 respondents selected from over 500 SMEs. The cluster method and simple random sampling approaches were used to select the respondents. Data collected through questionnaires were edited and cleaned to ensure completeness, consistency and legibility. Descriptive, exploratory, and inferential analyses were applied to the data collected from the respondents. The means and Relative Importance Index (RII) were calculated and used to assess the strength of strategies adopted by the SMEs to cope with the challenges of ES. The study concluded that the themes for assessing the ES of the SMEs were ranked in order of affordability, acceptability , efficiency, and with the lowest being availability . In general, it came out that the SMEs did show better performance in ES. The categories of SMS that better cope with the challenges of ES are the wholesale and retail business sectors. Their coping strategies relate to the various strategies available to them; reducing energy consumption, exploiting renewable energy power, reducing energy consumption, using generators, and temporarily suspending business. The strength for coping is limited by the few options thus making the SMEs more vulnerable to achieving ES.","PeriodicalId":228529,"journal":{"name":"Discover Environment","volume":"227 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136104129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data from the Mehrabad station in Tehran were meticulously analyzed to scrutinize the spatiotemporal dynamics over a three-year period. Leveraging the Universal Radio Sound Observation (RAOB) program, we probed atmospheric attributes up to 750 m on specific critical dates: January 22, 2014; January 25, 2015; and November 27, 2016, which represent peak pollution events. Employing mathematical models, we scrutinized air temperature inversion profiles and applied the Heffter method to gauge the impact of atmospheric inversions on Tehran's air quality. Our investigation unequivocally identified January 25, 2015, as the most polluted date, unveiling precise atmospheric conditions during a radiation inversion, encompassing altitudes, temperatures, humidity, wind speed, and inversion depth. This research significantly advances our comprehension of the intricate interplay between atmospheric inversions and air pollution. It provides critical insights that can inform the development of targeted strategies to mitigate air quality issues not only in Tehran but also in analogous urban settings worldwide.","PeriodicalId":228529,"journal":{"name":"Discover Environment","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135992884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Locating suitable landfill sites is a key difficulty. This study utilizes the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) with a Geographic Information System (GIS) to identify potential landfill locations in Fez province, Morocco. Nine criteria were evaluated for the study area's suitability, including distance from surface water, distance from buildings, distance from roads, distance from protected areas, distance from forests, distance from farmland, elevation, slope, and slope direction. AHP determined criteria weights, and the Consistency Ratio (CR) ensured judgment reliability. Results highlight proximity to residential areas as the most critical factor, followed by distance from surface water and roads. The suitability map indicates the south and southeast of the province as more suitable for landfill placement than the urban areas, parks, and gardens in the north and northwest. These findings aid decision-makers in improving solid waste management practices in Fez province, Morocco.","PeriodicalId":228529,"journal":{"name":"Discover Environment","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135094900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study uses the location theory to examine the spatial distribution of SWDS in urban Ghana. Methodologically, it uses the nearness neighbour tool, which is a key component in GIS for spatial analysis. The results show that the distribution of SWDS was clustered, randomized, and skewed. The distribution was influenced by accessibility and the ability to pay for waste management services. For these reasons, high-density populated communities were serviced through the central container collection system, while high-class residential areas benefited through the door-to-door collection system. Access to regular waste collection was challenging for the majority in low-class residential neighbourhoods and peri-urban communities. It is argued that unequal access to waste management services raises important policy issues. The unserved communities are more likely to be exposed to the potential negative impact of poor solid waste management. It is further argued that if vulnerability and location are linked to deprivation, it is necessary to understand how and why this has happened.","PeriodicalId":228529,"journal":{"name":"Discover Environment","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135386845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
