In their cultural fundraisers, antifascist plays were performed, artists danced and sang, speeches were delivered, dinners were served, dance orchestras played, lotteries were held, and funds subsequently collected. España Libre reviewed the extraordinary activism for political prisoners in each of its issues. Protest was extended to other media, too. Members published letters of protest in American mainstream papers and rented radio space in several radio stations. The Confederadas’ numerous forms of protest and occupation of the public space garnered international attention for the incarcerations and executions of dissenters in Spain.","PeriodicalId":228465,"journal":{"name":"Fighting Fascist Spain","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132909095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After their victory, the Francoist forces began systematically rounding up those who had sided with the Second Spanish Republic. Although borders were sealed, Spaniards continued to clandestinely flee from the brutal political repression and execution sentences. Pro-Republic Spaniards in the United States became people “without a country” with no right to U.S. citizenship and unable to seek the services of Spanish embassies and consulates in the United States. The Confederadas would financially and legally support these refugees by relocating them to visa-granting countries.","PeriodicalId":228465,"journal":{"name":"Fighting Fascist Spain","volume":"2017 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129393837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

España Libre’s editors and contributors had a clear understanding of their role in preserving the diverse legacy of progressive and radical workers, something that was documented in each issue in the form of essays, reviews of books and fundraising events, historical writing, theater, fiction, and poetry. Staff and contributors, nongovernmental institutions, and the global antifascist community published political protest in España\u0000 Libre, which demonstrates the transnational reach and distribution of the periodical.","PeriodicalId":228465,"journal":{"name":"Fighting Fascist Spain","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128140889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alfonso Camín encouraged combative antifascism by appealing to the literary symbol of Don Quixote. With a maternalist approach, Miguel Giménez Igualada assigned women the role of caregivers to antifascist homes in exile. Away from these archetypical and traditional literary representations, Felix Martí Ibáñez inspired readers with his vision of a society finally free of fascism through individual introspection and interpersonal engagement. Moving toward a postmodern approach, writers argued that revolution was exercised by inclusion of subjectivities rather than through violent contest of political power. Other authors documented and poeticized the immigrant life in the United States and provided España Libre’s readers with a developing Spanish American exile identity in the United States.","PeriodicalId":228465,"journal":{"name":"Fighting Fascist Spain","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124227068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some authors ridiculed fascists in gendered terms while others sought compassion for refugees. Comic art grew awareness of the threat of fascism and exposed the state of terror perpetrated by Hitler and Franco. When Sergio Aragonés translated the Spanish underground resistance reports into visual language on the front page of España Libre, he perceptively counteracted the Franco regime’s propaganda. Similarly, Josep Bartolí i Guiu’s illustrations humanized political prisoners for readers. As visual discursive spaces, cartoons endorsed emotions brought forth by belonging to a transnational, antifascist, and proletarian community and asked readers to think collectively about the need for solidarity and protection of the working-class culture both in exile and under fascism. Cartoons delivered España Libre’s message powerfully until the last issue of the periodical, even after many founders had passed away.","PeriodicalId":228465,"journal":{"name":"Fighting Fascist Spain","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122492797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They transformed the antifascist experience into a full narrative voice in the periodical. One of the main writers for España Libre, Aurelio Pego, articulated in his works sharp, humorous attacks on fascism that also helped turn exile into a livable experience. His insightful humor greatly appealed to exiles and it cultivated their will to resist while proclaiming the urgency of change after the international recognition of the Franco’s regime. Pego’s wit was incisive in countering fascist myth-making. With spirited chronicles, Pego also lampooned passive Americans and exiles because he thought they could do more to end fascism in Spain.","PeriodicalId":228465,"journal":{"name":"Fighting Fascist Spain","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131173620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These included networks associated with the Second Spanish Republican government and politicians in exile; labor unions both within and outside the United States; educators, including Spanish academics and the Modern Schools; as well as Spanish-language and radical publishers operating in Europe and South America. Through the alternative press and fundraising events, exiles met other migrant, ethnic, and radical individuals and maintained a sense of trust and community so necessary to avoid the isolation of exile. On the contrary, ethnic and radical networks strengthened the Confederadas in its commitment to generating its own non-institutionalized and transnational modes of collective organization.","PeriodicalId":228465,"journal":{"name":"Fighting Fascist Spain","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132752911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the 1940s editorials focused on alerting readers about the spread of fascism to the Americas and encouraged fundraising for refugees. By the 1950s, the increasing international diplomatic recognition of the Franco dictatorship disquieted members and the editorials published during that decade were heavily focused on denouncing that recognition. However, by the 1960s the periodical concentrated its efforts on supporting the weakened underground labor opposition in Spain and in coordinating efforts with other political forces. In the 1970s, España Libre published homages to exiles for the antifascist resistance they put forth.","PeriodicalId":228465,"journal":{"name":"Fighting Fascist Spain","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128610075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
