Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN), which combine both unique properties of nanomaterials and mesostructured substances, have aroused special attention in biomedical research field due to its great advantages in many aspects such as well biocompatible, unique properties of tunable pore size and structure, large surface areas and pore volumes, controllable morphology and modifiable surfaces, high chemical and thermal stabilities. In this study, the microwave was utilized to synthesize MSN under 100 W, 300 W and 450 W heating powers. All MSNs was tested for adsorption and release of an anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer drug, ibuprofen. The characterization revealed that the MSN prepared under 450 W (MSN450) produced the most ordered and prominent mesoporous structure compared to lower power applied. MSN450 exhibited the highest ibuprofen adsorption, followed by MSN300 and MSN100, confirming that more ordered MSN demonstrated higher adsorptivity toward ibuprofen. For the release study, MSN450 showed the slowest release rate of ibuprofen, followed by MSN300 and MSN100. All MSNs was found to exhibit good activity for the ibuprofen adsorption and release.","PeriodicalId":22844,"journal":{"name":"The Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":"189 1","pages":"1382-1389"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76658310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MR219-4 and MR219-9, developed under rice radiation mutagenesis programme for adaptability to aerobic conditions, grown under conditions of varying water potentials and nitrogen levels in a shade house. Direct 15 N isotopic tracer method was used in this study, whereby the 15 N labeled urea fertilizer was utilized as a tracer for nitrogen nutrient uptake by the test crops. 15 N isotope presence in the samples was determined by using emission spectrometer analysis and percentage of total nitrogen was determined by using Kjeldahl method. 15 N atom access values of the samples were to determine the efficiency of N use by the mutant varieties. In this work, the data of yield components, viz. grain yield, plant biomass, plant height and 1000 grain weight, and nitrogen components viz, total N, % nitrogen derived from labeled fertilizer (% Ndff), % nitrogen derived from soil (% Ndfs), nitrogen uptake, fertilizer nitrogen use and nitrogen use efficiency were obtained. Results from this study showed a significant difference to the nitrogen component and yield when there is a change in the rate of fertilizer and water potential. However, varietal factor does not show any significant differences.","PeriodicalId":22844,"journal":{"name":"The Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":"16 1","pages":"500-509"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90601598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four percent (v/v) of palm stearin (PS) and palm kernel olein (PKOo) in ratios of 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25 and 100:0 were added to a chitosan solution base and applied on guava by dipping technique. Surface appearance, weight loss, firmness, carbon dioxide, oxygen and ethylene concentrations were evaluated every 3 days during 31 days of storage at chilled temperature (5±2 °C). An application of FFD on guava significantly (p <0.05) delayed chilling injury, reduced weight loss, maintained firmness, slowed down respiration and ethylene production as compared to uncoated guavas. PS:PKOo (75:25) coating was able to form compatible blends and showed good moisture and gas barrier properties when applied on guava surface, resulting in increased postharvest life of guava.","PeriodicalId":22844,"journal":{"name":"The Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":"31 1","pages":"618-625"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88182134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The adsorption process was conducted in a batch mode at 25 °C. Anionic dye removal was more efficient using the CLDH rather than LDH. The adsorption process by CLDH involved reconstruction and hydration of the calcined LDH and intercalation of AB29, RO16 and RR120. Physical characterization using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) were used to ascertain the 'memory effect' phenomenon that is structural reconstruction to regain its original LDH after rehydration. To gain insight into the mechanism of adsorption by CLDH, the pseudo-first order (PFO) and pseudo-second order (PSO) and intraparticle diffusion (IPD) kinetic models were used to analyse experimental data. Based on the correlation coefficient (R), the PSO has better fitting (R = 0.987 – 1.00) compared to PFO (R = 0.867 –0.990). Furthermore the values of maximum adsorption capacity, (qe) calculated from PSO model are consistent with the experimental qe indicating that the experimental kinetic data for AB29, RO16 and RR120 adsorption by CLDH are suitable for this model. Recycling of the adsorbent, in cycles of calcination-reconstruction process promised a possibility of regeneration of CLDH.","PeriodicalId":22844,"journal":{"name":"The Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":"30 13 1","pages":"777-792"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82995683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of support materials (bentonite, TiO2, Al2O3 and SiO2) on catalytic activity of Ru catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol were investigated under mild reaction condition of 150C and 20 bar initial hydrogen pressure for 7 hours reaction time and glycerol concentration was 20%(wt). It was found that the type of support material have significant effects on the activity and selectivity of glycerol hydrogenolysis. The order of Ru catalyst activity was Ru/bentonite > Ru/Al2O3 Ru/TiO2 > Ru/SiO2. This study showed that bentonite supported Ru catalyst was the most active with glycerol conversion reaching 62.5% compared to other supports. All the tested catalyst exhibited high selectivity to 1,2-propanediol with more than 80%.
