A square patch antenna is printed on a thin dielectric substrate (Rogers R04003 with /spl epsi//sub r/=3.38 and substrate thickness 1.5 mm). It is demonstrated that antenna bandwidth can be improved substantially by utilizing a modified photonic band-gap type structure representing capacitive and inductive elements. Data demonstrating a bandwidth enhancement of 1.6 times the antenna original bandwidth is shown. Radiation pattern data are also presented.","PeriodicalId":228265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE SoutheastCon 2002 (Cat. The \"e\" age is partly responsible. Fiber optic networks and grid grounding systems are used in many new facilities. The cost of electrical energy and the dependability of the source of electrical energy are also increasing the complexity of building electrical systems. Smart buildings are the trend in construction. This change has been emphasized by the increased cost of the electrical system and other building systems. Ideally, building management is designed into the building construction, not added after construction is completed. It starts with the building envelope design and includes electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems. For this to happen the user must be able to communicate his/her needs to the developer/architect. The result will be specifications and plans adequate for bidding and construction. The general contractor must be able to interpret these plans and communicate effectively with the subcontractors. Good communications between the project managing engineer for the electrical contractor, client, design team, and the project managing engineer for the general contractor is critical for construction of a facility per plans and specifications on time and within budget. It is a fact of construction today that these two project managers will make many of the decisions of how to install the required materials. Many times the efficiency of these decisions will be a direct result of the construction project-managing engineer's ability to understand the electrical plans, the needs of the end user, and the ability of the electrical subcontractor. In an effort to allow this to happen many construction programs are including electrical/electronic education as part of their bachelor degree programs. In some programs this material is combined with mechanical education as a basis for a (MEP) mechanical, electrical, and plumbing emphasis. Project managing engineers traditionally have been responsible for scheduling and budgeting. This education is not part of most electrical engineering degrees. Therefore it must be obtained elsewhere. It is available from some construction program certificate curriculums. A newer trend is to make the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing education available through certificate programs to those with a wide range of bachelor degrees. Many courses are offered by distance education. The need for education beyond a bachelor's degree and in a variety of areas is a part of working in the construction field. There is no one engineering bachelors degree that can offer the variety of courses necessary to prepare an individual to manage large building electrical system design, construction, and cross-link with other building systems. The author examines why this education is needed, how it should be offered, and when it should be offered.","PeriodicalId":228265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE SoutheastCon 2002 (Cat. Also the migration from the MPEG2 standard to the MPEG4 (MPEG: Motion Picture Expert Group) plays an important role in the bandwidth utilization and security. These issues are taken into consideration during the investigations, in addition to the TCP/IP issues for multimedia transfers. In-building wireless links provide a cost effective means of linking systems, especially if the client systems have to be relocated often. The authors have addressed this issue and conducted investigations in terms of the reliability and throughput between systems with wireless links for multimedia file transfers. In this article, the authors present the multimedia architecture they have developed and the associated results of the information transfers in terms of the reliability and the throughput.","PeriodicalId":228265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE SoutheastCon 2002 (Cat. It is able to identify and pinpoint from which directions the sounds come. This project takes advantage of that ability to create a simple auditory map of a virtual environment with the use of head related transfer functions (HRTF). HRTF are the basis of the most prominent techniques for digital sound spatialization. In this project a synthetic virtual environment is defined by a maze of vertical and horizontal walls drawn on the computer screen using Matlab's graphic user interface (GUI) components. In this virtual environment the subject is represented by the computer cursor. The distances from the cursor to the nearest virtual walls are calculated continuously and used to control the intensity of four virtual sounds that are simulated as if originating at the front, back, left and right of the subject. These four spatialized sounds are delivered through headphones to a blindfolded user as he/she navigates the virtual environment stepping the cursor with the four arrow keys on the keypad of the computer. Virtual navigation tests with 14 subjects confirm that the remote navigation cues provided by the spatialized sounds are more helpful in avoiding collisions with the virtual walls than a simple warning tone provided to the blindfolded user in the immediate vicinity of the walls.","PeriodicalId":228265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE SoutheastCon 2002 (Cat. The methods compared are (1) a feasibility method (FM), and (2) sequential quadratic programming with an L1 merit function (L1-SQP). The problem statement assumptions include nonstationarity of constraint error norms except at zero constraint error, without which we are not aware of any algorithm that is provably guaranteed to converge to a tolerance-feasible stationary point of a penalty function or a Kuhn-Tucker point. Global convergence of FM is proved analytically. L1-SQP is shown to exhibit potential failure even from a feasible starting point, due to an onset of infeasible sub problems. We are not aware of an implementable SQP algorithm that has this provable global convergence property of FM.","PeriodicalId":228265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE SoutheastCon 2002 (Cat. We present results and a technique that achieves record reduction in contention mini-slot (CMS) collisions by means of dividing the stations in the network efficiently. A primary goal of the design is to keep the entire protocol at the head-end (HE). The goal also includes leaving everything else in the current hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) systems unchanged. Our technique shows that with small changes in the medium access control (MAC) protocol at the HE, we can efficiently and dynamically divide the stations in the upstream based on load conditions to allot a specific amount of CMS for each region. The mechanism also proposes for the collection of channel statistics and channel monitoring to statistically configure the necessary division for optimum performance. We have also developed a simulation and visualization tool using MATLAB and a suitable and effective traffic generator model that could be extracted from network parameters. The results prove that the proposed approach amounts for a record 40%-45% reduction in mini-slot (ms) collisions.","PeriodicalId":228265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE SoutheastCon 2002 (Cat. This project is a collaboration between researchers from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University-Florida State University (FAMU-FSU) College of Engineering, researchers from High Energy Physics (HEP), Florida State University and High Energy Physics, Boston University (BU). The STC project is based on the specifications provided by the researchers at BU and a preliminary STC module designed using the Very High Speed Integrated Circuit (VHSIC) hardware description language (VHDL). The upgraded STC has a modified memory map and a new Level 3 (L3) buffer module. Traditionally discrete components of memory and processor cores were externally connected, while current implementation aims at configuring them into a single device, thus increasing general system performance by decreasing board area and time delays associated with transmission lines on the printed circuit board. The STC targets the Advanced Programmable Embedded MatriX (APEX) family of PLDs developed by Altera Corporation.","PeriodicalId":228265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE SoutheastCon 2002 (Cat. This is true of beating heart surgery where, unlike traditional methods, the heart is not arrested during the operation. At the Dept. of Surgery, University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) a system has been devised to simulate a beating human heart using intra-ventricular balloons, which are inserted inside a preserved in vitro porcine heart and made to pulsate using a pneumatic pump. The work is currently being developed in collaboration with the School of Engineering at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) and the Dept. of Mathematics & Computer Science at the University of the West Indies (UWI), with the aim of producing a computer controlled device capable of simulating the range of intra-operative cardiac behaviours typically found in heart surgery. An electromechanical pumping system is described, based on a computer controllable linear actuator. A comparison of associated pulsatile pump choices is presented along with results of the design of a prototype diaphragm pump, which was tested with the porcine heart, demonstrating normal and abnormal beating, and ventricular fibrillation. A software architecture is also presented, showing how the heart may be controlled in a variety of beating modes over the course of a surgical training session.","PeriodicalId":228265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE SoutheastCon 2002 (Cat.
