Abstract

A new technique to widen the bandwidth of a microstrip patch antenna is proposed. A square patch antenna is printed on a thin dielectric substrate (Rogers R04003 with /spl epsi//sub r/=3.38 and substrate thickness 1.5 mm). It is demonstrated that antenna bandwidth can be improved substantially by utilizing a modified photonic band-gap type structure representing capacitive and inductive elements.
