An Online survey was conducted among pediatric dentists. The questionnaire was subdivided into ‘general characteristics’, ‘number of dental treatments and working days per year’, ‘proportion of covered services’, ‘perceptions of supply and demand of pediatric dentists’. Through the Korean Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Services, the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS), and the Korean Statistical Information Service, the current state of pediatric dentists, the number of claims for covered services, and the decrease in births per year were investigated. Dental clinics claiming to be pediatric dentistry reached half of all medical institutions, but only 3.78% of pediatric dentists actually worked. 61.36% of all pediatric dentists were concentrated in the metropolitan area, showing a national imbalance. Although the population of children and adolescents have continuously decreased over the past 20 years, the number of NHIS-covered services has shown a continuous increase. Over the past 10 years, the optimal supply of pediatric dentists has been maintained at around 4,000. According to the analysis, 92.15% of pediatric dentists thought that it was necessary to prepare policies and support measures at the government level. This study is expected to be used as basic data for establishing a demand estimation method for pediatric dentistry specialists in the future.","PeriodicalId":22818,"journal":{"name":"THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN ACADEMY OF PEDTATRIC DENTISTRY","volume":"54 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80409292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hand-wrist radiographs and blood samples from 205 patients aged 7 - 17 years were retrospectively analyzed by two dentists using the SMI stages, MP3 stages, and serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels. Serum IGF-1 levels were highest at the SMI 6 - 8 and MP3 - G stage and lowest at the SMI 1 - 3 and MP3 - F stage (p < 0.0001). Serum IGFBP-3 levels were highest at the SMI 9 - 10 and MP3 - I stage and lowest at the SMI 1 - 3 and MP3 - FG stage (p = 0.010, 0.030). As a result of Pearson correlation analysis, a relatively high correlation was found between skeletal maturity using the SMI and MP3 stages and serum IGF-1 levels (r = 0.698, 0.622, p < 0.0001). According to the results of this study, serum IGF-1 levels can be used as an auxiliary measure to evaluate the skeletal maturity of children and adolescents in dentistry. The range from the mean serum IGF-1 level of 472 µg/L in SMI 6 stage to the mean IGF-1 level of 510.63 µg/L in MP3 G stage could be considered as the peak height velocity in clinical practice.","PeriodicalId":22818,"journal":{"name":"THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN ACADEMY OF PEDTATRIC DENTISTRY","volume":"1991 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82350873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 2016 periapical radiographs in primary dentition were selected from the M6 database as a learning material group, of which 1143 were labeled as proximal caries by an experienced dentist using an annotation tool. After converting the annotations into a training dataset, YOLO was trained on the dataset using a single convolutional neural network (CNN) model. Accuracy, recall, specificity, precision, negative predictive value (NPV), F1-score, Precision-Recall curve, and AP (area under curve) were calculated for evaluation of the object detection model’s performance in the 187 test datasets. The results showed that the CNN-based object detection model performed well in detecting proximal caries, with a diagnostic accuracy of 0.95, a recall of 0.94, a specificity of 0.97, a precision of 0.82, a NPV of 0.96, and an F1-score of 0.81. The AP was 0.83. This model could be a valuable tool for dentists in detecting carious lesions in periapical radiographs.","PeriodicalId":22818,"journal":{"name":"THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN ACADEMY OF PEDTATRIC DENTISTRY","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83172167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

March 2020, when COVID-19 was officially declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, was set as the starting point for COVID-19. From March 2018 to February 2020, subjects in the pre-COVID-19 period were classified as the Pre-COVID-19 group, and from March 2020 to March 2022, subjects in the post-COVID-19 period were classified as the COVID-19 group. Information related to trauma was collected through electronic medical records. The number of trauma patients before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 decreased significantly. During the COVID-19 period, there was no significant difference in the male-female ratio or the distribution order of age groups. In the COVID-19 group of permanent teeth, the ratio of trauma caused by personal mobility was higher than trauma caused by sports. In the COVID-19 group of permanent teeth, the ratio of crown fracture with pulp involvement was significantly higher than the ratio of crown fracture without pulp involvement. Changes in trauma patterns caused by COVID-19 were observed more clearly in school-aged children than in preschool children. In a pandemic situation such as COVID-19, it is expected to be used as a good educational basis for knowing that frequent diagnoses can change due to changes in the environment.","PeriodicalId":22818,"journal":{"name":"THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN ACADEMY OF PEDTATRIC DENTISTRY","volume":"203 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80251830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specimens were made from 120 human first premolars and categorized into the following groups based on the presence and the type of DBA: Group I, no bonding; Group II, One-Step; Group III, Clearfil SE Bond; and Group IV, Single Bond Universal. Subsequently, the groups were categorized into Subgroup a and Subgroup b, in which Endocem MTA® Premixed Regular and Biodentine were used, respectively. The CIE L*a*b* on the photos taken prior to TAP placement (S0), 1 week after TAP placement (S1), 2 weeks after TAP placement (S2), 4 weeks after TAP placement (S3) and 2 weeks after CSC placement (S4) was used to assess discoloration. The samples were submerged in a 2% methylene blue solution and magnified by 30 times under a stereomicroscope to assess microleakage. The application of DBA during REP reduced crown discoloration, while Biodentine showed minimal discoloration with or without DBA and regardless of the DBA type. Additionally, the application of DBA did not increase microleakage.","PeriodicalId":22818,"journal":{"name":"THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN ACADEMY OF PEDTATRIC DENTISTRY","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85790052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is limited literature available comparing the survival rates of zirconia crowns with those of other restorative materials. The objective of this study was to compare the 36-month survival rates of zirconia crowns and stainless steel crowns for proximal caries, as well as to analyze failure types associated with each crown type. Electronic medical records and radiographs of 1,061 primary molars from 498 patients treated with 2 types of prefabricated crowns at Chosun University Dental Hospital and 2 private dental clinics between 2017 and 2019 were collected and analyzed. The survival rate of zirconia crowns was found to be lower compared to that of stainless steel crowns. Regarding the groups without pulp treatment, the survival rate of stainless steel crowns was significantly higher than that of zirconia crowns. However, in the groups that received pulp therapy, no significant difference in the survival rates was observed between the two preformed crowns. Notably, abnormal root resorption or periapical lesions were identified as the primary cause of restorative failure in stainless steel crowns, whereas loss of restoration was the predominant cause in zirconia crowns. This study holds valuable implications for clinicians when selecting preformed crowns for primary molars.","PeriodicalId":22818,"journal":{"name":"THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN ACADEMY OF PEDTATRIC DENTISTRY","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85969414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to investigate the patterns of dental antibiotic prescription in children and adolescents. The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service provided data on patients who visited medical institutions. It was categorized according to year, sex, age, insurance type, dental institution, and region. Chi-square tests, Fisher’s exact tests, and one-way analyses of variance were performed. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS software (ver. 9.2; SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA). Amoxicillin and cephalosporins, the most commonly used antibiotics, accounted for approximately 96% of the prescriptions. The younger the child, the more antibiotics were prescribed for trauma, pulpitis, and dental abscesses. However, closer to adolescence, the antibiotics were primarily prescribed to manage impacted teeth and periodontal problems. Antibiotics were prescribed for 3.13 days on average. There were significant differences in the prescription rates according to age, sex, type of insurance, type of medical institution, and region (p < 0.05). This study suggested that antibiotic prescriptions should be closely monitored to ensure appropriate usage of antibiotics.","PeriodicalId":22818,"journal":{"name":"THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN ACADEMY OF PEDTATRIC DENTISTRY","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91296271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pure tone audiometry and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) tests were conducted at the initial visit and 1 year later to evaluate the hearing ability of the participants. As a result of the study, the pure tone average of the group wearing earplugs decreased significantly compared to the group not wearing earplugs, indicating an improvement in hearing. However, the signal-to-noise ratio of the DPOAE tests did not show a significant difference. These findings suggest that noise-filtering earplugs may have some effectiveness in preventing hearing loss. Birth information, a history of complications, the duration of parenteral nutrition, and endotracheal intubation were investigated by retrospectively reviewing the admission and discharge records of premature babies in the neonatal intensive care unit. The Preterm Developmental Defects of Enamel (PDDE) index was designed by modifying the existing developmental defects of enamel index. Based on PDDE index, the evaluator scored developmental defects of enamel by classifying them as enamel hypomineralization and hypoplasia. The PDDE scores in the extremely preterm and extremely low birth weight groups were significantly higher than those in other groups. Furthermore, PDDE scores of premature babies with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, rickets, intraventricular hemorrhage, or necrotizing colitis were significantly higher than those in the control group. In addition, more than 50 days of endotracheal intubation and more than 20 days of parenteral nutrition were associated with significantly higher PDDE scores than those in the control group and were risk factors for developmental defects of enamel. This study provides basic information for identifying risk factors for developmental defects of enamel in premature babies.","PeriodicalId":22818,"journal":{"name":"THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN ACADEMY OF PEDTATRIC DENTISTRY","volume":"53 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81160981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
