The purpose of this study was to determine anxiety in RAS patients. All new patients seen during May 1988-November 1988 at the Oral Diagnosis Clinic, Department of Oral Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University, completed a questionnaire regarding their history of RAS. For the measurement of anxiety, patients were given the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Of the 3,106 patients studied, 46.7% reported a positive history of RAS. In this population, females were significantly (P less than 0.001) more anxious than males. The mean SAS score obtained from patients with RAS was significantly (P less than 0.001) higher than that of patients without RAS in each sex. {"title":"[Cephalography in Thalassemic patients].","authors":"S Wisetsin","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>This article reported a study of cephalography in 60 Thalassemic patients between the age of 11-16 years old. There were 8 beta-thalassemia, 35 beta-thalassemia/Hb E and 17 Hb H diseases. Sixty age-matched controlled patients were used for comparison. It was found that 11 thalassemic patients (18.2%) had showed absence of frontal sinus, only 3 cases had showed absence of maxillary sinus, 38 cases (63.3%) had thickening of frontal bone and parietal bone, mostly in the anterior region. Twenty-two cases (36.6%) had fine granular pattern of bone, five cases (8.3%) had hair on end appearance and 44 cases (73.3%) had thin cortex at posterior and inferior margins of ramus. There were not found in control subjects. {"title":"[A comparison of the child's behavior between two groups of oral sedative drugs].","authors":"C Songvasin,&nbsp;A Pasavorakul","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The purpose of this study was to compare the child's behavior between the two groups of oral sedative drugs: a) Chloral hydrate and Promethazine and b) Hydroxyzine and Diazepam. Fourteen healthy children, aged 3 to 5 years old, participated in this study. All children exhibited negative behavior and required at least two restorative appointments with the use of oral sedative drugs and nitrous oxide-oxygen inhalation sedation. The drugs were randomly administered in a double-blind manner. The degree of sleep, crying, movement and overall behavior were evaluated during the operative procedures. With respect to sleeping, there was no significant difference in the child's behavior between the two drug groups. With respect to crying, the children who had Hydroxyzine and Diazepam cried significantly less than when they had Chloral hydrate and Promethazine at the time of injection and rubber dam placement (P less than 0.05). With respect to movement, the children who had Hydroxyzine and Diazepam moved significantly less than when they had Chloral hydrate and Promethazine at the time of injection, rubber dam placement, and the 60 minute interval (P less than 0.05). A periodontal pocket of 6 mm. was found adjacent to the radicular palatal groove. The treatment for this case included the prophylactic grinding of the talon cusp, restoration of dens invaginatus, and filling the supragingival portion of the radicular palatal groove with light-cured composite resin to erradicate plaque retention. Only degranulation and root planing was performed in order to establish the healthy dentogingival unit without any treatment of the subgingival portion of the radicular palatal groove. In part one, the etiology of caries & periodontal disease in children will be reviewed. The use of systemic and topical fluoride, pit and fissure sealant are the first two methods of preventive dentistry discussed. Corticotomy-facilitated orthodontics is a method of treatment that has the potential to greatly decrease the time involved and increase the quality of orthodontic services to the adult patient. The corticotomy procedure is a surgical technique in which a fissure is made through the cortical plate of bone that surrounds a tooth. The tooth is in a block of bone that is connected to other teeth and structures only through the medullary bone. This study was to determine Thai standards according to Korkhaus method from 93 samples (50 males, 43 females) which were selected by purposive random sampling. Their criteria were normal development of occlusion, acceptable facial profile with no any teeth removal and all incisors erupted.
