It provides food which is the foremost important need of any living organism on earth. Food and related activities to acquire food vary from region to region and community to community. Hence, tribals form the hunters, gatherers, primitive agriculturists and so many other categories on the basis of their economy. Forests have remained the usual abode of the tribals in most parts of the world, particularly in India. Hilly tracts with the forest covers have become permanent shelter grounds for them due to obvious and non-apparent politico-economic reasons. Forest provides a suitable hunting ground and definitely a gatherers’ paradise for most of the hunting and food-gathering tribes of India. It is the call of the time to have sensible exploitation of the forest resources along with substantial forestation in the same area for keeping the balance of means and consumption in the forest. About a couple of decades ago the population was less and the forests were plenteous in quantity and variety both. Now, the situation is almost reverse. Forest reserves have gone down, while the population has increasingly gone up. The tribals are still the greatest friends of the forests and coexistence of both is essential. The Bhilala and the Patelia of some areas of Western Madhya Pradesh are deemed to be the good cultivators in the region due to their hard work, adoption of new agricultural techniques and use of fertilisers.","PeriodicalId":227852,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Man - An International Journal","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115714072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of the study was to assess the health status of agriculturists using traditional and advanced methods and equipment in their day-today activity. The prevalence of zoonotic diseases, toxic hazards and physical hazards were assessed in the present study. The body mass index of agriculturists was also studied using anthropometric measurements. The present study was conducted among three villages of Jawali taluka, namely, Dund Mura, Dund and Malchundi. The total sample size was 120 agriculturists belonging to all three villages. The data collection included anthropometry, interviewers administer questionnaire and interviews. The study states that agriculturists belonging to these villages carry out most of the agricultural activities manually. Hence, prevalence of physical pain was more among the agriculturists of all three villages. Agriculturists do suffer from biological and chemical hazards. The prevalence of the diseases varies as per villages in small extent as these three villages are settled in different geographical sites.","PeriodicalId":227852,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Man - An International Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127317812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since, vitamin D is known to affect both insulin secretion and action either directly by gene modulation via vitamin D receptors or indirectly by altering calcium metabolism and transcellular calcium flux, we wanted to establish whether patients with type 2 DM have lower levels of vitamin D when compared to that of controls. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a cross sectional case control observational study, conducted from April 2011 to March 2012. Patients attending the diabetes clinic at Victoria Hospital, Bangalore were recruited as cases. Age and sex matched non diabetic patient's attendants and hospital staff were recruited as controls, after obtaining an informed consent in writing. After physical examination and anthropometric measurements, fasting serum samples were collected for estimation of 25(OH) D levels and other biochemical parameters. RESULTS: 242 subjects were included in the study, of which 139 were cases and 103 controls. Serum 25(OH) Dlevels ≤ 30ng/ml was found in 122 cases and 89 controls which was not statistically significant (p=0.658). CONCLUSION: In our study 87% of subjects (i.e. 211 of 242) were having less than optimal levels of vitamin D levels. This high level of prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is in conformation with results of other similar studies reported from India. Though statistically not significant, males andnon- vegetarians had slightly higher levels of vitamin D. we could not establish an inverse association between serum vitamin D levels and prevalent type 2 DM, probably because of cross sectional study design, small sample size, high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and other unknown","PeriodicalId":227852,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Man - An International Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124826623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

India and other developing countries have among those most seriously impacted by the consequences of climate change. A study has been conducted in Bastar forest division of Chhattisgarh. The data has been collected by interview from various stakeholders residing in the forest villages such as NTFPs collector, traders, government officials as well as forest department staffs who were involved to implementation of conservation of biodiversity in these villages. Moreover, metrological data (temperature, humidity and rainfall last 20 years) have also been consulted for this study. Climate change impacts are affecting the food, health and economic security of these tribal communities as forest areas go through drought or flood conditions. The study attempted at understanding climate change effect on NTFP-related activities and adaptive measures taken by local tribal communities to cope with climate change challenges. The study also reveals that NTFPs production rate decreases due to declining of rainfall, increasing temperature and other factors. The ecologically sustainable development need must be necessary among the people of the study area.","PeriodicalId":227852,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Man - An International Journal","volume":"20 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125837105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Irrespective of cause of mental retardation, the problem of diet pattern and its effects remain same for every special individual. A balanced diet rich in calories, protein, vitamins and minerals is required for pregnant women and young children for normal brain development. Lack of adequate diet can have direct and indirect effects on brain development and thereby increase the risk of subnormal development. Diet plays an important part in the development of every individual. Challenged individuals may resist new foods, have definite likes and dislikes and sometimes can't manage eating food as some of them may find it difficult to recognise the food item. The present study aims to assess the nutritional status of mentally retarded school-going children of Pune city, and the objectives are to study the dietary practices, choices and preferences of these children. The sample is from low economic and educational status. The data of 259 boys of age group 8 to 16 years is collected from 13 special schools of Pune city with the help of diet survey and questionnaire, where in detailed case histories and psychological assessments of these mentally challenged children are available. The data shows that 76.79% children are of various grades of under nutrition and 1.39% children are under obese category. As age increases, the level of under nourishment decreases. Evidence of over nourishment is seen after the age of 11 years. Consumption of bakery items is more in these children. Consumption of tea is more than milk intake.","PeriodicalId":227852,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Man - An International Journal","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123278190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
