Using the data of social enterprise and labor force survey in Vietnam, we conduct a regression analysis to address this question. We focus on the rapid growth period of social enterprises in Vietnam during the early 2010s. Our results suggest that, as the number of social enterprises increases, average labor earnings increase, the probabilities of being unemployed and being self-employed decrease, and average working hours increase. Since our study evaluates the effect of social enterprise development on the outcomes for the overall labor market rather than the social enterprise sector alone, it provides justification for promoting such a policy from policymakers’ point of view.","PeriodicalId":227819,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Social Aspects & Impact (Topic)","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133300637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Critical Realism (CR) offers an archetype that allows us to go beyond this fault line and analyze social mobility as a transformational endeavor. We discuss this in the context of studying social mobility in the new Information Technology (IT) sector of India, where CR provides us with a solid bulwark for our ethnographies in two organizations in this sector. We show that mobility is enhanced in an arena of multiple and diverse structures when agents are able to go beyond the apparent (empirical) circumstances thrown up by structures in a flux and discern the actual forces at work. The intransient real encompassing these multiple structural possibilities offers them the flexibility to carve such a path.","PeriodicalId":227819,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Social Aspects & Impact (Topic)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130267674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We confront these claims with the data in two settings. In the first setting, we examine the August 2019 declaration by the Business Roundtable (BRT) that a corporation’s purpose is to deliver value to all stakeholders, rather than to solely maximize shareholder value. Relative to within-industry peer firms, 118 publicly listed signatories of the BRT statement (i) commit environmental and labor-related compliance violations more often (and pay more in compliance penalties); (ii) spend more on lobbying policymakers and receiving more in targeted government subsidies; and (iii) BRT CEOs receive higher abnormal compensation and BRT firms have a smaller proportion of independent directors on the board. A concurrent trend is the rapid expansion of socially responsible funds. Relative to same-issuer non-ESG (environmental, social and governance focused) funds, we find that 145 ESG funds over 2010-2018 contain portfolio firms with poorer labor and environmental track records, spend more on lobbying and receive larger state subsidies relative to portfolio firms in non-ESG funds. In sum, we find that socially responsible firms and funds do not appear to follow through on proclamations of concerns for stakeholders.","PeriodicalId":227819,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Social Aspects & Impact (Topic)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123595432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study mainly focused on the elderly who were benefiting from the SAGE program that is those aged 65 years and above. However, this limit was lowered to 60 years in order to accommodate people from vulnerable regions like Karamoja. The SAGE survey was conducted at the point of receipt of the support, questions included the impact of the intervention, dependents, and the saving habits, and each eligible member was entitled to receive shillings 25000. A descriptive analysis on the impact of the SAGE intervention was analyzed and logistic regression on the likelihood to save the SAGE receipts was analyzed using odds ratios. Multivariate analysis indicated that physical status, health status, school attendance of children, and status of the beneficiary are significant predictors of saving SAGE transfer. In conclusion, SAGE has played a big role in improving the welfare of the elderly in Uganda, majority of the recipients are able to access basic needs like food, medical care, and education for the children in the household and also carry out investment in micro-enterprises. However, according to the feedback from the SAGE survey, the government should seriously think of mobilizing more funds to enroll more eligible people and also increase the amount of money given out as transfers twenty-five thousand shillings were currently given is still on the lower side given the rising standard of living in the country.","PeriodicalId":227819,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Social Aspects & Impact (Topic)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115707404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The starting point is the law of value added. Definitions of some concepts in relation to social responsibility are proposed, such as elements, dimensions, fields, types, forms, principles, and aspects. Using a set of Gallup World Poll and World Values Survey indicators of Palestinian residents’ perceptions and values, we find that Palestinians’ views of various socio-economic institutions, opportunities and outcomes have been low. Palestinians’ satisfaction with their living conditions, economy and political leadership is low, and lags behind that of residents in other non-GCC Arab countries, particularly before the start of Arab Spring revolutions. The trends in Palestine and in non-GCC countries converge to some degree for a number of indicators in the years following the Arab Spring, reflecting political and economic developments in the Arab region as well as in Palestine. Palestinians’ gloomy sentiments are primarily due to the protracted Israeli occupation accompanied by repressive security and economic policies. These have fueled pessimism in Palestinians’ perceptions of institutions around them, their lives, their rights, and their future opportunities. Restrictions on Palestinians’ mobility, the occupation of large parts of Palestinian territory, the withholding and sapping of public finances, the denial of business opportunities, and the resulting economic deprivation of the majority of Palestinians – all of these undermine Palestinians’ spirit, interest in democratization of their state, and outlook on the future. People’s resentment and hopelessness periodically flare up in civil or cross-border hostilities, thwarting any possibility of normalization and socio-economic progress, and keeping Palestinians in a perpetual deprivation trap. Economic prosperity and social stability in Palestine will prevail only once Palestinians’ human rights, economic opportunities, and trust in government institutions are reestablished. This calls for domestic reforms, strengthening of the balance of checks on power, but most importantly renegotiation of the role of Israeli forces in the occupied territory and enforcement of the new arrangement.","PeriodicalId":227819,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Social Aspects & Impact (Topic)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121018531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The foreclosure crisis of 2005-2010 led to a concentration of abandoned foreclosed homes in disadvantaged neighborhoods and these neighborhoods became the targets of a policy intervention, the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. This study employs a mixed-method longitudinal approach to investigate the impact of this foreclosed home rehabilitation policy on neighborhood social conditions and physical conditions in a highly disadvantaged neighborhood. We compared this to a quasi-control group of similar abandoned, foreclosed neighborhood homes not selected for the program. Results indicated that the rehabilitation of a foreclosed home had marginally significant negative impact on social conditions and no impact on the physical conditions of nearby homes. There were no differences between the program properties and the control properties, except that the control properties were rehabilitated more quickly. To further explore the quantitative findings, we divide the qualitative results into four major themes emerging from the data: indifference to foreclosures, threats to the neighborhood, call for community cohesion, and the importance of homeownership. These results indicate that the affected residents believe that neighborhood stabilization efforts would have benefitted more from programs that aimed to improve homeownership opportunities and increase neighborhood levels of social cohesion and social capital.","PeriodicalId":227819,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Social Aspects & Impact (Topic)","volume":"121 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120862620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focus on the provision of local public goods as the central issue for the governance of low-income housing. Governmental intervention in various forms is discussed. Factors that affect the governance structure from the efficiency perspective and the equity perspective, respectively, are explored in our theoretical framework. We then apply it to the case of the Chinese city. In particular, we analyze the governance structures of several major types of low-income housing including public rental housing, affordable housing, private low-income housing, work unit compound and urban village.","PeriodicalId":227819,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Social Aspects & Impact (Topic)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131837117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
