As opposed to radiant heat sources such as ultrasound or microwave radiation, this system utilizes simple direct conversion of electrical energy to heat via resistive elements placed in implantable catheters. Heat transfer occurs via conduction and blood convection. Diagnostic evaluation of the phagocytic capacity was carried out for patients with liver diseases on the basis of the separation efficiency of the monocytes. Results of the magnetic separation showed that the phagocytic capacities of hepatoma and liver cirrhosis patients were significantly lower than those of healthy volunteers. The system uses click-evoked auditory brainstem responses. Online threshold determination is accomplished by two modules: a response recognition unit which determines if a response is present and a threshold tracking unit which utilizes a modified PEST (parameter estimation by sequential testing) algorithm to determine the click intensity testing level. Thresholds obtained manually and automatically are compared in 161 tests from 62 ears. Live and taped speech are used to evaluate the performance of the device. The LDM system must be improved to provide accurate measurement, because there are some inherent disturbances on measuring the flow velocity in a microscopic area. The authors investigate the spurious Doppler signals, which are the most serious problem in LDM measurement, and develop an optical arrangement for eliminating the effect of spurious components.
