The aim of the current study is to investigate in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of Daucus carota L. seed extracts . The hot extraction method was used to obtain different extracts . The physiochemical testing, FTIR and mineral content estimation of the seed powder were conducted. UV Visible profiling of the extracts was also done. The in vitro antioxidant activity was performed by using the variety of assays included DPPH, ferric reducing power, hydrogen peroxide scavenging capacity, and phosphomolybdenum test and ascorbic acid was used as a reference. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity was assessed by inhibition of protein denaturation method and the diclofenac sodium was taken as a standard. The in vivo anti-inflammatory activity was examined by using carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model by taking aspirin as a standard. The results of the UV Visible spectroscopy and FTIR scans showed the presence of various functional groups. The existence of many important primary and secondary metabolites was also confirmed by phytochemical analysis. The physicochemical parameters of seed powder were found to be within the recommended range as stated in USP, 2015. The present study has verified the antioxidant effect of the plant seeds and methanolic extract was found to be more active as compared to the other extracts. The study outcomes have confirmed a significant in vitro inhibition of the protein denaturation and in vivo reduction of carrageenan-induced inflammation in the rat paw. It is concluded that the plant seeds have the potential to reduce inflammation, however toxicological and clinical studies are desired in the future.","PeriodicalId":22588,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Animal and Plant Sciences","volume":"142 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80141092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"EFFECTS OF DRYING METHODS ON AMOUNTS OF PHENOLIC AND FLAVONOID COMPOUNDS AND ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY OF PLANTAGO LANCEOLATA L.","authors":"F. Ergün","doi":"10.36899/japs.2023.1.0604","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36899/japs.2023.1.0604","url":null,"abstract":"In this study, the effects of some drying methods on the total amount of phenolic and flavonoid substances and antioxidant activity of the Plantago lanceolata L. plant were investigated. The plant samples were divided into three groups; the first group dried in sunlight (P1), the second group dried in a thermostatic oven at 55 °C (P2) and the third group dried in the shade (P3). After drying process, the total phenolic and flavonoid substance amounts, antioxidant activities and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) free radical removal and reducing power capacities of the extracts obtained from the samples belonging to the groups were determined. In this study, the total phenolic substance amounts were determined as 15.65±2.25 mg GAE/g, 15.20 ±1.48 mg GAE/g, 6.97 ±0.26 mg GAE/g in experimental groups, respectively. The flavonoid substances were determined as 83.85 ±3.49 mg QE/g, 57.37 ±7.04 mg QE/g and 53.65 ±3.61 mg QE/g, in experimental groups, respectively. In addition, the highest DPPH radical removal activity and the highest Fe 3+ -Fe 2+ reducing capacity were found in P3 at all concentrations. To conclude, shade-drying is more prefeable than the others with respect to phytochemical content of dried samples of P. lanceolata plant, suggesting that there is a need for new studies on how phytochemical contents are affected by such applications.","PeriodicalId":22588,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Animal and Plant Sciences","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81041541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
