Approaches that would simplify maintenance and growth are proposed with the understanding that an MSS entails more qualities than just 'big'. The Model's design should encourage the development of MSSs which permit sites to manage this data resource intelligently and continuously into the future. With this goal in mind, an MSS programmable interface is proposed, and attention is given to how sites could use it to add their own control and adjust to standards that change in ways that may not suit their environment. Plans to unite central and distributed servers, with the Model-based MSS Server as the focus of the complex, are also described. Many of these ideas are based on the observations of the author's own Central File Archival and Migration Service (CFAM), which has served Cray users since January 1989 and workstations since June 1991.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225568,"journal":{"name":"[1993] Proceedings Twelfth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage systems","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124620006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors describe the current status of a collaborative effort which focuses on managing data produced by climate modeling applications. The project is aimed at significantly improving the accessibility and ease of use of large scientific databases, in the context of a hierarchical mass storage system. The following aspects of the work are considered in detail: physical database design, metadata, storage, the mass storage system interface, and reduced data sets.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225568,"journal":{"name":"[1993] Proceedings Twelfth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage systems","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131334004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Needing a major data repository system, ECMWF started in 1983 to work with the common file system (CFS) from Los Alamos. The system entered production at the end of 1984, and in October 1992 held approximately 7.5 terabytes of data. A separate project called MARS (Meteorological Archive and Retrieval System) was established to construct a meteorologist's interface to the stored data, and to deliver sections and concatenations of stored data objects in a form suitable for meteorological research. In the process of commissioning CFS (from Los Alamos) and MARS, a number of lessons have been learned about the way in which data-access, data-conversion, and data-delivery applications need to interface to the basic data service, and about the kind of structures needed on the data server to support the application layer. ECMWF is not reviewing the requirements for its next-generation data handling system. ECMWF is carrying out experiments on various commercially available systems in the final quarter of 1992, in the hope of identifying a suitable (set of) candidate(s) for a successor to CFS.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225568,"journal":{"name":"[1993] Proceedings Twelfth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage systems","volume":"65 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114004302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A bitfile managed by MaSSIVE can be a complete, self-contained UNIX file system, specific to a particular MaSSIVE client. MaSSIVE will stage whole file systems from archival storage onto on-line storage devices and then provide its clients with raw block access to the staged file system. It will consist of cooperating processes distributed across a network of supermicrocomputers. The client interface to a file system will be implemented through a device driver that will permit access to MaSSIVE on-line storage devices. The device interface through a high-bandwidth data fabric to the storage device will use common device controller-specific protocols. As file systems are unmounted by clients or clients disconnect from the data fabric, the file systems may be migrated back to archive storage and removed from on-line storage.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225568,"journal":{"name":"[1993] Proceedings Twelfth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage systems","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122974790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This model, based on the Object Description Language (ODL) and consisting of keyword/value statements, is both human- and computer-readable and has been used to label large volumes of science data being prepared for CD-ROM archive volumes. The use of ODL for defining the objects that compose the PDS model, as well as its use in the actual labeling, has shown it to be a powerful yet simple tool for supporting the science-data archive process.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225568,"journal":{"name":"[1993] Proceedings Twelfth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131270241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They present a specific approach to integrating AFS with mass storage: they consider the mass store itself to be the file system, not a bag on the side of a disk-based file system. Instead of developing a back-end server to manage the movement of data files between traditional disk-based storage systems (used, in the present case, by AFS) and magnetic-tape or optical-based mass storage systems (of which AFS has little or no knowledge), the authors envision the mass store as a first-class data repository. A traditional disk-based file system serves as a very large cache of the mass store system. On top of that is another, large, high-speed memory cache. All storage other than the mass store is used exclusively for caching. In this approach, cache management policies are of fundamental importance.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225568,"journal":{"name":"[1993] Proceedings Twelfth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114291781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This overcomes the traditional input/output (I/O) bottleneck of massively parallel machines by storing the data on disks within the high-speed interconnection network. In addition, the file system, called RAMA (Rapid Access to Massive Archive), requires little internode synchronization, removing another common bottleneck in parallel processor file systems. Support for a large tertiary storage system can easily be integrated into the file system; in fact, RAMA runs most efficiently when tertiary storage is used.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225568,"journal":{"name":"[1993] Proceedings Twelfth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage systems","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123461964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design goal is to create distributed indices that are highly parallel, require low overhead, and can perform data load balancing. These structures can be used to provide highly parallel and scalable indexing on a multiprocessor, and a versatile and low-overhead dynamic index on a distributed system. The first distributed-search structure considered was the dB-tree, a distributed B-tree. It was shown how a highly-parallel but low-overhead dB-tree can be implemented by carefully controlling the degree of replication, and by using lazy updates. A significant use of a distributed index is to aid in load balancing. It was shown experimentally that simple heuristics using out-of-data load information can perform very effective load balancing.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225568,"journal":{"name":"[1993] Proceedings Twelfth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage systems","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121059747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prototype study suggests that it is feasible from both technical and cost perspectives to store not just metadata, but large satellite images in a DBMS. The actual location of the data, whether in the DBMS, file system, or tape archive, is transparent to clients, allowing cost/performance optimization to be performed without affecting the interface to the client. Further, in common cases where database inserts can be bypassed, the performance of the prototype is equivalent to file system input/output (I/O).<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225568,"journal":{"name":"[1993] Proceedings Twelfth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage systems","volume":"333 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131626149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
