Obtained results show that this fishery resource is overexploited. CEDA software computed MSY in a range between 4,600-4,900 t (tons). On the other hand, ASPIC range for MSY estimation remained between 4,800-5,200 t for this fishery resource. It is vivid that MSY range computed by both the computer packages overlap each other. CEDA showed conservation in MSY estimation as compared to ASPIC. Moreover, ASPIC results showed higher R 2 values. Considering the MSY estimates, it is recommended that target reference point of MSY for cephalopod fishery resource in Pakistani marine waters should be around 4,900-5,000 t. Harvest of this fishery resource beyond 5,200 t should be considered as limiting reference point. Thus, concrete steps are directly needed to conserve this fishery resource for future.","PeriodicalId":22529,"journal":{"name":"The international journal of marine science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88614224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two methods were adopted, Active and Passive, for determination of Radon in which an environmental radon monitoring system comprising a radon-cup, an etching system, and a track counting system, was constructed. The radon cup is a cylindrical chamber with a radius of 3.5 cm and a height of 15 cm in combination with a CR-39 detector. The effected radium concentrations from sediment samples were found to range from 0.0013 to 0.0049 with an average value of 0.0028 Bq/Kg. Concentrations of radon measured by passive method were 132±34 to 414±108 with average value 287±45 Bq/m 3 and by active method were 401±26 to 145±9 with average value 263±20 Bq/m 3 . The area and mass exhalation rates were found to be 0.1 to 0.31 with average value of 0.220 Bq/m 2 /h and 0.002 to 0.006 with average value 0.004 Bq/kg/h respectively. The values are found to be safe for sediment use.","PeriodicalId":22529,"journal":{"name":"The international journal of marine science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72657322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

R. venosa shells act as substrate for a great number of different fouling organisms, among which macroalgae are the most important. We studied the fouling communities on two ecomorphs (sandy and rocky) of R. venosa from the northern part of the Black Sea from 2008 to 2017. The fouling algae taxa were listed and the frequency of their occurrence on two ecomorphs of R. venosa was determined. 65 algae species were found, namely Chlorophyta – 20, Ochrophyta – 16 and Rhodophyta – 29 species. Typical alga species of sandy and rocky R. venosa ecomorphs and their assemblages’ composition was featured. It was found that the expansion of algae species distribution on the soft substrate is associated with R. venosa . During the period of R. venosa populations’ development this invasive species has become an important element of the Black Sea ecosystem which contributes to saving biological diversity of the benthic community due to formation and spreading of its consortium complexes.","PeriodicalId":22529,"journal":{"name":"The international journal of marine science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73260404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The red seaweed (Rhodophyta) is commonly exploited for the production of polysaccharides. Carrageenan is one of the commercial polysaccharide. It is complex of D-galactose 3, 6-anhydro D-galactose and monoesterified sulphuric acid found in cell wall of red seaweeds, used as an emulsifier, a binder. It is also used for suspension and stabilization in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food processing. Hypnea is a red algal genus and well known carrageenan producing marine plant. Therefore three species of Hypnea : H. musciformis, H. pannosa and H. valentiae were collected from the four different coastal areas (Buleji, Hawks Bay, Manora and Paradise Point) of Karachi coast for the extraction of carrageenan in present study. The highest carrageenan extracted from H. valentiae (18-46.93%) as compared with the other two studied species. The high carrageenan concentration was mostly found in winter season. The total biomass 6846.79 g/m 2 of three species of Hypnea was recorded during the study period and the highest biomass was recorded in January and the lowest in August. The highest biomass was obtained from Manora coast as compared to other three coastal areas. There was significant correlation was found in between carrageenan and biomass. From the present investigation it is concluded that studied seaweeds species of Hypnea have good quantity of carrageenan and can be used in industries for the manufacturing and production of carrageenan.","PeriodicalId":22529,"journal":{"name":"The international journal of marine science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81364375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Barbus paludinosus (Matemba) were dried using open sun drying and solar tent driers. Samples were collected in newly bought polythene bags, well labelled and collected in cooler boxes transported ready for laboratory analysis. One gram (1 g) representative sample was obtained aseptically from the muscle of the fresh and dried straight fin barb (Matemba) samples. The samples were grounded and serial dilutions (10 -1 to 10 -4 ) of the homogenized samples were made using sterile distilled water. Fish samples were analysed for total plate count (TPC), E. coli counts and for pathogenic organisms (Salmonella) following the methods prescribed by (AOAC, 2000). Each analysis was carried out in triplicates. There were significant differences (P < 0.05), with respect to total viable bacterial counts between open sun dried and solar tent dried B. paludinosus (1.6 x 10 6 cfu/g, 1.4 x 10 6 cfu/g, respectively). Open sun dried B. paludinosus harboured significantly higher total viable counts as well as a higher population of Escherichia coli compared to solar tent dried Barbus paludinosus . Overall, bacterial populations were not above the marginally acceptable norms (1 x 10 7 cfu/g) for both processing methods implying that the two methods can be deployable without public health concerns.","PeriodicalId":22529,"journal":{"name":"The international journal of marine science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91542997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Japan is one of country who succeed to empowered economy of coastal community by diversify coastal and fisheries livelihoods. This study aims; to explore Japanese experiences on coastal resources management, to assess the fishing activity in case study area of Hiroshima, and to describe livelihood strategy in coastal fishery of case study area of Hiroshima. Primary data were collected from representatives of shrimp-trawl fishermen, and key informants using structured and semi-structured questionnaires. Secondary data such as statistical data and reports and books from previous studies were used as preliminary information. The data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis and qualitative contents analysis. The results of the study showed that Japan has many years’ experiences to manage coastal fishery in effective and sustainable ways using community-based coastal fishery management and co-management approach. Meanwhile, Fisheries Cooperative Associations (FCAs) and Fisheries Management Organization (FMOs) are as institutional tools. In case study of coastal fishery activity, shrimp-trawl fishery in Akitsu has been manage by FCA, even the number of fishermen and their activity gradually decrease. However, the problems faced related to the sustainability of fishing activities in Akitsu is related to catch decreased, initial investment, regeneration of the fishing activities itself, and upwelling in the past. Increased a number of aging fishermen and no successors are another problems in sustainability of fisheries livelihoods. In fact, young people escape from the fishery communities to work in the cities and aging people remain in fishery community. This is occurred in shrimp-trawl fishery ( Sokobikiami ) in Akitsu. Therefore, local government as well as central government can expand the oyster culture by providing incentives or subsidies to attract young generation back to the area to pursue this business.","PeriodicalId":22529,"journal":{"name":"The international journal of marine science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81188652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
