To extend access to a wider area, even nationally, and to a variety of sensor requires a standardized sensor network. We believe that the NIST-supported IEEE 1451 smart transducer standard is best suited for this role and in particular the IEEE 1451.5 version (wireless) which was developed for this purpose. However, while the Dot 5 protocol (or Dot 0) works well for moderate to high power devices, it is too verbose for the many low-power wireless sensors because the message size is relatively large, albeit much less than a typical Internet (TCP/IP) message. To reduce the message size, and thus improve the battery life, we employ the SNAP (Scaleable Node Addressable Protocol) format for data and the more concept Dot 4 (IEEE 1451.4) TEDS rather than the Dot 5/Dot 0 protocol. The sensitivity of an existing U-bend probe is increased by extending the exposed core to a coil shape of one and a half turns and by forming the core to a meander- shape with three bends. Using the visible wavelength area (VIS) and methanol/ethanol concentrations from 0% to 10% it is shown that the sensitivity of the meander shape sensor enables the determination of methanol concentrations of better than 0.5% and of ethanol concentrations of better than 0.2% at 650 nm. Measurements on fresh apples were also made over a ten-week storage period. Data were taken on the external surfaces of the fruit and on tissue samples from the edible internal tissue. Soluble solids content (SSC), indicative of sweetness, was used for melons as the quality factor for correlation with permittivity. Dielectric constant and loss factor correlations with SSC were low, but a high correlation was obtained between the SSC and permittivity from a complex-plane plot of dielectric constant and loss factor, each divided by SSC. However, quality prediction from this relationship was not very high. This system contained an array of metal oxide detectors and custom made electronics for acquiring olfactory signature of the volatile organic compounds in the headspace of the meat packages produced by detector arrays. The acquired signals were processed using three wavelet packet transforms (WPT) for simultaneous noise reduction and compression. The coefficients of wavelet packets were used as features for developing statistical classification models using bootstrapped linear and quadratic discriminant analysis techniques. Currently envisioned applications have run into practical limitations regarding the implementation of classic sensor configurations such as standard focal plane arrays or spectrometers. Compressive sensing offers an alternative architecture for remote, distributed and networked sensors that may significantly alleviate the current limitations on Homeland Security applications. This paper considers the measurement matrix and reconstruction algorithms appropriate to this application. Mixed metal oxides of Bi2O3 and Nb2O5 formed the basis for thick film capacitive sensors investigated in this research work. AD5933 impedance converter was used to monitor real-time changes in the electrical properties of tested capacitors. The system showed superior sensitivity to the pH level, with instant response being recorded. Heating the sensors restored their initial properties, and they were repeatedly used for pH sensing. Process automation with I2M can communicate through either wires or using wireless communication, without any hardware or software changes. We used FPGA resources to implement the I2M functions FPGA, with a NIOS II processor and ZigBee communication system (IEEE802.15), as well as RS232 serial standard. Part of the project was done in the SOPC Builder environment, which gave the designer flexibility and speed to implement the NIOS II-based microprocessor system. Security of data will be an important factor for their full adoption. Efficient key exchange protocols are required for Security of large scale densely deployed wireless networks of resource limited sensor nodes. Huang et al. proposed a hybrid authenticated key exchange protocol for secure communication between a sensor and a security manager in WSN. In order to provide assurance that these protocols are verifiably secure and trustworthy it is necessary to perform a formal verification on their design specifications. In this paper Huang et al. 's protocol is discussed and a formal verification is performed using the Coffey-Saidha-Newe (CSN) modal logic.
