This paper proposes a new WLAN access mechanism as an alternative to the HCF (Hybrid Coordination Function) scheme defined by the IEEE 802.1 le workgroup to provide QoS in wireless LANs. POHA (Priority Oriented Hybrid Access) is a complete medium control protocol, it combines a polling based and a TDM A access scheme, provides QoS for all types of communications, adapts to the dynamic conditions of modern WLANs, optimizes channel utilization and station feedback, provides medium contention fairness, eliminates collisions, differentiates traffic based on priorities, supports dynamic resource assignment, and instantly negotiates the quality levels of the offered traffic streams trying to support multiple streams with best possible quality. POHA, compared with HCF, exhibits generally superior performance.","PeriodicalId":224906,"journal":{"name":"2007 14th IEEE Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115831558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specular reflections are not dominant and the result is more comparable with diffuse scattering. Evaluating this channel can be done using acoustic theory. However, this theory is described by a parameter, eta whose physical meaning lacks of description. Reverberation chamber theory can therefore be applied to estimate for example the delay spread inside a confined environment. This theory also suffers of some drawbacks. The most important is that it is only valide for sufficiently high Q factor. A car is a classical confined environment. Therefore, measurements inside a car are presented showing some common characteristics with a reverberation chamber.","PeriodicalId":224906,"journal":{"name":"2007 14th IEEE Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127617724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within service management, admission control has been recognized as a convenient mechanism to provide high-quality communication by ensuring resources availability. It represents a meaning in fulfilling the contracted service level agreement (SLA) between the user and the network provider. This paper provides a thorough analysis on different classification approaches for admission control techniques, while identifying their characteristics, differences and analogies. It gives a more detailed analysis on the measurement-based admission control, and introduces an admission control approach based on measurements. The performance of this algorithm is illustrated through simulation results.","PeriodicalId":224906,"journal":{"name":"2007 14th IEEE Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114310601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the application of spectrum pooling in OFDM-based Cognitive Radio system there will be subcarriers that are deactivated due to the access of Licensed Users. The unloaded subcarriers that are caused by Licensed Users access create problems in performing channel estimation. The unloaded subcarriers restrict putting the pilot symbols in time and frequency lattice. This issue should be considered in the designing pilot symbols grid. In the part I of this paper, new pilot patterns for OFDM-based Cognitive Radio channel estimation are proposed. These new pilot patterns are the modification of rectangular pilot patterns by shifting the pilot subcarricrs into the adjacent subcarriers which are free from the interference of Licensed Users. Using the proposed pilot patterns, the channel estimation based on two cascaded one dimensional (2 times 1-D) Wiener filter is investigated by considering the appearance of narrowband and wideband Licensed Users. Results have shown that the proposed pilot pattern outperforms the regular pilot pattern by around 6.5 dB gain at Mean Square Error value of 2 times 10-3 in the case of narrowband interference.","PeriodicalId":224906,"journal":{"name":"2007 14th IEEE Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127453886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary application of the EUROPCOM system is to provide position tracking of rescue personnel within the disaster zone. Currently no such technologies or systems exist, which can provide the envisaged functionality. The paper proposes a lightweight and self-adaptive ad hoc routing scheme that takes into consideration the operational characteristics and requirements of the EUROPCOM system. The proposed scheme does not introduce dedicated ad hoc routing packets. It takes advantage of data packets (e.g., positioning information) broadcast by each device. Routing information, which is needed to construct routes, is embedded in the header of the data packets. The optimum route is chosen based on hop count and congestion level of each device along the path. Our routing scheme is bandwidth-and energy-efficient.","PeriodicalId":224906,"journal":{"name":"2007 14th IEEE Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"7 10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117104763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This enables information exchange in areas without a pre-deployed communications infrastructure, making it an appealing technology for the military community. The focus of this article is on TCP throughput measurements for multi-hop networking based on WLAN technology using COTS devices. The present study shows that the throughput as well as the stability of the routing topology for ad-hoc multi-hop communications do not always meet military requirements, and that special-purpose solutions and implementations are hence needed. Indoor as well as outdoor measurements are presented and compared with existing analytical research on throughput degradation in wireless multi-hop links. While results from multi-hop indoor measurements with MAC address filtering where generally in-line with analytical throughput curves, outdoor measurements indicate link instabilities for connections involving three hops or more as well as lower throughput. The article hence points to the need for \"real-life\" experiments in addition to existing network analysis and simulations.","PeriodicalId":224906,"journal":{"name":"2007 14th IEEE Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115366763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the performance of a four-station network is assessed at the physical layer, in terms of bit error rate (BER) and throughput rate. On the one hand, we analyse the system performance w.r.t. the antenna pattern on reception and on the other hand we study the effects of different network or antenna set-ups. However, the performance of linear detection schemes is affected by the residual inter-symbol interference (ISI) and the correlated noise present in decision variables. In order to improve the performance, a decision feedback equalization (DFE) scheme is proposed in this paper. In the feedback stage, an optimal Wiener filter is designed to predict and suppress the residual ISI and the correlated noise caused by the channel equalization and code despreading in the feedforward stage. Simulations show that the proposed DFE scheme significantly outperforms the conventional linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) receiver. By this scheme, a noise penalty between MC-CDMA and ideally coded OFDM is largely reduced.","PeriodicalId":224906,"journal":{"name":"2007 14th IEEE Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126882265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
