Biomarkers, psychosocial and lifestyle are the risk indicators of type 2 diabetes mellitus. To hold back the onward progression of the disease among type 2 diabetic populations early screening for anthropometric and biochemical profiling and life style modification is the need of the hour. Hence with this, the objective of the paper is to explore the association between life style behaviour and biomarker in selected type II diabetic patients in Coimbatore. Five hundred type-II diabetic patient both male (237) and female (263) between the age group of 35-45 years were purposively selected for the conduct of the study. Using a well structured interview schedule the background information, medical history life style and dietary pattern were elicited. Anthropometric measurements, apart from biochemical analysis (fasting blood glucose, post prandial and lipid profile), assessment of diabetic specific Biomarker for HbA1c was done using standard procedures for all the selected 500 type II diabetic patients. The result shows that more than 50% of both male and female Type II diabetic subjects showed uncontrolled Post Prandial Glucose level (PPBS) and Glycosylated Haemoglobin (HbA1C) level, less than 35% of Type II diabetic subjects showed unsatisfactory Fasting Glucose level (FBS).","PeriodicalId":22457,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of nutrition and dietetics","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88983878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Corona Virus disease became prevalent all over the world due to its wide-outbreak at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, China. In order to repress the prevailing infection, lockdown was established all over the world. In India, the lockdown was initiated on March 22 by the Government that posed a shutdown to major community services. A standard questionnaire was formulated based on the samples' anthropometric measurements, dietary habits, physical activity, sleep duration and screen time. Random samples (n=300) were involved in this study with no exclusion criteria. This observational study was conducted online, where Google Forms was used as a platform to collect the data.  Paired t test was used as means of statistical analysis in order to obtain the difference in weight and BMI before and during lockdown. For other parameters, standard deviation and diagrammatical representations such as Bar Diagrams and Pie Charts were used. Compelling evidence showed that there was an elevation in the weight and BMI among the samples. There was an escalation in the snacking frequency, screen time and sleep duration whereas there was depreciation in the physical activity which thus promoted a sedentary lifestyle during lockdown. Distinct lifestyle modifications were visible during the COVID-19 lockdown which advocated sedentary lifestyle in the South-Indian population. Interventions must be taken to prevent adverse health outcomes in the population.","PeriodicalId":22457,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of nutrition and dietetics","volume":"29 6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78168257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Estrogen deficiency has been linked to the rapid increase in CVD in women who have undergone natural or surgical menopause. Garlic (Allium sativum) has played an important dietary as well as medicinal role in human history. The study was conducted to assess correlation of garlic consumption on lipid level among postmenopausal women with dyslipidemia. In this clinical trial 180 respondents willing to participate in intervention program, who met inclusion criteria, were divided into three groups, control (n=60), Exp-I (garlic eaters n=60) and Exp-II (non-garlic eaters n=60). Dry garlic powder was prepared using standard procedure and analyzed for its active phytonutrients. A 500 mg of dry garlic powder capsules two per day were given to the respondents for 12 weeks. Biochemical analysis for cholesterol levels were measured in the standard laboratory before and after the study. Questionnaire-cum- interview method was used to obtain relevant information. Pearson correlation and one-way analysis of variance tests were conducted to analyze the data. Mean age of the respondents was found to be (53.6 ± 0.89) years. Pretest cholesterol levels in control (211.2 ± 6.24), Exp-I (212.2 ± 6.41) and Exp-II (212.4 ± 6.74) was observed. The results indicate that all the groups exhibit negative correlation with total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides but the values of control group are non-significant and the relationship is weak, whereas values of experimental groups (Exp-I and Exp-II) shows strong negative correlation which is significant at 1 % level. Strong positive correlation observed with HDL among experimental groups and weak positive non-significant correlation was seen with control group. It can be concluded that functional property of garlic has positive correlation in managing dyslipidemia among postmenopausal women. Significant improvement in the lipid level was observed with garlic intervention.","PeriodicalId":22457,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of nutrition and dietetics","volume":"76 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73570282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, consumers opting for non-dairy milk alternative are gradually increasing due to medical and ethical reasons. Sesame seeds are the most underutilized and low maintenance crop with abundant health benefits and functional properties. In spite of its superior nutritional quality and high calcium content (1174 mg), the diversification and commercialization of novel sesame seed-based food products is still insufficient and certainly needs research focus. The present study was aimed to formulate sesame seed based non-dairy milk alternatives and quality evaluation of the same. Decorticated sesame seeds were purchased from local market, Chennai and subjected to simple household processing techniques such as soaking, grinding and filtration. Soaked sesame seeds were subjected to grinding process in domestic blender and filtered using triple layer muslin cloth to remove the slurry. The obtained sesame seed extracts were pasteurized and stored in pre sterilized glass bottles at 40°C and subjected to physiochemical, proximate, sensory and cost analysis. The results of quality analysis of sesame seed extract revealed that the extract possessed appreciable nutritional composition with desirable sensory attributes and also found to be low cost. The study implied that formulation of novel and acceptable non-dairy product from indigenous low-cost ingredients such as sesame seeds was feasible and suits well to population seeking non - dairy milk alternatives.","PeriodicalId":22457,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of nutrition and dietetics","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78622550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The selected 120 tween girls (Pre-Pubertal) were randomly divided into two groups namely experimental group (PNP) and control group. Each group consist of 60 girls (n=60). Girls who were interested in educational intervention on physical activity and nutritional concerns to prevent precocious puberty were selected as subjects. From each school, two groups namely - control and experimental groups were taken as per the students’ as per their interest. Experimental group underwent PNP training for a period of 6 weeks with the help of the comprehensive module. The control group did not participate in any intervention apart from their regular program of the curriculum. School based educational intervention programme on pre-adolescent’s physical fitness and nutritional fitness can be effective and an important way of enhancing pre-adolescent girls’ knowledge attitude and practice on their physical and nutritional fitness in preventing precocious puberty. Need for School based training on sensitive issues especially for girls can be included in the curriculum. Similar studies can be conducted in wider scale to create awareness among the tween girls with scheduled training and traditional recipes. Educational interventions are found to be effective in bringing changes among the group of girls than in individual. Schools can encourage such intervention programmes.","PeriodicalId":22457,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of nutrition and dietetics","volume":"26 4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72825644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies in Middle East countries showed high rate of vitamin D deficiency among Muslim women1. Hence, the present study aims to find the effect of lifestyle pattern and cultural practices on vitamin D status of Muslim women. Two hundred Muslim women between the age of 25 to 45 years were selected in Coimbatore city. Details regarding education, occupation, cultural dress, sunlight exposure, sunscreen usage and physical activity patterns were collected using a designed interview schedule. Clinical examination was conducted for signs and symptoms of vitamin D and calcium deficiency. Nineteen per cent of the women were between 25-30 years, 44 per cent were between 31-40 years and 37 per cent were between 41-45 years of age. Eighty eight per cent were house wives and 91.5 per cent of them wore cultural dress, among which 59 percentage wore chaddar in black colour. Sunlight exposure was less than 30 mins in 39.5 percentage of women. Seventy five per cent of them did not exercise. Back pain, bone loss, body pain and hair loss were prominent symptoms among the women. There was a significant association (P = 0.008) between sunlight exposure, type and colour of the cultural dress, back pain, pain in bone and bone loss. Hence, it may be concluded that exposure to sunlight at home may be recommended to improve vitamin D status of Muslim women.","PeriodicalId":22457,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of nutrition and dietetics","volume":"78 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77419227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
