These radars are part of the Australian Coastal Ocean Radar Network which is a facility of the Australian Integrated Marine Observing system. Radial currents are the component of current along the radar look direction which is the measurement obtainable from an individual radar system. The two radars are sited 7km apart and the assumption is made that the radial currents from the two radars should be similar far enough away from these sites. The results, although preliminary, show that there is reasonable agreement at these distances. In addition the radial currents from both radars agree well with ADCP measurements at one of the ADCP sites. There is less agreement at the second ADCP site which is attributed to the more complex topography at that site.","PeriodicalId":224246,"journal":{"name":"2013 MTS/IEEE OCEANS - Bergen","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133544304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The AUV mode is supposed to carry out some of underwater missions which are difficult to be accomplished by ROV mode due to its tether cable. To complete the underwater missions such as inspection and maintenance of complex structures in AUV mode, the vehicle is required to have high level of autonomy including obstacle avoidance, autonomous navigation, and so on. In this paper, we will discuss some of systematic and algorithmic issues in the development of such kind hybrid vehicles. Experimental studies on the development of underwater hybrid inertial navigation system and SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) method in a certain water tank environment are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":224246,"journal":{"name":"2013 MTS/IEEE OCEANS - Bergen","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133683239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The necessity to develop a new topology of connection mechanism arose during an off-shore wreck survey whereby the ROVs were connected by a custom designed hook and ring system. During the trials, despite satisfactory performance of the custom hook, the necessity to develop a new hooking system to facilitate, accelerate and improve safety conditions of the engage and disengage procedure became evident. The interconnecting umbilical cable feed to the daughter ROV's is managed by coiling/uncoiling it around the mother ROV via coordinated motion of the both ROVs. During the coil phase, the umbilical cable is guided into its holding slots by a B shape frame positioned at each corner of the LATIS. The new self-locking mechanism is designed to operate without a power supply or hydraulic drive but instead its geometry and the constituent springs facilitate daughter ROV locking / unlocking with daughter ROV thrusters alone.","PeriodicalId":224246,"journal":{"name":"2013 MTS/IEEE OCEANS - Bergen","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133714697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the next step, we propose visualization of digitized fisheries information in the form of maps, and application of these maps to resource conservation and efficient fishing operations. The collection of various types of information, such as positional information and catch information, from small fishing vessels during operation has become possible due to the promotion of “IT fisheries.” Among the collected information, indicators such as water temperature that fishermen evaluate empirically from readings can be presented effectively using text and graphs. However, analysis results information, such as resource density and fishing rate, can be difficult to evaluate from numbers only, and the use of geographic information system (GIS) is considered to be effective. However, full-scale introduction of GIS is considered difficult in terms of both cost and skill. Therefore, we attempted to develop an iPad application that would allow fishermen to make use of the mapped information without having an awareness of GIS, and to introduce it in sea cucumber dredge net fishing, scallop dredge net fishing, and octopus pot fishing. This report presents the mobile GIS plotter developed for fishermen and some examples of its application.","PeriodicalId":224246,"journal":{"name":"2013 MTS/IEEE OCEANS - Bergen","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130295719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is often processed by a conventional beamforming applied on a number of subarrays partitioning the whole array. The subarrays beams are then adaptively recombined by a second stage of beamforming. On the opposite, subarrays may also be adaptively processed and their beams conventionally, or even adaptively recombined. Several partition schemes are finally available. In this article, a general framework is introduced for those two-steps beamforming. Two basic partitions schemes of a linear array are then considered by forming subarrays of contiguous or interlaced sensors. The pros and the cons of each solution are analyzed in terms of resolution, anti-jamming, noise rejection, and directivity index.","PeriodicalId":224246,"journal":{"name":"2013 MTS/IEEE OCEANS - Bergen","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114274873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper a new idea is proposed and studied to supply deep sea low-consumption devices using low-cost disk piezoelectric elements. These piezoelectric components, together with a horizontal balance-like physical pendulum, create an electrical power generator that harvests the mechanical energy brought by the sea movements, preferably from the heave and pitch motion that sea waves induce in a moored-floating body as might be a buoy. The main purpose of this system is to unrelate the rate of impacts to the piezoelectric material from its natural oscillation frequency, making it viable to harvest energy from a slow motion environment such as the sea. Equations relating the energy extraction are presented and different experimentations are worked out to characterize the piezo elements. Finally a prototype with a proposed electronic harvesting system is built and tested in a real medium, showing the results before concluding the article.","PeriodicalId":224246,"journal":{"name":"2013 MTS/IEEE OCEANS - Bergen","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116088618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

OSS is composed of an underwater sensor network, communication links to computers running ocean models, computer ocean models and a data assimilation tool which adapts the model to measurement data from the sensor network. The paper describes the overall system and how the sensor measurements are updating the model. The inclusion of electromagnetic communication in the sensor network is discussed, illustrating the link sea surface range and performance in terms of signal level variations. Results from real measurements at the coast of Norway show the improved predictions of sea current behaviour. Besides from improving the quality of predictions, modelling is used for optimum deployment of the network nodes, representing a major economical benefit of the OSS approach compared to a more ad hoc deployment of the nodes.","PeriodicalId":224246,"journal":{"name":"2013 MTS/IEEE OCEANS - Bergen","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123247121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These cause colour changes which can be variant on factors such as the constituents within the water, sunlight/weather changes and distance to the object of interest. It is desirable to correct for the water's influence so as to recover a true reflectance/colour of the imaged scene. This is necessary in the application of benthic mapping where producing inter- and intra-site colour consistent images is important for classification and characterisation of these habitats. We present a new method which involves sensing the incoming irradiance to the scene from two locations above and below the water and colour correcting the image. The light is sensed in the hyperspectral domain, leading to other uses in the examination of the water column. In this paper we present colour correction in the trichromatic domain but this is equally applicable in the hyperspectral domain.","PeriodicalId":224246,"journal":{"name":"2013 MTS/IEEE OCEANS - Bergen","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124962702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
