Dietrich","doi":"10.2495/sc190071","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2495/sc190071","url":null,"abstract":"Walkability in cities is assessed in general at the neighbourhood scale (street grids and their connectivity, etc.) as well as at the street scale (width of sidewalks, existence of benches, etc.). The process of walking along a street canyon itself is hardly included in such investigations. This paper wants to contribute to the question of which physical conditions create a positive impression to make a street canyon attractive to walk along. The eye delivers a sharp vision only in the range of 2° (the fovea). To generate a sharp image of the whole field of view, the eye scans it with quick movements (saccades) of mostly 4 to 15° from one point of foveal view to the next one, and the brain completes the intermediate ranges to the final impression. The perception of what we see is facilitated if distinct objects are offered there, where saccades want to scan. In that case the saccades run smoothly creating the feeling that it is a pleasure to watch what is in the field of view, the object is perceived as interesting and diverse. This paper shows a series of figures where the pattern of a sequence of saccades is included in the view along typical street canyons. Because of the grazing angle of incidence of view on distant façades, three-dimensional modulated façades and their upper building lines attract saccades much better than two-dimensional modulated ones. Similarly, a linear upper building line hardly delivers attractions for the saccades, while a three-dimensional modulated one does it well. This paper includes recommendations for the size of three-dimensional objects to range from 0.5 up to 3 m for different distances.","PeriodicalId":224230,"journal":{"name":"The Sustainable City XIII","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127332800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Urban management and development face many challenges in the continuous creation of new jobs and prosperity without harming the environment and resources. Most cities in Croatia, especially in the coastal areas, are recognized as tourism destinations: tourism is the most important economic activity. The aim of this paper is to investigate, based on secondary available data, whether having tourism as a generator of the city’s overall development is sufficient to make it an attractive place to live. In these times of intensive economic, sociological and cultural changes, tourism destination management needs to recognize and to define a suitable and feasible model, methodology and the means of implementing urban destination development strategy. The mere notion of a tourism destination implies the integral management of all key stakeholders. Faced with negative demographic processes, the underdevelopment of the urban settlements network, with its function and economy, we conclude that national policies need to give special attention to those urban areas that lag behind the national average. Based on that analysis and the conclusions drawn from it, our paper suggests a model of a sustainable transitional city that is economically independent, and which is an attractive place not only for visiting tourists, but also for its residents throughout the year.","PeriodicalId":224230,"journal":{"name":"The Sustainable City XIII","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133704563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To raise environmental awareness, World Environment Day has been celebrated on 5 June since 1974, and while the concept of a “green city” has started to gain momentum in India, high population density and land scarcity has forced people to settle near ecologically sensitive areas within conventional development models, which has led to the rapid deterioration of resources. The crucial starting point for this paper is to find out whether the knowledge of the “green city” has had deeper penetration to all sectors of the population. The main objective is to evaluate the extent to which individuals and local governance are involved in the “green city” movement. Our research investigates whether we have responsive and inclusive government institutions with the capacity to deliver services efficiently and equitably. The author has taken Perungudi, which is one of the fastest growing suburbs in Chennai city due to a rapidly growing IT industry, as a case study. This research first divides the Perungudi area into two districts based on the socio-economic status and then investigates local people’s knowledge and perception of the “green city” based on the following tools: (i) a household survey; (ii) secondary reports; and (iii) a transect walk. The results underline how much work lies ahead for “green city” advocates: revealing the gaps in our knowledge about public attitudes towards the “green city” concept.","PeriodicalId":224230,"journal":{"name":"The Sustainable City XIII","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126386063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
