It has the capability to be used as a real time monitor in a harsh and turbulent environment. LIBS has been tested at the Diagnostic Instrumentation and Analysis Laboratory's (DIAL) combustion facility to optimize and characterize the LIBS operation in a flame. Three metals, Cu, Fe, and Ca, were injected into the combustor with a peristaltic pump. LIBS spectra were recorded at different delay times with a fixed gate width to determine the best detection gate. LIBS signal in the flame were also compared with the direct emission from the flame. It is found that the LIBS signal is stronger than the signal from the direct emission of the metal in the same flame and the LIBS method has a much better signal over background ratio. To test the calibration scheme, metal solutions were injected into the combustor with different rates. Linear calibration curves were obtained.","PeriodicalId":224191,"journal":{"name":"Collection of Technical Papers. 35th Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference and Exhibit (IECEC) (Cat. The active rectifier converts the AC voltage into a regulated DC voltage, and draws input sinusoidal current at near unity power factor. In addition, the output inverter generates a variable frequency PWM synthesised voltage waveform to drive a permanent magnet brushless DC motor at near unity power factor for maximum efficiency. The high efficiency motor drive requires a small passive EMI filter and lower power rating requirements for the electronics switching devices. Therefore, the new DSP-based motor drive can be packaged into a smaller and lighter unit.","PeriodicalId":224191,"journal":{"name":"Collection of Technical Papers. 35th Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference and Exhibit (IECEC) (Cat. The technology provides a new dimension for engineers and designers to manage the power and energy used in electronic products. The batteries will not have to be oversized to accommodate a peak power demand. A combination of battery and ultracapacitor (hybrid power system) can improve the battery capability for power peak and also extend battery lifetime. In this paper, the author presents an ultra-thin hydra-amorphous ruthenium oxide ultracapacitor. The unique electrochemical characteristics of ultracapacitor are able to provide a much higher pulse current capability over the battery system. The ultracapacitor with 0.1 cm thick, 14 cm/sup 2/ size, and 2.6 g weight has the capability to deliver over 30 W pulse peak. By combination of ultracapacitor and battery, the pulse performance of traditional alkaline primary battery can be significantly improved.","PeriodicalId":224191,"journal":{"name":"Collection of Technical Papers. 35th Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference and Exhibit (IECEC) (Cat. Previous studies considering arrays with near-term thin-film technology for Earth orbiting applications are briefly reviewed. The present study uses a parametric approach that evaluated the performance of lightweight thin-film arrays with cell efficiencies ranging from 5% to 20%. The model developed for this study is described in some detail. Similar mass and cost trends for each array option were found across eight missions of various power levels in locations ranging from Venus to Jupiter. The paper concludes with the observation that with the characteristics assumed for this study, ultra-lightweight arrays using efficient, thin-film cells on flexible substrates may become a leading alternative for a wide variety of space missions.","PeriodicalId":224191,"journal":{"name":"Collection of Technical Papers. 35th Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference and Exhibit (IECEC) (Cat. However, the definition of the reference system is problematic, since the environment is not in equilibrium. If a nonequilibrium system is chosen, parts of the environment possess exergy in respect to one another. On the other hand, an environment that is in equilibrium precludes the presence of energy sources and deposit of raw materials, and thus prevents the occurrence of those processes whose effectiveness one is examining. No reference state exists, which satisfies the two requirements to the same extent. The aim of this paper is firstly an examination of the conditions that the classical definition of exergy mandates: the system must be in a state of internal unrestricted equilibrium and the environment must be in state of internal unrestricted equilibrium, which does not change during time. Then, the possible choices of an exergy reference state for chemically reacting systems on the basis of the recent literature are critically examined. Subsequently, some remarks are made on the most suitable formulation of exergy efficiency for these systems.","PeriodicalId":224191,"journal":{"name":"Collection of Technical Papers. 35th Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference and Exhibit (IECEC) (Cat. In general, two work exchangers (turbine and pump or compressor) are present. Nevertheless, since the presence of two work exchangers is not a consequence of the two laws of thermodynamics, one must not be surprised that in some cases it is possible to obtain work in a continuous process with only one work exchanger. A new pressure generator for a heat engine, which has been recently proposed, is one of these cases. The device works on the basis of the thermal transport of gas according to the \"Knudsen effect\".","PeriodicalId":224191,"journal":{"name":"Collection of Technical Papers. 35th Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference and Exhibit (IECEC) (Cat. To evaluate the impact of a refractive secondary concentrator on the overall efficiency of the optical system, the optical efficiency of an acrylic refractive secondary concentrator prototype was evaluated on an optics bench. Light from a laser was allowed to enter the refractive secondary concentrator from a variety of positions, and an integrating sphere was used to collect the exiting light. Energy output of the refractive secondary concentrator was compared to energy input. Several mathematical models were used to describe potential flux distributions impinging on the front surface of the refractive secondary concentrator. For uniform illumination, the optical throughput was found to be 0.874. Different flux profiles resulted in optical throughputs in the range of 0.857 to 0.889. An antireflective coating added to the refractive secondary concentrator should increase optical throughput further.","PeriodicalId":224191,"journal":{"name":"Collection of Technical Papers. 35th Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference and Exhibit (IECEC) (Cat.
