This research aimed to investigate the flavonoid content of seven Scutellaria species from the center, southwest, and west of Iran. Via thin layer and column chromatography, the flavonoid was extracted from leaves and then purified. To screen the flavonoid compositions, a chromatographic method was applied by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC/TQMS/MS). Fingerprint analysis was implemented so as to characterize a total of 73 chemical compounds, from which 71 compounds were flavonoids belonging to different classes. Flavone with 37 derivatives possessed major values. The most abundant flavonoid compounds were observed in S. multicaulis (23 compounds) and S. patonii (22 compounds). Flavonoid composition, including apigenin, kaempferol, quercetin, and hydroxylflavones represented remarkable derivatives. A total of 45 flavonoids, one tannin and one anthraquinone compound, were observed to be primarily separated and identified for Scutellaria species. Moreover, six categorized chemical groups were identified in this genus and proposed as chemical barcodes. The specific chemical groups strongly provided the boundaries of Scutellaria species, the pharmacological value enhancement, breeding programs, and comprehensive documents of the species. According to the results, LC/TQMS/MS was proven a dominant method regarding genus Scutellaria. \u0000Keywords:chemical groups; flavone; liquid chromatography; Scutellaria multicaulis; Scutellarioideae","PeriodicalId":224123,"journal":{"name":"Acta Biologica Cracoviensia s. The aim of this study was to investigate for the first time morpho-anatomical leaf traits of these species in the studied populations and to identify traits that follow a specific trend along the gradients of climate factors. Leaf traits that discriminate Vaccinium species were as follows: depth of the adaxial cuticule (AdC), thickness of the palisade tissue (PT), thickness of the spongy tissue (ST), height of the abaxial epidermal cells (AbE), height of the abaxial cuticule (AbC) and leaf thickness (LT). Populations of V. myrtillus were characterized by the smallest, and populations of V. vitis-idaea by the highest values for AdC, PT, ST, AbE and LT. Additionally, AbC was significantly larger for V. uliginosum in comparison to two other species. On the basis of morpho-anatomical traits, intraspecific variability of the studied species was explored by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Cluster Analysis (CA) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). CA based on 10 morpho-anatomical traits showed that populations of V. myrtillus and V. uliginosum that grew at lower altitudes (characterized by higher mean annual temperature) are more similar to each other. Especially V. myrtillus was responsive to the elevational gradient and exhibited the highest plasticity in morpho-anatomical leaf traits. Populations of V. vitis-idaea had a different pattern of differentiation along the elevational gradient. CA showed that the populations at the lowest and at the highest altitudes were more similar according to the morpho-anatomical leaf traits, meaning that evergreen leaves were more resistant to environmental conditions.","PeriodicalId":224123,"journal":{"name":"Acta Biologica Cracoviensia s. The ability to maintain cellular ion homeostasis is of importance to help the plant survive under salt stress. Salt overly sensitive 1 (SOS1), a plasma membrane Na+/H+ antiporter, has been proven to play critical roles in Na+ exclusion out of the cell, hence contributing to salt tolerance in plants. In this study, we analyzed the natural nucleotide polymorphisms occuring within the entire coding sequence as well as the upstream region of the OsSOS1 gene by comparing the sequences of two contrasting rice genotypes, namely, Nipponbare (salt-sensitive) and Pokkali (salt-resistant). In total, six nucleotide polymorphisms were identified in the coding sequence, and 44 nucleotide substitutions, 225-bp-insertion and 65-bp-deletion were observed in the upstream region of the OsSOS1 gene. Futher in silico analysis revealed that two out of six nucleotide polymorphisms in the coding sequence were non-synonymous (A1600G, G2204A) which led to two amino acid substitutions (T534A, S735N, respectively) positioned in the C-terminal domain of OsSOS1 transporter, but caused no effect on protein properties. In the upstream region of OsSOS1 gene, 44 single nucleotide polymorphisms and two INDELs were identified, in which nucleotide substitutions at position -1392, -1389, -822, -583, +57 and an insertion at position -1035 caused change in cis-regulatory elements. Analysis of OsSOS1 expression revealed that salt induced the expression of the gene in the roots, but not in the leaves in both investigated rice cultivars.","PeriodicalId":224123,"journal":{"name":"Acta Biologica Cracoviensia s.
