The effects of harmonics are well known: customers could experience major production losses due to the loss of supply, for example; on the other hand, harmonic load currents cause the utility to supply a higher real energy input then the actual real power needed to maintain a plant's production at a certain level. The utility carries the extra transmission I2 R losses due to the harmonic currents. Consequently, the installed power system capacity is higher then required for a comparable linear load. Traditional energy rates do not take into account these extra costs. A tariff system may be one solution to regulate the total harmonic pollution in a power system. Different tariff strategies are evaluated and it is shown that they can allocate the increased costs more fairly than current rate structures","PeriodicalId":224116,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE Africon. 7th Africon Conference in Africa (IEEE Cat. The impact of packet loss on perceived voice quality depends on several factors, including loss pattern, codec type and packet size. Many techniques have been developed to recover lost packets. A newly developed recovery technique, \"switched recovery technique\" (SRT), employs a suitable recovery technique from known techniques to estimate the lost packet content (silence/voiced/unvoiced), depending on the preceding and following packets that were received correctly. The proposed technique was tested with different codecs, such as LD-CELP, LPC-10, and variable rate coders. The use of remote monitoring system to overcome the problem using powerline communication has been identified as a solution. This needs tampering detection and transceiver capable of communicating data through powerline channel. We have identify different kinds of tampering and present simulated results of tampering detection and BPSK (DSSS) transceiver design for energy metering as a solution to the problem. The choice of spread spectrum BPSK modulation scheme is based on its robustness and its ability to spread signal into wide band to protect jamming and interference. The assumption is that the company is the local subsidiary of an overseas telecommunications manufacturer. The example to be used is the introduction of the future UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) technology. The introduction of such a technology involves a major effort due to the complexity of such a system, the large number of tasks that are performed by the local company for such networks and the subsequent technology enabling required by the local company. Technology management principles are the foundation for managing complex technologies within a company. Simulation results show that the performance measure can be used effectively to predict the potential of a source for compression. Long term meteorological radiosonde data from eight stations were used for this purpose. In this paper, the model is used to predict the cumulative effective earth radius, or k-factor, distribution for different months as a function of height. The SiD process is first done by training the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) classifier using parameterised feature sets (PFS) to form speaker models. During testing, the likelihood of a talker, given a set of speaker models is measured. The performance of the SiD system is normally degraded as the population of speakers increases. This paper addresses this problem by using linear prediction cepstral coefficients (LPCC) to complement the errors obtained from the PFS and the final identification is performed on smaller population.
