The challenges of underwater acoustic communication result in very low data throughput. While there are several examples of scientific data, even imagery, being successfully transmitted over high rate acoustic links, channel coding methods with high rates of error-correction are often employed that limit data throughput to tens or a few hundred bits per second. Little research exists into appropriate methods for image and data compression for acoustic links at these very low rates. We recently have experienced great success using compression techniques based upon the Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) embedded coding method, and feel they are particularly suited to underwater data in a number of ways. In particular, SPIHT provides a fully embedded coding method; truncating the encoded bitstream at any point produces the optimal encoding for that data length. This allows fine-resolution imagery to build on previously transmitted low-resolution thumbnails. For time-series data, we have developed a method for quantizing data to emphasize more important sections, such as the most recently collected data. In this paper we describe how these methods can be applied to compress scalar environmental data and imagery for communication over acoustic links. We also the present initial results of sea trials performed near Rota in the Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Islands, during which images were captured, compressed and transmitted in-situ.","PeriodicalId":223476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126544706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper considers the challenges faced in localizing robots using reference-based localization in such clutter-prone environments. Clutter affects localization in two ways: it blocks reference communication signals, effectively preventing them from reaching the more remote regions in the tanks, and, second, it leads to the formation of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) distance measurements. In this paper, we consider the application of distributed localization techniques to cluttered environments and assess their performance. We also investigate how to place robots in a multi-hop network to improve the accuracy of position estimation in the far-fetched regions of the tank, when distributed localization is used.","PeriodicalId":223476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131480568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A sensor placed on the mussel detects the mussel's rhythmic opening and closing, or gape. Changes in the gape can indicate changes in the mussel's environment. We plan to attach gape sensors, microcontrollers, and radios to mussels and place them back in their natural environment. Small, inexpensive radios operating in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands will provide the physical link of an underwater wireless sensor network (WSN). Despite the attenuation radio waves experience in water, the low cost of these radios should allow us to deploy enough to set up a reliable communications network. While commercially available radios can be used underwater with waterproofing, antennas designed for use in air are unsuitable for use in water, because of the different electromagnetic properties of water and air. We designed dipole, loop, and folded dipole antennas for use in water and attached these to transmitters. We measured the power transmitted by the antennas by immersing the transmitters in a tank of water and measuring the received power at different distances using a small dipole antenna attached to a spectrum analyzer. The distance between the antennas was precisely controlled with a motorized xy positioner.","PeriodicalId":223476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127831536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The delay spread can be several hundreds of milliseconds, which covers several blocks of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions, leading to severe inter-block-interference (IBI). There are usually two significant well-separated clusters, one from direct paths and the other from surface reflections. Viewing the signals arrived along the two clusters as from two virtual users, we develop a multiuser based OFDM receiver to address IBI, where both channel estimation and data detection algorithms are presented. This receiver can effectively combine signals from multiple senors with different delay spread structures, where each block is decoded in the presence of interference from multiple different blocks. Experimental data from the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) environment are used to validate the performance of the proposed receiver.","PeriodicalId":223476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130835470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hierarchical architecture is motivated by the property of the acoustic underwater transmission medium that for each transmission distance there exists an operating frequency for which the narrowband signal-to-noise ratio is maximized. The sensors and collector stations are consequently allocated different operating frequencies. We assume a uniform distribution of both sensors and collector stations over the finite area of the sensing field. The node-to-node channel is modeled using frequency dependent path loss and Ricean fading. We adopt a communication theoretic approach and study the interdependence of the sustainable number of hops through the network, end-to-end frame error probability, power and bandwidth allocation. The analysis is performed under the assumption that there is interference from other nodes within the same layer of the hierarchy. We present numerical examples that illustrate the network performance and demonstrate that there are preferred operating frequencies which ensure network operation without any cross-interference between the collector network and the sensor network.","PeriodicalId":223476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131909497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as underwater acoustic channels pose multiple difficulties such as multipath, time-space selectivity, frequency dependent noise, and Doppler shifts on transmission, currently there is not a single modulation strategy that can provide high data rate, energy efficiency and channel robustness simultaneously. Enlightened by the similar dual mode (DM) systems developed in wireless channels, this paper presents the R&D of a DM UWA modem testbed system, which enables the switch between DSSS and OFDM scheme to accommodate different channel situations. Experimental results obtained in a physical shallow water channel demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.","PeriodicalId":223476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133825632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this conclusion could not be applied to underwater acoustic networks (UANs) due to the significant differences between propagation environment of RFNs and that of UANs. Using sonar equation and with the Thorp's water absorption formula, this paper analyzes the capacity of CDMA, TDMA and FDMA schemes in a cluster type underwater acoustic network. These traces are used to model the performance of capacity-achieving code ensembles as employed in an Incremental Redundancy (IR) Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) error control scheme. We apply a code-matched channel state quantization technique aimed at representing channel evolution over time with low quantization error; the evolution of the channel among the quantized states is then represented using a Markov model, over which we base the analytical evaluation of IR-HARQ performance. Results confirm that IR-HARQ consistently improves link performance with respect to Type I HARQ. In addition, we observe that the different channel statistics due to different transmitter and receiver placements, as well as to the acoustic propagation conditions considered in our scenario, have an impact on HARQ performance. This impact is correctly captured by our Markov model, suggesting good adherence of the model to actual channel behaviors. The validation of the models (by simulating over different traces than those used to train the models) suggests that they are robust to moderate non-stationarity, making them good candidates to give a compact representation of the channel behavior, e.g., in network simulators.","PeriodicalId":223476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133216297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since communications is done at relatively high frequencies, as compared with frequencies emitted by underwater vehicles, these higher frequencies are attenuated more rapidly by the medium. Therefore, at a minimum, sensors must be deployed within communications range of each other. Unfortunately, human or mechanical error and physical aspects of the medium may lead to sensors being deployed imprecisely, causing a lack of connectivity between sensors. To mitigate such situations, this paper proposes a stochastic approach, the Effective Communications Range Calculator, for determining an effective communications range with which to design underwater sensor fields to meet the connectivity specifications of the field designer.","PeriodicalId":223476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126533589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
