Using data from interviews with student participants in two of the three humanities electives, this presentation will examine the particular activities and experiences that students identify as contributing to improved communication, and review strategies that can be integrated into more traditional communication courses in the engineering curriculum.","PeriodicalId":222814,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"132 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133804578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, many of these strategies are designed for semester-long courses, in which a communication expert teaches fewer than 30 students. This extended abstract describes a study in which we test a different strategy for effectively teaching presentations to large numbers of engineering and science students in a relatively short time. Because the strategy calls for students to use the assertion-evidence approach, as opposed to the common topic-subtopic practice, the strategy is challenging. In our study, we are testing the strategy in four large student populations in workshops ranging from two days to one week.","PeriodicalId":222814,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134497829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, recent studies found that more projects fail to achieve their funding goals than succeed. This paper reports on a pilot study that investigates what makes certain campaigns successful. In particular, the study investigates how successful pitches are written differently from failed ones in terms of their rhetorical strategies. Preliminary results suggest that successful pitches are often written for a specialized expert community that include technical details, while failed pitches tend to focus on values of their project targeting a general audience in mind.","PeriodicalId":222814,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130282071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This manuscript addresses that gap by outlining how UX can contribute to entrepreneurship education and training. UX is particularly useful for the growing class of “user entrepreneurs,” who innovate solutions to problems they encounter while using existing technologies. Through UX training, more users can progress along a continuum from a general user who innovates for personal use to an entrepreneur who commercializes solutions to user-problems. Furthermore, UX research can actually spur innovation by revealing user experience problems that demand new solutions.","PeriodicalId":222814,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128884869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some models are discussed and the possibilities of an ecological model are highlighted. This study examined how active users grouped social media platforms. 59 respondents completed an open card sort activity where they categorized 19 social media applications according to their own preferences. Data was also collected on frequency of use of Social Media Platforms as well as perceived use in comparison with peers. Using a series of decision rules, 44 standardized categories were defined. A similarity matrix and dendogram are presented that show strong and weak associations between platforms. A post-session survey provided an opportunity for participants to comment on their organizational preferences and from this user-perceived were themes identified. A discourse analysis of six responses is presented to highlight how specific participants developed their sorting strategies. These methodologies may provide the rich data needed to further develop ecological-type models for classifying social media use and perception.","PeriodicalId":222814,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114407200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We began to meet weekly to see if we could determine a systematic approach and soon identified four voices that contribute to personal communication: poet, storyteller, scientist and analyst. We seek to synthesize these voices in an ongoing process focused on journal writing. While journal-writing itself is not novel, we feel our approach is new in its combination of practice, theory and discovery or personal voice. After three years, this work-in-progress will discuss what we have discovered so far and our plans for turning our discoveries into a systematic and creative course in communication.","PeriodicalId":222814,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124804056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In brief, all effective, interesting texts are organized around some kind of question with a genuinely doubtful answer that provokes inquiry: Readers feel compelled to read an entire text or listen intently to a presentation because a question posed to readers or listeners genuinely provokes them to seek an answer. In this view, new products or services will work, and entrepreneurship communication will work, not just because what's provided is new, emotionally appealing, or technically clever but rather because both the product/service and the information provided about it will evoke and then settle real and living doubt.","PeriodicalId":222814,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124980108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though usability has long been dominated by human centered needs, non-human agents interact with digital content as well. This paper includes strategies to strengthen our pedagogy around non-human centric writing in a way that both assists technology in its job and strengthens the applicability of content for the human users that interact with it.
