Despite all the public health interventions, the effectiveness of the use of emergency contraceptives (ECs) to avert unintended pregnancies is still low in Ghana. Little is known about the knowledge, attitude, and barriers to ECs utilization in Ghana. Therefore, the objective of the study was to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to the utilization of ECs among female students of the University for Development Studies, Tamale. A total of 309 female students of reproductive age were selected using a simple random approach. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used for the study. Also, a semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data on knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to the utilization of ECs. Frequency and percentage distribution of the sociodemographic factors, and behavioral and attitude variables of EC variables were computed using the SPSS software (version 20). Overall, the majority (65.0%) of the participants showed sufficient knowledge of ECs. Also, 54.0% of the respondents had a good attitude toward EC. An assessment of the reasons for not using any form of ECs revealed that some of them wanted pregnancy (26.6%), lacked knowledge about ECs (18.1%), and partner refusal (4.3%). Also, religious beliefs (37.2%) were barriers to the utilization of ECs. In conclusion, the study found a high level of knowledge and a good attitude toward ECs among the study participants. However, partner refusal and religious beliefs were mentioned as barriers to the utilization of ECs. Therefore, we recommend that the health authorities in charge of reproductive health education should liaise with religious leaders as they could partner in the creation of awareness of EC. \u0000 \u0000Keywords: Emergency Contraceptive, Knowledge, Attitude, Barriers, utilization.

It is indicated that poor remuneration, non-conducive working environments and poorly resourced healthcare facilities influence job satisfaction and affect quality healthcare delivery. In this study, the relationship between socio-demographic variables and job satisfaction were examined. An analytical cross-sectional design and a multistage sampling technique were employed and the Mueller/McCloskey Nurse Job Satisfaction Scale was adapted and used to carry out interviews among 156 nurses and midwives in the Bole District of the Savannah Region. Spearman’s correlational analysis was done at 95% confidence level (p 0.05); marital status (r=-0.120, p=0.137> 0.05); level of education (r=0.055, p=0.576>0.05); working experience (r=0.135, p=0.094) and job satisfaction. Job type by healthcare profession was the only socio-demographic variable that predicted job satisfaction. Whilst the midwives were more likely to be dissatisfied, the nurses were more likely to be satisfied. It is recommended that nursing leaders and policy makers should institute motivational packages in consonance with the job types of these health professionals and respecting their rights to be involved in decision making and creating fair promotion opportunities. \u0000Keywords: Nurse, Midwife, Job Satisfaction, Socio-demographic Factors, Bole District. \u0000 \u0000

Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) aims to remove financial hardships associated with seeking healthcare. However, there are concerns that vulnerable sections of the population still face healthcare-related financial hardships. This paper examines the impoverishing effects of OOP healthcare payments and the determinants of impoverishment due to OOP healthcare payments among migrant adolescent female head porters aged 10-19 years in Ghana. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was administered to a sample of 336 respondents who reported ill and sought healthcare within the last 12 months, January-December 2015, prior to the survey in 2016. Impoverishment due to OOP payment was assessed by computing the net income after payment for health care using the World Bank’s poverty line of income of $1.90 a day converted to 2015 purchasing power parity (PPP) equivalence for Ghana. The results illustrate that poverty incidence increased from 23 percent before OOP payment to 76 percent post OOP payment for healthcare. In a multivariate analysis, primary education [AOR=0.32, 95%CI=0.15-0.68]; Mamprusi (AOR=0.41, 95%CI=0.19-0.87) and other ethnic groups [AOR=0.33, 95%CI=0.14-0.75] compared to Dagomba; >1year in head portage (AOR=0.46; 0.23 - 0.95); drug store (AOR=0.43, 95%CI=0.19 - 0.96) and home treatment [AOR=0.20, 95%CI=0.05-0.85] were significantly associated with lower odds, whilst never registering for (AOR=4.05; 95%=1.82 - 9.03) or no valid NHIS card (2.29; 95%CI=1.08 - 4.83), Kumasi city [AOR=5.14; 95% CI:2.45-10.77] and severity of illness[AOR=2.86, CI 1.49-5.45] were associated with higher odds, of impoverishment due to OOP payment.. We recommend that the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Health should collaborate to enrol adolescent female head porters onto the NHIS in order to increase their financial risk protection. Government should also put in place policy interventions including skills training and livelihood programmes to increase income levels, and improve the poverty situation of adolescent girl head porters. \u0000 \u0000Key Words: Impoverishment, out-of-pocket healthcare payments, adolescent girls, migrants, Ghana

The objective of the study was to assess the indigenous conservation methods and practices for some selected crop genetic resources (CGRs) in the Kassena-Nankana and Bolgatanga areas of Ghana. Data was gathered with the aid of a questionnaire, secondary data and first-hand observations. The primary subject for the study were farmers. The study communities were selected by convenient sampling and based on key informants’ information. Two hundred farmers from ten communities each from Kassena-Nankana and Bolgatanga municipalities served as subjects in this study. The results revealed that, farmer’s choice of CGRs for cultivation was based on food preference, marketability, and early maturing crops among others. Maize, millet, rice and groundnut were the most cultivated crops in the two study areas making up 15-25%. In both areas, 52-65% of the farmers were males and 35-48% females. Use of preserved seeds as planting materials was practiced by 41-49% of farmers, 21-26% purchased their planting materials and 21-23% practiced a combination of the two. The indigenous conservation practices were pot preservation, bunch hanging, bottle preservation, sack preservation and local silos/barns. Methods employed to achieve CGRs conservation included the use of ashes from burnt plant residue and plant parts and plant extracts. The findings of the study revealed that some indigenous practices are moderately practiced by the farmers in the surveyed areas to ensure CGRs conservation and food security. \u0000 \u0000Keywords: Conservation practices, Crop, Genetic resources, Farmers, Indigenous, Ghana \u0000

This paper examines the moderating role of teachers’ EQ in their Job Satisfaction (JS) and Turnover Intention (ToI) relationship in the Tamale Metropolis of the Northern Region of Ghana. The proposed model was evaluated based on valid data from 116 teachers obtained from a cross-sectional survey. To confirm whether EQ will moderate the JS and ToI relationship, a process macro (Hayes, 2018 v. 3.4) was run with mean cantering and 5000 bootstrapping. Regression Analysis was employed to determine the relationships proposed in the study. The results show a significant but inverse relationship between JS and ToI of teachers in the Metropolis. However, the EQ moderator function in JS and the ToI relationship was not support-ed. It was also found that the Teachers’ EQ had no significant effect on their ToI in the Metropolis. Empirically, the study extends our understanding of the constructs discussed. The paper also dis-cusses some managerial implications, and because there were some contextual limitations, direc-tions are also provided for future studies.

However, the knowledge base of traditional African vegetable production remains local due to a lack of research and policy support. Therefore, the adoption of improved technology among traditional vegetable farmers is generally low and impedes efforts to promote widespread cultivation, consumption and even commercialisation. This study aims at clarifying potential factors that determine the adoption of technologies by traditional African vegetable farmers in the northern region of Ghana. One hundred and five (105) respondents in five communities and across two administrative districts in the northern region were selected for an in-depth survey using a combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. In addition, a logit regression was used to determine the effect of various factors on technology adoption by farmers. Among the factors, the educational level of a farmer, access to credit, farm size, experience in farming and access to extension support were found to be important factors affecting the decision of traditional African vegetable farmers to adopt improved technology. The results of this study can help enhance the effectiveness of policy re-orientation towards a more effective commercialisation of traditional African vegetables in Ghana and elsewhere.

A cross-sectional survey approach was applied in the study. The sample size was 150 respondents (75 male and 75 female) for the questionnaire. A mixed method approach involving questionnaires, key informant interviews and focus group discussions were the main instruments used for data collection. The data was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The questionnaire was answered by 150 respondents, 72 respondents answered the focus group questions while eight (8) respondents answered the key informant interview questions. The schools, parents/guardians of children with disabilities, foster homes and NGOs that support the education of children with disabilities were visited for the questionnaire administration. The study realized children with disabilities face discrimination and marginalization in accessing education in the district. Thus, some NGOs support the education of children with disabilities by recruiting and sending them to school as well as providing teaching and learning materials, feeding the disabled children, capacity building as well as caring and showing love for the disabled children. The challenges militating against children with disabilities in their bid to access education were: lack of special educational infrastructure; stigmatization by school mates, teachers and parents; and their inability to move from home to school and back. The study concludes that children with disabilities have the desire to be educated. The study recommends the provision of a disabled children school in the district. Government should formulate legislations against stigmatization and discrimination of disabled children.

The small and micro-scale engineering enterprises since their inception, have been contributing towards the development of the country. This is particularly so in the manufacturing and engineering sectors where local tools, equipment and machinery are produced and serviced. The Sunyani magazine has become an emerging informal industrial zone where technical skills development is offered to individuals across different areas of engineering. This paper examined the nature of apprenticeship skills development and the associated challenges in an informal industrial zone through a cross-sectional survey. The findings suggest that on-the-job training model without pre- or post-training exams or test characterised the training of apprentices. During the skills development process of the apprentices, the master craftsmen examine the progress of the apprentices to ensure they are progressing and to determine when apprentices have acquired the needed skills to be considered certified. Despite the benefits offered to the local economy, lack of funding for new ventures, lack of government support, tools and equipment constrain the capacity of the informal industrial zone to scale-up its training capacity with the potential of being of greater benefits to the socioeconomic development of the country.
