Our scheme consists of two key components: a content discovery (lookup) service and a routing protocol for message delivery. Both components rely on three key social metrics: centrality, social level, and social tie. Centrality guides the placement of the content lookup service. Social level guides the forwarding of content requests to a content lookup service node. Social tie is exploited to deliver content requests to the content provider, and content data to the requester node. We leverage bounded random walks to estimate a node's centrality. The X-means clustering algorithm is used to compute a node's social level. Lastly, a node's social tie is computed based on the frequency and recency of node contacts. Extensive real-trace-driven simulation results show that our scheme requires less control overhead while maintaining comparable performance for content retrieval applications.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129638937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In applications where the MSs are humans, animals, or transportation systems, the mobility of the MS is often random and unpredictable, implying the necessity of novel and specific algorithms able to deal with large uncertainty on the MS mobility. In this paper, we define the yet unsolved problem of optimizing the lifetime of a WSN in the presence of uncontrollable and random sink mobility with QoS constraints. Then, we present a novel Swarm-Intelligence-based Sensor Selection Algorithm (SISSA), which optimizes network lifetime and meets pre-defined QoS constraints. Next, we mathematically analyze SISSA and derive analytical bounds on energy consumption, number of messages exchanged, and convergence time. The efficiency of SISSA and the accuracy of the model are experimentally evaluated with a testbed composed by 40 sensors, and the network lifetime provided by SISSA is compared to that by an ideal scheme. Experimental and analytical results conclude that SISSA is highly scalable and energy-efficient, and provides on the average the 56% of the lifetime provided by the ideal scheme in all the considered network parameter sets.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128981930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a network flooding protocol, Ripple, which also exploits CI while improving Glossy in terms of throughput and energy efficiency by a factor of three each. To this end, we propose to pipeline transmissions on multiple channels. Ripple uses a novel packet-based channel assignment to eliminate the time overhead occurring in traditional node-based channel assignment procedures. Moreover, if we apply the Reed-Solomon (RS) erasure code to Ripple, it pushes the reliability close to 100%, surpassing Glossy, being nonetheless computationally practical for TelosB motes. Still, the throughput after error coding doubles, or even triples that of the state-of-the-art reliable data dissemination protocol Splash. By tuning the transmission interval, Ripple balances between high throughput and high reliability, thus suiting an array of network broadcast applications with various QoS requirements.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"88 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120966236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such environments, routing is a challenge as the limited resources (like memory and contact opportunities) must be efficiently used and shared between the sessions (or users, contents). To handle several unicast sessions, Inter-Session Network Coding (ISNC) has been proven necessary for optimal throughput in general networks, but is a delicate problem as it can quickly get detrimental. This paper investigates empirically whether ISNC can be beneficial in DTMSNs. We first show that on a simple chain topology, without or with a hub node, no gain can be generally obtained when contacts are bidirectional. We then show that if non-directionality impedes ISNC gain, it can be due to greedy replication, and on the same DTMSN operated with a social-aware routing algorithm, the set of chosen routes turns ISNC into beneficial. On a butterfly topology, we investigate the impact, on ISNC gain, of key network parameters such as buffer management, copy (memory) budget and network load. This allows to determine what parameters to take into account when designing a decentralized ISNC criterion for general topologies.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123078018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, an increasing number of drivers have their smartphone in their vehicle while driving. These phones are equipped with powerful sensing, processing, and communication capabilities. This provides an opportunity to deploy smartphones in modern telematics and mobile telemetry technologies to enable the collection of driving data. Such data can be exploited to obtain insights regarding the vehicle driving patterns as well as the drivers' skills. These insights are valuable in many applications including the usage-based insurance, young driver coaching, and fleet management solutions. However, the sensory data provided by a smartphone must be reoriented with respect to the vehicle to be utilized in such applications. This requires the orientation of the smartphone relative to the vehicle reference system to be estimated through a calibration process. Furthermore, the orientation of a smartphone can vary at any time during a trip due to extraneous factors such as user interaction. This makes the orientation calibration process a challenging task. This paper describes an opportunistic calibration method that continuously monitors a smartphone orientation and compensates for its variation, as necessary. The proposed method relies on the probabilistic fusion of built-in sensors; in particular, the GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer. The extensive experiments conducted using real-world driving data illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed opportunistic calibration method.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117290053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In cognitive radio systems, secondary users must detect a desired signal in an extremely low SNR environment. In such environments, multiple antenna techniques (space diversity) such as a maximum ratio combining are not effective because an energy of target signal is also extremely weak and it is difficult to acquire the signal synchronization of some received signals. A cyclic autocorrelation function (CAF) is used for traditional cyclostationarity detection based spectrum sensing, and in this paper, the CAFs of the received signals are combined whereas the received signals themselves are combined in general space diversity techniques. In this paper, a CAF SNR is defined using the signal and noise components of the CAF, and we attempt to improve sensing performance to use a different weight for each component of the CAF. The presented results are compared with some conventional results and show that the presented technique can improve the spectrum sensing performance.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131053174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the performance that the users will be provided with is a priori unknown, depending on their specific context (e.g., location, time, operator). Moreover, some interactive applications require a particular QoS to be provided, in order to assure their users QoE, e.g., a conversational voice (VoIP) and video-session requires Round Trip Time (RTT) a no higher than 150 ms. In this paper we report the results from a six-months field study involving 15 users of three Swiss network operators where we quantified their networks QoS and context on a minute basis. We then analyse the duration of time intervals and context in which the users are provided with `VoIP-friendly RTT', thus emulating VoLTE. On average, in daily life environments, a mobile user would be able to use a VoIP for 8 minutes for all operators and would need to wait for 3 minutes in between the calls. These numbers reduce to 2-3 minutes each while user is a highly mobile state; only 20% of the VoIP calls over 3G/4G would be able to last 19 minutes. We discuss the implications for mobile network operators focusing on their intend for the deployment of VoLTE services, implications for users themselves, as well as implications for service providers striving to maximise users interactive mobile applications experience.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128601548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From location-based services to autonomous mobile devices, location is prevalent in a wide range of applications. Localization methods for a mobile node vary from using GPS to localizing with respect to beacons with known locations, or using sensors like accelerometers and compasses. All of these solutions either require additional sensors in a node that reduce its battery life or require some kind of infrastructure and access to a database of anchor locations. Additionally, most solutions are for networks where nodes can communicate indiscriminately with each other. In this paper we introduce ReNLoc, a minimalistic anchor-free multilateration algorithm for 2D space (extendable to 3D space) with a centralized and a distributed version made for networks where the mobile nodes can only get range measurements to nodes with an unknown but fixed position that we call base nodes. The main assumption is that there is a minimum of three base nodes. ReNLoc takes advantage of geometric constraints that arise from the range measurements and represents them as sets on which we perform minimization over known geometric properties. We show that ReNLoc outperforms the commonly used multidimensional scaling (MDS) algorithm in a purely indirect ranging setup.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114298860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a bandwidth-sharing scheme to allow users with limited uplink bandwidth to borrow idle bandwidth from nearby access points and provide these users the opportunity to experience higher quality video than what their own bandwidth could normally support. We developed a Linux kernel implementation of a multipath less-than-best-effort (MP-LBE) protocol for bandwidth scavenging and demonstrated, through testbed experiments, that video quality may be improved through bandwidth sharing. This may bring us closer to the `video everywhere' vision even as incremental upgrades are made on broadband Internet infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115582370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In emerging dynamic spectrum access (DSA) networks as well as for recent interference limit policies such as harm claim threshold mechanisms, this is even more crucial for compliance enforcement since operational parameters additionally can include temporal constraints. In this paper, random temporal sampling is explored, for probabilistic characterization of temporal channel occupancy. The precision and bias performance due to various random temporal measurement plan designs are examined, both analytically as well as through experiments implemented using Software Defined Radio technology. A framework for performance analysis of random temporal sampling for compliance enforcement is presented, and a lower bound on sensing performance in terms of estimator precision is derived for spectrum occupancy modeled as an alternating renewal process. Using random sampling, estimator variance is seen to approach the theoretical lower bound using larger sample sizes, or through sparser sampling. Results further suggest that the detection error impacts the performance of random temporal sampling for average temporal occupancy estimation. The work further motivates the use of probabilistic characterization of spectrum occupancy for compliance enforcement, given the non-deterministic behavior of dynamic spectrum access mechanisms in emerging wireless network deployment scenarios.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128356887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
