The key insight underlying Magemite is, magnetic sensor integrated in smart devices can sense nearby magnetic field strength. Using a permanent magnet, users could “write” in ADS to communicate with matched devices. Different from previous magnetic-sensing schemes that recognize only coarse-grained gestures, Magemite can recognize user's fine-grained input like characters. However, individual's diverse writing patterns affect the recognition accuracy. To address this challenge, we preprocess the input trajectories and abstract different features of trajectories to uniquely identify user's input, then use these feature vectors to train several pattern recognition models for character recognition. We evaluate Magemite in various scenarios, and experimental results show Magemite can achieve average recognition accuracy over 85%.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126230654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Technologies enabling such data transfer (e.g., 802.11 or LTE) can adapt dynamically to changing conditions, which allows data transfers in a reliable way. However, applications have little or no influence on how those underlying systems execute their adaptations. Yet, in applications such as video streaming, this could provide important clues on what requirements are relevant for data delivery. In this demonstration, we present a system that allows application-defined underlay control to use such potentials in a mobile scalable video based streaming scenario by combining Android smartphones with software-defined radios (SDRs) for advanced physical layer control.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131389391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Network Mobility (NEMO) basic support protocol (B-NEMO) was introduced to provide Internet access for a group of users in a moving vehicle in an effective manner. As an extension of Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6), B-NEMO inherits the limitations from both the host-based and the centralized mobility management protocol such as sub-optimal routing (especially, in the nested NEMO scenario), reliability and scalability issues. Recently, Distributed Mobility Management (DMM) has been introduced as a new trend to overcome the limitations of the centralized mobility management protocols. However, DMM may not be a suitable scheme for moving vehicles since it faces several challenges such as complex address and tunnel management, high signaling cost, and long handover latency in case of users moving at a high speed. In this document, we propose a hybrid centralized-distributed mobility management architecture in the context of NEMO. Our solution allows the devices to obtain connectivity either from fixed locations or mobile platforms (e.g., a NEMO) and move between them, while keeping their on-going flows. The numerical results showed that the solution helps keeping the advantages of DMM approach in terms of signaling cost, packet delivery cost, handover latency, and end-to-end delay even in the moving vehicle scenario.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127857402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Facing the challenge, several algorithms have been proposed. Two good representatives are the Decentralized Congestion Control (DCC) framework defined by ETSI and LIMERIC, a linear control algorithm. Both algorithms control message transmission rate as a function of channel load (i.e., channel busy percentage, CBP). In this work, DCC is assumed to be deployed for day one applications and LIMERIC is introduced into the network afterwards. Given such a mixed vehicular network with vehicles running either DCC or LIMERIC, we evaluate the performance of the two algorithms in the mixed scenario and study the impact of such mixed network operation on the performance through ns-2 simulations. It is observed that converting some CAM-DCC vehicles to LIMERIC vehicles will not lead to any significant performance degradation of either CAM-DCC or LIMERIC vehicles. Any observed performance degradation is small enough so that we would expect typical DSRC applications to still be feasible. Performance differences between DCC and LIMERIC exist but they can be reduced through careful selection of the specific parameters of LIMERIC and DCC, respectively.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115941010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To offer a similar degree of reliability as wired solutions, the IEEE 802.15.4e, targeting factory automation, defines the Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) mechanism. It appears promising to reach a timely, reliable and energy efficient communication. In particular, the TSCH link allocation mechanism, which cares for transmission scheduling in time and frequency, plays a crucial role. In this paper we model and analyze a network monitoring solution for TSCH-based wireless sensor networks, which supplies the link scheduling algorithm with the necessary information about network health status. For distributing the information, we investigate the piggybacking principle and define a new information container for monitoring purposes in the MAC frame. We show the results of our preliminary evaluation for a centralized and a distributed approach in cluster-tree networks in terms of control plane overhead.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127144850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Buffer occupancy is usually not considered a problem and most of the related work assumes infinite buffers. In the present work, we focus on the drop ratio for message forwarding considering finite buffers. We model message drops with a continuous time Markov chain (CTMC). To the best of our knowledge, there is no previous work with such approach. We focus on the worst case with 1-packet buffers for message forwarding in homogeneous inter-contact times (ICT) and 2-class heterogeneous ICT. Our main contribution is to link the encounter rate(s) with the drop ratio. We show that the modeled drop ratio fits simulation results obtained with synthetic traces for both cases.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130805564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the limited resources and knowledge available at each node, compared to possibly vast amounts of data to be delivered, makes it difficult to devise efficient dissemination schemes. Recent solutions propose to use data dissemination algorithms built on human information processing schemes, modelled in cognitive sciences as Cognitive Heuristics. In general, they are methods used by the human brain to quickly assess relevance of information so to drop what is irrelevant. Recent solutions for data dissemination in OppNets based on these heuristics proved to be effective and efficient in terms of network overhead. However, to the best of our knowledge, none takes into consideration the structure of users' social relationships, which is known to determine movement patterns and thus contact opportunities between nodes. In this paper we propose a social-based data dissemination scheme, built on the Social Circle Heuristic (SCH). SCH exploits the structure of the social environment of users to infer the relevance of discovered information for the individual and their social communities. We compare the proposed scheme against state-of-the-art solutions based on non-social cognitive heuristics, both in terms of effectiveness (i.e., bringing messages to users that request it) and efficiency (i.e., doing so minimising the network traffic). We show that the scheme based on SCH significantly outperforms non-social cognitive schemes along both dimensions. In particular, the difference becomes more and more evident as scenarios becomes more and more dynamic. We finally show that in scenarios where new content is generated over time, the scheme based on SCH is the only one able to bring content to the interested users, while non-social schemes fail to do so while at the same time generating significant higher network traffic.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125596242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been shown that mobility models affect the results of the performance evaluation of wireless networks, e.g., contact and inter-contact times for opportunistic networks. However, even when using more realistic mobility models that consider street maps, the calculation of contact metrics widely relies on simplified propagation models. More realistic models such as ray launchers require 3-dimensional maps of the environment. We assume that the low availability of such maps is a major reason for falling back to more simplified models. We show that the level of detail in widely available map data from the OpenStreetMap-project is sufficient in certain scenarios such as the calculation of contact metrics. Our results open up a path to more realistic simulative performance evaluations using arbitrary cities.","PeriodicalId":221796,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115349470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
