Its treatment is becoming increasingly difficult due to the implication of Helicobacter pylori and its increasing resistance to antimicrobial agents leading to a cyclical course of exacerbation and remission. This study evaluated the antiulcer effects of methanol leaf extract and fractions of Helianthus annuus. The crude extract was prepared by cold maceration with methanol. A portion of the extract (300 g) was partitioned with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol to yield n-hexane (HF), ethyl acetate (EF) and methanol (MF) fractions respectively. The extract was subjected to oral acute toxicity (LD50) and phytochemical studies. The antiulcer activity of the extract and fractions was evaluated in rat experimental ulcer models induced with aspirin, ethanol and histamine. Omeprazole and Tween 80 served as the standard drug and negative control respectively. Activities related to antiulcer properties such as effect on gastrointestinal transit and antimicrobial activities were investigated. Outcome measures were ulcer index, percentage ulcer protection, percentage gastrointestinal inhibition and antimicrobial potency. Ulcers induced by the three ulcerogens were significantly (p < 0.05) ameliorated by the extract and the fractions. The extract and fractions significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited gastrointestinal motility in mice. They exhibited potent antibacterial activity but were devoid of anti-fungicidal property. At a dose of 5000 mg/kg (p.o), the extract caused no obvious signs of toxicity or death in mice. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of saponins, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides, terpenoids, as well as reducing sugars. The results show that the leaves of Helianthus annuus possess antiulcer properties with n-hexane fraction offering best ulcer protection. Cytoprotection, antispasmodic, as well as antibacterial actions may account for the mechanisms of the antiulcer effects.","PeriodicalId":221440,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Natural & Ayurvedic Medicine","volume":"110 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141216701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anantavata is among 11 types of sirorogas explained by Acharya Susruta. It is Vatapradhana sannipatika disease. Although it causes most excruciating pain to the patient, it is classified under sadhya vyadhi. TN has a higher incidence in women than men. Siravedha and Vata-Pitta shaman are mainly indicated in treatment of Anantavata. Nasya, lepa, parisheka, kavalagraha, shirovasti effectively pacify all the three doshas vitiated in shirah pradesh; thereby reducing pain. Acute pain episodes of trigeminal neuralgia can be managed with nasya karma, ksheera dhooma, ghrita pana, lepa and karna poorana. Patient is advised to consume food processed with large quantity of milk and ghrita. Oral medications along with local application of Ayurveda therapies produce significant relief in pain. All these modalities pacify the vitiated Vata dosha, eventually controlling the other two doshas. Anti-convulsant medications are always the first line of treatment for trigeminal neuralgia. Surgery is mainly indicated in patients who experience pain despite best medical management. Microvascular decompression (MVD) is the most invasive surgical procedure for treating trigeminal neuralgia, but has much lower success rates or may worsen the pain in many cases. Trigeminal neuralgia cannot be cured permanently. The main aim of treatment is to alleviate the debilitating pain. Ayurvedic treatment modalities like nasya karma, ghrita pana, lepa and karna poorana give salutiferous effects by breaking the samprapti of disease on the whole","PeriodicalId":221440,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Natural & Ayurvedic Medicine","volume":"109 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141217135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since its outbreak in late December in 2019, till as of June 9, 2020 the virus has infected 7,237,929 people throughout practically every country of the world and caused deaths of 409,630 persons. Thus far, despite the best efforts of scientists, any vaccine or drug against COVID-19 is yet to be discovered. The objective of the present study was to evaluate through molecular docking studies a number of quassinoid compounds (javanicins) present in the plant Picrasma javanica regarding their ability to bind to the main protease of COVID-19 [C3-like protease or 3CLpro, (PDB ID: 6LU7)]. Methods: Molecular docking (blind) were done with the help of AutodockVina. Results: We observed that of the twelve javanicins studied, nine showed moderate to strong binding affinities to the main protease of COVID-19. Furthermore, the binding in each case was to the active site of the protease. We observed that the javacinins bound to the region, which the protease inhibitor N3 has been shown to bind. Conclusion: It is therefore very likely that the javanicins are inhibitors of the coronavirus main protease. Since the protease plays an essential part in viral replication, javanicins merit further study for their potential use as therapeutic agents.","PeriodicalId":221440,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Natural & Ayurvedic Medicine","volume":"108 33","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141217196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Development of resistance against antibiotics and antiseptics is a growing cause of concern which has limited the preventive measures. Several commercially available allopathic medicines can alter oral microflora and have undesirable side effects, thus making alternative medicine important to maintain disease free oral health. Hence, the search for alternative products continues and plant extracts used in traditional medicine (ayurveda) are considered as good alternative to allopathic medicine. Aim: to study and determine various applications of ayurved products and herbs in oral health care. Objective: To bring about an understanding regarding integration of dentistry and ayurved. Material & Method: A PUBMED, MEDLINE, Medknow literature search was conducted using keywords Ayurveda, dentistry, oral health, Oil pulling, integration Apart from indexed journals, peer reviewed and non-indexed journals were also reviewed. Result: Traditional medicine can treat various infectious and chronic conditions. Research has shown that all kinds of chewing sticks described in ancient Ayurveda herbs have medicinal and anti-cariogenic properties. Its oil pulling (Kaval, Gandush) practice is claimed to cure gum diseases. Amla is a general rebuilder of oral health. Bilberry fruit and hawthorn berry stabilize collagen, strengthening the gum tissue. Liquorice root promotes anti-cavity action, reduces plaque, and has an antibacterial effect. The Jalandhar bandha is effective painless tooth extraction. Conclusion: The traditional knowledge of the Ayurved should be integrated with modern dental practice and encouraged to use ayurved preparations and herbal product in various oral lesion and diseases.","PeriodicalId":221440,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Natural & Ayurvedic Medicine","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125669172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Traditional Medicine: Usage of Herbal Remedies and Doubtful Treatment or a Powerful Healing Force?","authors":"Major Haw Boon Hong R","doi":"10.23880/jonam-16000179","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.23880/jonam-16000179","url":null,"abstract":"Alternative medicine is an approach to healing used in place of conventional medicine. Complementary medicine, on the other hand, is used together with conventional medicine. For example, if a special diet is used to treat cancer in place of surgery recommended by a conventional doctor, the diet would serve as an alternative therapy. However, if a special diet were used to combat high cholesterol levels in a patient with heart disease, in addition to coronary artery bypass surgery, the diet would serve as a complementary therapy. Since the same therapy can serve as either complementary or alternative, the various therapies outside the domain of conventional medicine are often grouped together under the term CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) therapies. The increasing interest in alternative medicine, which attempts to treat a patient‟s body, mind, and spirit, can be viewed as a measure of the spiritual hunger in our high-tech society. The desire within the medical community to integrate treatments for a patient‟s spiritual needs as well as physical needs is validating the importance of pastoral care in the hospital setting. Perhaps an approach to healing that makes use of the strengths of both conventional medicine and alternative medicine would enable a person to experience the best of both medical worlds. The forms of alternative medicine with scientific backing could be used to maintain health and increase physical fitness, while conventional medicine could be used to accurately diagnose and eradicate disease. Certain cautions, however, should be observed.","PeriodicalId":221440,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Natural & Ayurvedic Medicine","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117143806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The plant has been used in Ayurveda, Unani and Homoeopathic system medicine for over thousands of years. The leaves of this plant has shown astringent, antidiabetic, anti-inflammation and anti-pyretic activity and also used in the rheumatism. Objectives: The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the anti-arthritic activity of ethanolic extract of leaf of Carissa carandas against adjuvant - induced arthritis in rat. Materials and Methods: In this study both male as well as female Wister arts were used in the study. Arthritis was induced by injecting 0.1ml of freund’s complete adjuvant intra-dermally into the left hind paw of the rats. The paw volume, hematological, biochemical, radiographic and histopathological study were evaluated. Results: The extract shows significant reduction in the paw volume which was comparable with the standard and treated as well as normal group. The study reveals that extract as well as standard group shows mild reduction of paw volume where as in negative control sclerosis was seen. The changes in haematological parameters adjuvant induced arthritis shown there was significant increase of RBC count and haemoglobin, while there was significant decrease in WBC count and ESR of arthritic rats in comparison to control. The biochemical parameters such as ALT, ALP, and AST in arthritis induced by CFA group 2 it also showed that the administration of Carissa carandas at doses of 200mg and 400mg/kg in group 4, 5 and standard, in which a significant difference in the triglycerides was found. Conclusion: The effect of anti-arthritic activity of ethanolic extract of leaf of Carissa carandas was investigated in the present study may be due to synergistic effect of phytoconstituents, since the plant contains the active principle which are able to target through multiple mechanisms and which is used in pathophysiology of arthritis.","PeriodicalId":221440,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Natural & Ayurvedic Medicine","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126386896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
