In our scheme, the analog signal is intensity and orthogonally modulated on a pair of co-propagated photonic links, i.e. one of the two intensity modulations has a bias angle which is 90 degree difference from the other. At the remote end, the analog signal can be linearly recovered by a digital signal processing based on the direct detections of the link pair. We experimentally demonstrate our concept through a piece of polarization maintained fiber (PMF), a polarization modulator (PolM), a polarizer, and the dual-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. The PMF, PolM, and the polarizer constitute an asymmetric mach-zehnder modulator (A-MZM), whose bias angle can be tuned easily by tuning the input optical carrier wavelength. Experiment results show 26.8 dB suppression of the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) compared with the traditional quadrature-biased IM-DD link is achieved. A spectrally-sparse RF signal with unknown frequencies is modulated onto a highly chirped optical pulse. An optical channelizer slices the modulated pulse spectrum, which is equivalent to temporally sampling the RF waveform thanks to the dispersion-induced wavelength-to-time mapping. This serial-to-parallel conversion avoids the use of a high-speed detector and digitizer. Furthermore, compressive sensing with optical random demodulation is achieved using a spatial light modulator, enabling the system to capture the wideband multi-tone RF signal with a sampling rate far lower than the Nyquist rate. It is demonstrated that the temporal channelization system with a channel spacing of 20 GHz achieves RF spectrum sensing with a high resolution of 196 MHz. The input NRZ signal is multicast and converted to RZ signals at four wave mixing products and the pulsewidths follow those of the compressed clocks. The tunable pulsewidth of RZ signals outputs are around from 4.68 ps to 12.17 ps. The BER measurements were carried out for three subcarriers each modulated with 5 Gbaud QPSK or for two subcarriers modulated with 10 Gbaud QPSK, giving a total speed of 30 Gb/s or 40 Gb/s, respectively. Both a MIMO-supported access point (AP) and a spatial-diversity-supported AP were separately employed in the experiments. Throughput measurements were carried out with wireless users at different locations in a typical office environment. The results indicate that MIMO signals can maintain high throughput when the fiber length difference between the two remote antenna units (RAUs) is under 100 m and falls quickly when the length difference is greater. The external cavity functions as a passive-feedback section for the semiconductor laser. The optimum structure of an optically controlled passive-feedback laser (OC-PFL) for widening the 3-dB bandwidth of the laser is numerically analyzed. A broad 3-dB bandwidth of up to 40 GHz is experimentally confirmed by using a fabricated OC-PFL with a structure designed on the basis of the analysis results.
