By systematically studying the laser polarization and intensity dependence of the microwave signal it is possible to show that it is a nonlinear phenomenon and that it originates from optical rectification. We report in this work wide bandwidth detection of the generated microwave signals, achieved inside a coaxial copper structure.","PeriodicalId":220534,"journal":{"name":"Microwave Photonics (MWP) and the 2014 9th Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference (APMP) 2014 International Topical Meeting on","volume":"661 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115115616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The FODs on the airport surface may cause damage to aircraft and must be immediately removed. The optically-connected millimeter-wave radar with separated front-ends enables both low-cost and high-detection performance. In this paper, the feasibility and effectiveness of the 96 GHz optically-connected millimeter-wave radar is experimentally confirmed through the target detection test on the airport surface. The distributed millimeter-wave radar system, which is connected by the RoF converter, is fabricated. In addition, the radar reflectors, which are located on the apron of the Sendai airport, are successfully detected by the radar system.","PeriodicalId":220534,"journal":{"name":"Microwave Photonics (MWP) and the 2014 9th Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference (APMP) 2014 International Topical Meeting on","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115681607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It demonstrates the application of using bandpass sampling in a RoF communications system to overcome the high sampling rate requirement of conventional receivers and front-end hardware dependency. In particular, we modified the uniform bandpass sampling theorem to cope with frequency offset produced by independent free running optical local oscillator. Thereafter, a 40Mbit/s QPSK modulated data signal at 2.4GHz RF carrier frequency is experimentally demonstrated by using phase modulated and digital signal processing aided RoF links.","PeriodicalId":220534,"journal":{"name":"Microwave Photonics (MWP) and the 2014 9th Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference (APMP) 2014 International Topical Meeting on","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127203612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have proposed a system configuration using optical fiber cables instead of metal waveguides in order to protect microwave radio equipment from lightning. In this paper, an experimental demonstration using transmitting radio on fiber (RoF) link and receiving RoF link is introduced and measured total communication characteristics are also reported. In the experiments, antenna side optical to electrical (O/E) and electric to optical (E/O) converters were worked by power over fibers. We have successfully confirmed more than 37dB carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) under the 26dB dynamic range of received signal strength of 6.74GHz, 64QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation), 37.5Mbps radio frequency (RF) signal. An array of nanodipoles on an InP substrate is assumed, where the detection region consists of volumes of InGaAs located in the gaps of the nanodipoles. The responsivity of the photodetector is estimated to be ~100 mA/W at its peak value. A trend is observed for the power absorption in the detection region as a function of gap size; an optimum gap size exists that maximizes the product of the gap volume and the electric field enhancement in the gap. The 3 dB electrical bandwidth of the device is calculated assuming conventional and ballistic carrier transit in the detection region, yielding 0.7-4 THz.","PeriodicalId":220534,"journal":{"name":"Microwave Photonics (MWP) and the 2014 9th Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference (APMP) 2014 International Topical Meeting on","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130506481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
