Salt spray testing demonstrated that both systems maintained stability in corrosive environments for over 30 days. However, the TC4-based coating exhibited local edge warping on day 10, indicative of insufficient interfacial adhesion and structural instability. In contrast, the TiO 2 composite coating retained structural integrity throughout the test period, demonstrating superior corrosion resistance. Characterization analyses (SEM, TEM, EDS, FTIR, UV–Vis) revealed that TiO 2 particles achieved better dispersion and interfacial binding capacity, effectively minimizing pore formation and structural defects. The dense oxide layer on TiO 2 surfaces amplified the “maze effect,” significantly inhibiting corrosive medium penetration. Cross-cut adhesion testing and impact resistance evaluation further confirmed the TiO 2 system's advantages in interfacial bonding strength and mechanical robustness over the TC4 counterpart. Collectively, the TiO 2 –mineral hybrid coating demonstrates superior comprehensive protection properties and greater engineering application potential, offering a novel strategy for designing cost-effective, high-performance waterborne epoxy anticorrosion materials.","PeriodicalId":21995,"journal":{"name":"Surface Engineering","volume":"41 10-12","pages":"1069-1079"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147894606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scanning electron microscopy, EDS, and XRD confirmed the presence of zinc oxide particles with micron-level rough structures on the coating surface. Contact angle testing showed a static contact angle of up to 156° and a rolling angle of less than 5°, which is consistent with superhydrophobic properties. Electrochemical tests showed that the corrosion current density of the STZ coating was three orders of magnitude lower than that of the untreated substrate, and the charge transfer resistance was significantly higher, confirming a significant increase in corrosion resistance. After 400 linear abrasion cycles, the coating retained 70% of its hydrophobic properties. In self-cleaning tests, the rate of contaminant adhesion was reduced by 75% compared to the untreated substrate.This process provides a feasible solution for the long-term protection of aluminium alloys in harsh environments.","PeriodicalId":21995,"journal":{"name":"Surface Engineering","volume":"41 7","pages":"785-795"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147919445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimal coating retains its antifogging property for a notable 12 weeks. The antifogging behavior is mainly provided by Tween Ⓡ 40 within the coating. The low surface energy and micro-nano hierarchical structure of the prepared coating significantly enhance its water repellency and reduces its adhesion, resulting in water contact angle as high as 161° and sliding angle as low as 2°. The FluoroZnO-Fe surface demonstrated exceptional stability. Its water contact angle remains above 150° and water sliding angle remains below 5° even after treated with mechanical abrasion, high temperatures, and exposure to acidic and alkaline environments. Importantly, when subjected to heated circulating brine, the FluoroZnO-Fe coating exhibited remarkable anti-scaling properties, achieving a 93.4% reduction in scale deposition compared to untreated bare steel. This research highlights the potential of FluoroZnO-Fe coatings for industrial applications where corrosion resistance and self-cleaning properties are critical.","PeriodicalId":21995,"journal":{"name":"Surface Engineering","volume":"41 4","pages":"463-470"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147909959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effects of the electrolyte compositions as well as temperature and voltage on the growth and microstructure of anodic films were investigated. Results showed that all these parameters have effects on the current density of the anodizing process and thickness of the anodic films. The current density increases with process parameters except for Na 2 B 4 O 7 , while as the process parameters increase, the anodic film thickness initially increases and then decreases. The morphology of the anodic film is notably affected by variables NaOH, Na 2 B 4 O 7 , temperature, and voltage. Increasing NaOH concentration and temperature resulted in a decrease in surface uniformity, while Na 2 B 4 O 7 exhibited an opposite effect. Voltage significantly affected the diameter of the anodic film's pores, resulting in larger pores at higher voltages, which leading to poorer dyeing effect for the anodized samples.","PeriodicalId":21995,"journal":{"name":"Surface Engineering","volume":"41 1","pages":"55-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-11-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147916140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, a low-cost, reproducible process was presented to fabricate superhydrophobic anti-icing/de-icing surfaces. For this purpose, concave micro-structures were firstly created on the mold steel surface using femtosecond laser machining, and then the corresponding convex micro-structures were prepared on the surface of a silicone rubber (SR) composite mixed with multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using hot embossing. Thanks to the presence of unique micro-scale peak-ridge structures, the as-prepared SR/CNTs surfaces possess superhydrophobic characteristic. Long icing delay time was endowed by the large volume of air pockets inside micro-structures, and the icing time was significantly extended from 67 to 416 s, which is ascribed to the greatly inhibited heat transfer between the droplet and the surface. Moreover, the SR/CNTs surface had excellent photothermal conversion capability with the presence of photothermal particles CNTs, and the temperature of the surface increased rapidly from 21.6 to 86.1 °C in 5 min under a standard sunlight irradiation. In addition, the SR/CNTs surface also possesses superior photothermal defrosting and de-icing performance as the ice and frost on the surface can be quickly melted under a standard sunlight intensity irradiation and the de-icing rate is up to 0.92 mg/s. Finally, the good reusability of the mold steel and the resistance to mechanical wear and chemical corrosion of superhydrophobic SR/CNTs surface found in this work make the proposed approach promising for industrial mass production and anti-icing/de-icing applications in harsh environments.","PeriodicalId":21995,"journal":{"name":"Surface Engineering","volume":"40 7-8","pages":"895-906"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147917955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the micro-nano structural superhydrophobic surfaces are always fragile due to the poor mechanical stability. We demonstrate robust superhydrophobic surfaces with fine mechanical stability by spraying superhydrophobic coatings on rough substrates. Compared with the superhydrophobic coatings on smooth substrates (SCSS), the superhydrophobic coatings on rough substrates (SCRS) exhibit better mechanical durability because that the microstructures of the rough substrates can effectively protect superhydrophobic coatings from being destroyed under external force. The water contact angles (WCAs) of the SCRSs maintain at 152.1° ± 1.2° after 100 g sand scouring and at 139.5° ± 3.1° after 1000 g sand scouring, while the corresponding WCAs of the SCSSs will drop to 131.8° ± 2.2° and 102.6° ± 5.8°, respectively. Meanwhile, the influence of spraying process parameters on coating morphology, thickness, hydrophobicity and durability has been studied. The ratio of TiO 2 and ethyl cellulose in the coatings has been optimized, and the effects of the surface average roughness (Ra) and the coating thickness on the durability of the SCRSs have been studied. The SCRSs possess the best durability when the coating thickness is around 2/3 of the Ra of the substrate surface. The Ra of the substrate surface is fixed at 15.3μm, the durability of the SCRSs increases with the coating thickness at first. As the coating thickness exceeds 2/3 of the substrate Ra, the durability of the SCRSs decreases gradually if the coating thickness increases further. The conclusion is also verified by the SCRSs with aluminum alloys substrates under different Ra. Our work provides a feasible approach for the fabrication of robust superhydrophobic surfaces with excellent durability.","PeriodicalId":21995,"journal":{"name":"Surface Engineering","volume":"40 5","pages":"657-667"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147883485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially, this work focused on revealing how hydrothermal time affected the resistance to corrosion of SLIPSs. The electrochemical results indicated that when the hydrothermal duration was 24 h, the developed SLIPS exhibited remarkably improved corrosion resistance accompanied by the lowest corrosion current density of 2.5 × 10 −3 μA cm −2 . Furthermore, the results of immersion test demonstrated the superiority of SLIPSs in anti-corrosion durability. Based on the obtained results, the prepared SLIPSs can be promising candidates for the improvement in anti-corrosion performance of magnesium alloys.","PeriodicalId":21995,"journal":{"name":"Surface Engineering","volume":"40 5","pages":"648-656"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147885622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
