In this paper the preliminary results on modelling and design of a distributed feedback silicon laser are reported. The gain medium, which is a layer of erbium doped silicon-rich silicon oxide, is embedded in a horizontal slot waveguide. The designed device includes a grating with 140 periods and a quarter-wave phase shift at the grating middle. The threshold gain coefficient of the laser is 0.4 cm-1 and the emission wavelength is very close to 1.55 μm.","PeriodicalId":219746,"journal":{"name":"2014 Third Mediterranean Photonics Conference","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121338655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A strong light-matter interaction is allowed, due to a strong photons confinement in the metal slot, which corresponds to a low mode volume (V = 2×10<sup>-3</sup> (λ/n)<sup>3</sup>). A Q-factor of 2.6×10<sup>3</sup> has been obtained, providing a ultra-high Q/V = 1.3×10<sup>6</sup> (λ/n)<sup>-3</sup>, with a resonance transmission of 48 % λ = 1563.70 nm. Accurate 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations have been performed to design the cavity. Optical trapping has been identified as the most suitable application for the proposed device, due to a strong gradient of the light field in the metal slot that allows high values of optical force and, consequently, the ability to trap nanoparticle with a diameter less than 100 nm.","PeriodicalId":219746,"journal":{"name":"2014 Third Mediterranean Photonics Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122276154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mode coupling within such fibers is a critical aspect of propagation, for it poses a limit to system capacity. In this paper we analyze fiber twist as a possible cause of mode coupling. It is shown that in a twisted fiber the LP modes undergo a rigid rotation proportional to the twist applied to the fiber. This rotation involves both mode power distribution and mode polarization, generalizing the well known polarization rotation (optical activity) that occurs in twisted single mode fibers. The results of this analysis may enable a more accurate modeling of propagation in randomly coupled multi- and few-mode fibers.","PeriodicalId":219746,"journal":{"name":"2014 Third Mediterranean Photonics Conference","volume":"99B 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128481554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Responsivity measurements of the devices, as function of wavelength in the UV range, of package temperature and of applied reverse bias are reported. We also compared devices featuring different strip pitch sizes, discussing their performances, and found the device exhibiting best results.","PeriodicalId":219746,"journal":{"name":"2014 Third Mediterranean Photonics Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125186508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is made of a 635 nm laser source, two polarizers and a photo elastic modulator. The light is reflected on a thin film of magnetic material placed in the air gap of an Helmholtz pair in the longitudinal configuration. MOKE measurements have been performed to investigate the magnetic properties of thin films of different materials, as FeNi (Permalloy) and SmCo with different thicknesses, grown by magnetron sputtering and pulsed laser deposition techniques, respectively. Key magnetic features of the films are reported, as well as preliminary Kerr parameters obtained from measurements.","PeriodicalId":219746,"journal":{"name":"2014 Third Mediterranean Photonics Conference","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120962600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A standard LPG is first transformed in a more practical probe working in reflection mode, then it is coated by a primary layer of aPS and a secondary layer of PMMA in order to increase its surrounding refractive index sensitivity and at the same time provide the necessary conditions for a correct bio-functionalization. Standard linkage chemistry has been applied to anchor the bioreceptors on the probe surface. We show some preliminary results demonstrating the capability of our LPG biosensor to successfully monitor all the biological steps of the biomolecular experiments, including β-lactamase binding detection tests.","PeriodicalId":219746,"journal":{"name":"2014 Third Mediterranean Photonics Conference","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133195770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
