Oxides identified are hibonite, carmeltazite, and as yet unnamed minerals consisting of ZrTiO3, (Al,Ti,Zr) oxide, and (Mn,REE) oxide. An unnamed Ti2(Mn,Fe)4Si5 phase was also recognized. Silicates include wodegongjieite and grossmanite. All minerals are enriched in rare earth elements. The formation of these mineral inclusions under extreme P-T conditions would have occurred in the primeval Earth, preserved in the lithospheric mantle and protected from oxidation by crystallization of corundum through the introduction of mantle-derived magma-transported fluids. The corundum crystals would have been transported by a rising plume in a back-arc extensional setting during the Miocene and incorporated as xenocrysts in an alkaline ouachititic magma, conferring its peraluminous signature.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139227869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It occurs as sprays of bladed crystals (up to 0.40 × 0.07 × 0.03 mm). Associated minerals include lazaraskeite, chrysocolla, malachite, wulfenite, mimetite, phosphohedyphane, cerussite, hematite, calcite, microcline, phlogopite, and quartz. Stanevansite crystals are colorless in transmitted light, transparent with white streak and vitreous luster. They are brittle and have a Mohs hardness of ∼1½; cleavage is perfect on {100}. Twinning is common on (100). The measured and calculated densities are 1.69(5) and 1.682 g/cm3, respectively. Optically, stanevansite is biaxial (+), with α = 1.539(5), β = 1.545(5), γ = 1.558(5), 2Vmeas. = 62(2)°, 2Vcal. = 69°. It is insoluble in water, but slowly dissolves in hydrochloric acid. An electron-microprobe analysis yielded an empirical formula, based on 8 O apfu and Σ(Mg + Zn) = 1 apfu, of (Mg0.95Zn0.05)Σ1.00(C2H3O3)2·2H2O, which can be simplified as (Mg,Zn)(C2H3O3)2·2H2O. Stanevansite is monoclinic with space group P21/c and unit-cell parameters a = 11.4927(2), b = 5.85470(10), c = 12.4711(2) Å, β = 91.1610(10)°, V = 838.96(2) Å3, and Z = 4. It is isostructural with several synthetic glycolate compounds having the general chemical formula M2+(C2H3O3)2·2H2O, where M2+ = Co2+, Mn, Zn, and Mg. The crystal structure of stanevansite is characterized by the mononuclear complex [Mg(C2H3O3)2(H2O)2], with such complexes being connected to one another by hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture. In a [Mg(C2H3O3)2(H2O)2] complex, Mg is octahedrally coordinated by two chelating glycolate ligands and two H2O molecules. Stanevansite represents the first hydrous glycolate mineral and is believed to have formed through the interaction of fluids containing glycolic acid (C2H4O3) derived from decaying plant materials or bacterial activities with Mg produced by the alteration of primary and secondary minerals. Its discovery, together with other glycolate minerals documented recently, namely lazaraskeite Cu(C2H3O3)2, jimkrieghite Ca(C2H3O3)2, and lianbinite (NH4)(C2H3O3)(C2H4O3), not only implies that more glycolate minerals may be found in nature, but also suggests that glycolate minerals may serve as a potential reservoir for biologically fixed carbon.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139233585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the haywoodite structure, a disordered interlayer region contains approximately one Pb and ten H2O pfu. In the hanahanite structure, ZnO4 tetrahedra in adjacent sheets are linked by sharing corners and the interlayer region only contains an H2O group.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"2001 19","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135637319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pegmatite deposits produced approximately 60% of global lithium production in 2018, the vast majority of which was from spodumene pegmatites. However, there is lack of comprehensive models linking mineral system evolution and structural controls of lithium pegmatites. The majority of studies on lithium pegmatites have focused on chemical fractionation and assume that pegmatites have evolved from a parental granitic source, yet problems emerge when the connection between the granitic source and the pegmatite bodies is not obvious. This lack of connection has given rise to an alternative model of pegmatite formation, the anatectic model. In the anatectic model, granitic pegmatites form from granitic melts produced by partial melting of a suitable lithology, typically pelitic metasediments, without forming a large granitic body followed by fractional crystallization. Here, we first examine the formation of granitic melts related to anatexis, as well as how regional crustal structures influence chemical composition, crustal migration, and melt accumulation within the crust. We next examine the Wekusko Lake pegmatite field located in Manitoba, Canada, in terms of the probable melt source migration, the relationship between crustal-scale strain-zones and spatial pegmatite emplacement, and the chemical fractionation trend that records the formation of lithium-enriched pegmatites.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"11 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135973669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research uses point-dipole theory to calculate the optical properties of α-quartz strained in various ways. Strain was modeled by distorting the lattice. Calculations that relate to simple a-axis compression involve decreasing the a-axis in small increments. Shear strain is modeled by altering the interaxial angles in small increments. The calculations agree with published experiments and observations on natural quartz tectonites. The methodology is transferable to other minerals. Point-dipole theory, as applied in this study, has the potential for quantifying the stress responsible for optical manifestations of strain in minerals. The strategy may be useful for designing laboratory experiments, understanding experimental results, and interpreting petrographic observations.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"7 22","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135973094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Biotic-Abiotic Radial-Acicular Crystal Fan Fabrics with Rosickýite at the Angel Springs Tufa-TRAVERTINE Deposit in Southern British Columbia","authors":"Paul L. Broughton","doi":"10.3749/2300015","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3749/2300015","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT The tufa-travertine deposit at Angel Springs developed through the interaction of thermal waters with bedrock of the Proterozoic Okanagan Gneiss, which extends along the eastern margin of the Okanagan Valley fault system in south-central British Columbia. This warm spring is proximal to Miocene plateau basalt flows that cut the Okanagan Gneiss bedrock eastward of the Okanagan Valley. The carbonate deposit, which is widely referenced as tufa, consists of a tufa and an overlying travertine. These texturally and petrographically different deposits developed in response to a shift in the groundwater pathway wherein the surface discharge transitioned from multiple vents of the tufa to a single downslope vent pool of the overlying travertine. Lower interval tufa fabrics are characterized by networks of fenestral-type porosity supported by a framework of curvilinear stromatolitic sheets of calcite that resulted from the partial coalescence of sub-horizontal arrays of calcite-encrusted cyanobacteria. These tufa fabrics aligned with the strong stream flow emanating from multiple vents. In contrast, radial crystal fan fabrics of the upper interval travertine developed with the transition from biotic calcite encrustations of upward branching cyanobacteria to the abiotic development of radial crystal fans. Length-long mouldic porosity tubules were occluded as the abiotic sheaf- and fan-shaped crystal growth surfaces expanded radially with rapid degassing. Core areas of the radial crystal arrays coalesced and were partially recrystallized, resulting in spheroidal crystalline fabrics that preserve inclusion-delineated concentric growth surfaces. Syntaxial overgrowths of radially aligned acicular crystals rapidly expanded from these core areas of coalesced calcite, resulting in the formation of abiotic radial-acicular and starburst crystal arrangements. The biotic–abiotic transition resulted in the rapid growth of abiotic crystal fans as the dominant deposition process of the upper interval travertine fabrics, but not in the lower interval tufa fabrics. Activities of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the sulfate-rich thermal water of both intervals resulted in precipitation of rosickýite, the monoclinic polymorph of S, as nanocrystalline globular protuberances on surfaces of calcite crystals. This is the first recorded occurrence of rosickýite in a tufa-travertine deposit and the first recognition of this mineral in Canada.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135111532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
