A number of studies conducted over the last thirty years have provided the opportunity to unravel the features of the gem andradite and its deposits through field and laboratory research, including the history of their discovery, their geology, geodynamic framework, petrography and mineralogy, solid and fluid inclusions, chemistry, and stable oxygen isotopes. The different features are compared in order to propose a geological classification and a genetic model for the formation of these deposits and finally to approach the question on the geological and geographical origins of the demantoid and why it is so rare on Earth.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"63 5","pages":"421-465"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147915571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the questions of when and how this reduction occurred in most uranium deposits, such as those in the Athabasca basin, Saskatchewan, Canada, are often not clear. The unconformity-related uranium deposits in the Athabasca basin are commonly accompanied by extensive and intensive alteration halos, including hematite-rich alteration or hematitization. Previous U L3-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) studies of uranium-bearing fluid inclusions and thermodynamic modeling demonstrated uranium transport as uranyl (UO22+) species in hypersaline fluids in the Athabasca basin. Electron microprobe analyses reveal that hematite inclusions in quartz overgrowths, as well as some disseminated hematite in clay mineral (illite-chlorite) matrices, in both orebodies and associated alteration halos from five uranium deposits (Arrow, Cigar Lake, Key Lake, McArthur River, and Phoenix) in the Athabasca basin contain elevated contents of uranium (up to 2.16 wt.% UO3). Synchrotron U L3-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and U 4f X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses show that uranium in hematite occurs dominantly as the uranyl species, providing unambiguous evidence for direct uranyl deposition in the Athabasca basin. However, direct uranyl deposition with hematite during a single episode of hydrothermal alteration can account for only low-grade uranium mineralization. High-grade uranium deposits in the Athabasca basin required multiple episodes of hydrothermal alteration and/or other deposition mechanisms, such as those related to reduction.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"63 1","pages":"3-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147914469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although tiny, its plagioclase-rich and noritic character suggested that it might hold clues (possible parental magma?) to the origin of closely associated andesine anorthosites in this part of Québec. The pluton is characterized by spectacular coarse-grained diabasic textures and varies from relatively massive to locally layered varieties. Both coarse- and medium-grained types occur and may be present together in some outcrops. Rare occurrences of snowflake-textured plagioclase are also present. The mafic mineralogy is dominated by orthopyroxene and Fe-Ti oxides (ilmenite and magnetite) with minor clinopyroxene, amphibole (Ti-pargasite), and Ti-rich biotite. Olivine occurs in one of the norites and in a single occurrence of an ultramafic rock that is also enriched in Fe-Ti oxides. Plagioclase compositions range from An32 to An48, but can be divided into two groups on the basis of texture: in one subset of samples, the plagioclase contains exsolution lamellae of orthoclase (i.e., antiperthitic), whereas plagioclase in the remaining samples lacks such lamellae and has not exsolved. Despite these textural contrasts, whole-rock compositions of the two groups are similar. Surprisingly, the compositions of pyroxene, biotite, and ilmenite reveal two non-overlapping compositional groups that correlate with those defined by plagioclase texture. Specifically, mafic minerals in the group with unexsolved plagioclase are consistently enriched in minor elements compared to those in the group with antiperthitic plagioclase. We interpret these contrasts to reflect differences in cooling rate for at least two injections of noritic magma. Moreover, the snowflake plagioclase grains are consistent with some degree of undercooling and supersaturation brought about by magma mixing. Although the norite shares some mineralogical and geochemical features with nearby anorthosites, it does not appear to represent a viable parent magma, primarily due to a pronounced difference in Fe-Ti oxide assemblage (hemo-ilmenite in the anorthosites versus ilmenite + magnetite in L’Enfer).","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"36 46","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138946690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Crystals are thin prisms or needles up to ∼0.3 mm in length, occurring as individuals and in divergent sprays. Trebiskyite crystals are translucent yellow with vitreous luster and pale-yellow streak and are non-fluorescent under both longwave and shortwave ultraviolet illumination. The crystals exhibit elongation on [001] and are modified by several 0kl prism forms, possibly corresponding to {010}, {011}, and {012}. The Mohs hardness is ca. 2 based on scratch tests. Crystals have brittle tenacity with irregular fracture. No apparent cleavage, nor twinning, was evident, and the mineral is readily soluble in H2O. The density measured by flotation in methylene iodide-toluene mixture is 2.38(2) g/cm3. The calculated density is 2.352 g/cm3 for the empirical formula and 2.343 g/cm3 for the ideal formula. Electron microprobe analyses provided the empirical formula Na3.39Mg1.87V8.75Ti1.25O50H44.00, based on Ti + V = 10 apfu, O = 50 apfu, with the Na content having been determined from the refined crystal structure. Trebiskyite is monoclinic, space group P21/c, a = 9.478(4), b = 21.426(11), c = 11.267(5) Å, β = 114.572(7)°, V = 2080.8(13) Å3, Z = 2. The structure was refined from 6642 reflections to a final R1 = 0.0517 for reflections I > 2σ(I). The structural unit of trebiskyite, (TiV9O28)7−, is built from a Ti-substituted decavanadate polyanion, (V10O28)6−, found in other members of the pascoite family. Chemically, trebiskyite is closely related to lasalite, Na2Mg2[V10O28]·20H2O, and huemulite, Na4Mg[V10O28]·24H2O; however, trebiskyite contains a novel structural arrangement that is unique among the decavanadate minerals. The interstitial complex in trebiskyite has the ideal formula {[Na3Mg2(H2O)19](H2O)3} and consists of chains of distorted octahedrally coordinated Na+ and regular Mg[O(H2O)5] octahedra. The observed low incident bond valence to the V1 site (4.45 vu) and marked deviation in vanadyl and V–Oeq bond lengths indicate that this site is host to the essential Ti4+ identified during chemical analyses.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"24 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139168606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The kimberlite indicator mineral chromite is investigated in this study using micro-X-ray diffraction (µXRD) to measure chromite unit cell parameter ao. We used epoxy-mounted chromium-rich spinel (henceforward called ‘chromite’) mineral separates with known chemical composition from kimberlitic and non-kimberlitic sources to evaluate structural-chemical correlations for potential use in diamond exploration. Chromite grains of <300 µm size from the Koala, Misery, and Sheiba kimberlites in the Ekati property (Northwest Territories, Canada), as well as from exploration programs in Botswana and Gabon, Africa, were examined in situ, as mounted for standard electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Unit cell parameter ao was measured by µXRD for several natural kimberlitic and non-kimberlitic chromite grains, and these data have been correlated with chemical composition as determined by EPMA on a grain-by-grain basis. Conventional chemical discrimination plots with unit cell size denoted by color demonstrate clearly discernable unit cell trends that are useful for classification. Two kimberlitic chromite compositional trends can be discriminated by chromite unit cell size. The kimberlitic phenocryst trend is delineated by a distinct increase in unit cell size (ao > 8.336 Å), whereas the kimberlitic xenocryst trend is delineated by a distinct decrease in the unit cell (ao < 8.322 Å). The latter trend is also followed by the Gabon non-kimberlitic samples. Notably, the unit cell parameters for chromite in the diamond-indicating field have a tightly determined value of ao = 8.329 (± 0.007) (or 8.322–8.336 Å). This field partially overlaps with the unit cell values for some non-kimberlitic chromites (e.g., Botswana). Unit cell values of chromite grains recovered from heavy mineral concentrates could serve as a preliminary screening technique for identifying diamond-indicating chromites prior to chemical analysis if their kimberlitic provenance is known. More broadly, the μ-XRD unit cell technique is a useful, non-destructive tool that shows promise for application to other kimberlite indicator minerals.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"64 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139175045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Field-emission electron-microprobe analyses indicate amounts of Au of up to about 3.4 wt.% at the expense of As, without affecting Pt, the amount of which remains stoichiometric, i.e., 1.0 atom per formula unit (1.0 apfu Pt). Transmission electron microscopy of sperrylite foils, extracted by focused ion beam (FIB), shows no gold nanoparticles and thus provides evidence for Au-bearing sperrylite. The finding of Au-bearing sperrylite represents a Au-rich example of invisible Au in sulfide and arsenide minerals. Regionally, the occurrence of gold-hosted inclusions of Au-bearing sperrylite is in line with the highly oxidized fluid environment of the auriferous lodes that characterize the platiniferous Au-Pd belt of Minas Gerais.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"179 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139176028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It develops in spherulitic aggregates up to ∼2 mm across, comprising thin, platy to bladed crystals, with individual crystals averaging <0.05 × 0.5 mm. Crystals are dominated by the form pinacoid {100} with a lesser {hk0} form and typically range from tan to creamy-yellow to white in color, less often being colorless, light or dark green, or white. Associated minerals include eudialyte-group minerals, aegirine, a clinoamphibole, serandite-group minerals, natrolite, molybdenite, pyrite, fluorite, sodalite, catapleiite, rinkite-group minerals, albite, villiaumite, pyrochlore, fluorapatite, microcline, and erdite. Kodamaite is translucent to transparent and has a silky to slightly vitreous luster, a white streak, a Mohs hardness of ∼2, a perfect {001} cleavage, a sectile tenacity, and a smooth fracture. The mineral shows a pronounced bluish-white fluorescence under both long- and medium-wave ultraviolet radiation, much less so under short-wave radiation. The calculated density is 2.16 g/cm3. Optically, kodamaite is presumed to be optically biaxial, but its optical properties could not be readily discerned. An average nD = 1.507 (for λ = 590 nm) was calculated using data from the refined crystal structure. It is non-pleochroic, has low birefringence (first-order gray) and crystals are length slow and show no dispersion. The Raman spectrum shows two strong peaks at 607 (O–Si–O stretch) and 1070 cm−1 (Si–O stretch), along with several weaker ones over the range of ∼100–500 cm−1 arising from a combination of alkali–O bonds and lattice vibrations. These are also classified following the nomenclature scheme adopted by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association for PSM (IMA-10) and including both subsequent group and species updates. The program considers classification among the 33 IMA-approved PSM, as well as ten species that have not been approved, adhering to the general formula A2B2X6Y and considering the dominant ions at the A, B, and Y sites. It considers PSM represented by the pyrochlore, microlite, roméite, elsmoreite, and betafite groups, along with unassigned members of the ralstonite and coulsellite groups. Mineral formulae of the PSM are calculated based on the ideal number of B cations being two apfu, owing to the potential for vacancies at the A, X, and Y sites. WinPclclas operates in four stages: (1) it estimates cation and anion contents provided by input chemical data; (2) it determines the dominant cation and anion at the A, B, and Y sites; (3) it assigns the PSM to one of the seven groups, based on the dominant cation at the B site (i.e., W6+, Nb5+, Ta5+, Sb5+, Ti4+, Al3+, and Mg2+); and (4) it classifies the pyrochlore species into an appropriate group, based on the dominant cation at the A site and the dominant anion at the Y site. The H2O (wt.%) content for the PSM is estimated by stoichiometric constraints. WinPclclas allows users to: (1) enter up to 51 input variables for mineral-chemical analyses; (2) type and load multiple PSM compositions in the data entry section; (3) edit and load the Microsoft® Excel files used in calculating, classifying, and naming the PSM, together with the total monovalent to hexavalent cation, and (4) store all the calculated parameters in the output of a Microsoft® Excel file for further data evaluations. Clinochlore, with a grain size of 5–10 μm, was analyzed using heating rates of 2, 5, 10, 20, and 40 K/min at temperatures of up to 1260 K. Thermogravimetric data of clinochlore at different heating rates were modeled using the Kissinger method, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method, and Coats-Redfern method. The dehydration of clinochlore is ascribed to the decomposition of brucite and talc layers. The dehydration temperature of the brucite layer is 730–920 K, which corresponds to a two-dimensional phase boundary model (R2) with an activation energy of 214.94 ± 7.79 kJ/mol and a pre-exponential factor of 12.52 ± 0.62 min−1. The dehydration temperature of the talc-like layer is 960–1140 K, which follows a two-dimensional diffusion model with an apparent activation energy of 419.49 ± 23.62 kJ/mol and a pre-exponential factor of 19.97 ± 1.76 min−1. Combined with the parameters obtained in this study, the fast dehydration of clinochlore can trigger earthquakes in the subduction zone.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"6 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138591743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To fill these knowledge gaps, we generated the first thermodynamic data set for carrollite using well-characterized samples obtained from the stratiform sulfide mineralization style at Fungurume 88 deposit in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Detailed mineralogical investigation of these same samples suggests that carrollite has limited ability to incorporate other ‘sweetener’ elements (except Cu and Ni) by substitution mechanisms. Modeling using CHNOSZ 2.0.0. software and an integrated Cu-Co-S-O thermodynamic data set provides insights into the stability of carrollite relative to other Co-bearing minerals under physicochemical conditions relevant to the Central African Copperbelt. Further exploration of these models indicates that dropping redox potential in the mineralizing system is insufficient to explain the mineral-scale and deposit-scale zonation patterns commonly observed in Cu-Co deposits of the Central African Copperbelt. Instead, factors such as increasing pH, decreasing T, decreasing sulfur activity, or some combination of changing physicochemical parameters may need to be invoked to explain these zonation trends. At the Fungurume 88 deposit, the absence of linnaeite (Co3S4) suggests that ore precipitation occurred at temperatures cooler than 211 °C. From our pH-logfO2 diagrams, and relative to higher temperatures, such a lower T regime is marked by a greater degree of offset between the modeled Cu and Co solubility contours, thus facilitating a more differentiated and zoned distribution of these two metals at the deposit scale. Our models are offered to the geoscience community as exceptionally useful tools for modeling and visualizing the Cu-Co-S-O systematics and may be applied to a variety of geological and geometallurgical questions in the Central African Copperbelt and other deposits elsewhere.","PeriodicalId":218967,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology","volume":"43 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138593861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
