The large envelope variations of the transmitted signals is the main drawback, which degrades the performance of the wireless systems and increases the power consumption of the transmitter.Two different PAPR reduction techniques, Clipping and Filtering (CAF) and Selective Mapping (SLM) are evaluated by using the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of the PAPR for both access schemes. Simulation results show that CAF is very effective for both OFDMA and SC-FDMA in reducing PAPR levels.","PeriodicalId":217788,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Fourth Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (ETCM)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125020860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have been used on multiple applications. Paper is promising since colorimetric assays could be read with the naked eyed or a cell phone camera. Here we systematically tested several possible readers for bio-assays that use as a base a μPADs biosensors. Specifically, we tested digital imaging of an assay that produces a change of colors, imaging of a fluorescence-based assay, and an automatic scanning based on an in-house Multispectral-image Reconstruction System for colorimetric assays. We used commercial tests, both chemical and enzyme-based tests; as well as an in house test that used the emerging technology of DNA aptamers. Similarly, we evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of each setup and demonstrate how adaptable, fast, and versatile μPADs analysis can be. s. Finally, we suggest points of consideration to develop commercial point-of-care applications based on μPADs.","PeriodicalId":217788,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Fourth Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (ETCM)","volume":"183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125940739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The same trend occurs with greenhouse gas emissions. HVAC and lighting systems offer thermal and visual comfort to the occupants in buildings, but these are the ones with the highest energy consumption. Many investigations are being carried out to reduce the consumption of the previously mentioned systems and other electric equipment existing in the buildings. This paper reviews some relevant works related to initiatives to reduce energy consumption in buildings such as improvements in lighting and HVAC control systems, estimation of occupancy levels through sensor networks, dimming of artificial lighting, exploitation of daylight through the control of blinds and improvement of components in air conditioning systems/heat pumps. Prediction/estimation models of energy consumption are also analyzed, which are vital tools for reducing the operating costs of the building mainly electrical energy. Besides, we establish the future challenges and trends of the analyzed technologies.","PeriodicalId":217788,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Fourth Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (ETCM)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123909027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this sense, photovoltaic generation micro-systems are a promising technology. This work faces the problem of finding the optimal capacity of the photovoltaic (PV) micro-system to be installed by a residential customer –which at the same time is connected to the public grid-, and it is able to compensate the public power electricity consumption through self-supply, with PV generation. In this sense, two approaches are proposed in this paper. The deterministic approach assumes all input variables are known with certainty and focuses on matching the expected demand with an estimated PV generation. Starting from this deterministic perspective, the stochastic approach uses a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to obtain the most likely capacity of the PV power micro-system which will match consumption with generation during an established time period, while uncertain input variables are randomly modeled by means of probability distribution functions within a Monte Carlo (MC) technique. Temperature and irradiance are considered as random variables. Optimal PV power is obtained in a proposed study case, where net measured energy resulting from the optimization process reaches about 0.0003 kWh during one day. In addition, the levelized cost of energy is calculated. It shows the benefit of PV energy whose cost (0.078 US$/kWh) is lower than the nominal cost considering distributor rates. The results are successfully tested through an energy management system (EMS) developed to validate the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":217788,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Fourth Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (ETCM)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123330565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After a contingency, the assessment stage starts with the Voltage Stability Margin (VSM) evaluation, using the continuation power flow technique. If VSM is lesser than a threshold, the improvement stage takes place. Four control measures are considered, in the following order: reactive power compensation, generators terminal voltage setpoint variation, active power redispatch and load shedding. The proposed methodology is tested on the New England IEEE 39-bus and IEEE 300-bus systems. The results show the ability of the proposed methodology to improve the voltage stability of a power system after a N-1 contingency and can be a valuable tool in the on-line operation of the power system.","PeriodicalId":217788,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Fourth Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (ETCM)","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126328852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The polymer chosen for this study is poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA), widely used in tissue engineering [1]. PVA can be tailored for mechanical properties and has high-performance degradation kinetics. Its morphology and shape can be easily manipulated to improve vascular conduction and tissue induction. PVA is an excellent candidate for the manufacture of hydrogels with high tissue repair capacity and low cytotoxicity. We studied the water-polymer interaction of the material using a molecular dynamics (MD) approach for the calculation of solvation free energy and other parameters. For the modeling and data analysis, we used the high-performance computational software, Gromacs. Hydrogels were prepared at 10, 20, and 35 WT PVA. The hydrogel morphology and pore size were analyzed by SEM. Pore diameter tended to be larger when swelling in water than in PBS. The end-to-end distance of the MD simulated 30-mer was found to be larger in pure water than in the presence of ions. The trend can partially explain the experimental results of pore size. We also found an important change in solvation free energy when the polymer changes from an open to a closed conformation in water.","PeriodicalId":217788,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Fourth Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (ETCM)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132199043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The AVR is designed using the feedback exact linearization of the synchronous machine dynamic equations fixed to the rotor reference frame and setting a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) controller to adjust the machine field voltage. This algorithm was first evaluated using an OPAL-RT real-time simulator environment and then, an actual synchronous machine was included in the system using a Hardware in the Loop (HIL) approach. The system was implemented and experimentally verified on a 1.2 kVA cylindrical-rotor synchronous generator, where the proposed AVR regulates the terminal voltage with a steady-state error below of 1% for load steps of 40%.","PeriodicalId":217788,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Fourth Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (ETCM)","volume":"206 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134482754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The NSB-SMC algorithm includes a sliding mode control scheme (SMC) to improve robustness with respect to a null space-based controller with a type PID (NSB-PID). The tasks to achieve are to maintain the formation, posture and at the same time the avoidance of obstacles within a formation of mobile robots. The algorithm of static and dynamic obstacle avoidance base on the method of potential fields; and force feedback for the human operator is performed through a Gaussian zone that generates a force of repulsion in the presence of obstacles. Moreover, a haptic device allows interpreting the intention of the user applying the criterion of mechanical impedance. General control system stability is analyzed through the Lyapunov theory. Finally, the novel NSB-SMC algorithm and the NSB-PID controller are compared, demonstrating better performance in the proposed scheme.","PeriodicalId":217788,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Fourth Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (ETCM)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121108235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
