Key to this is the development of a high-functionality, low-energy active remote node (ARN) offering high-speed switching and statistical-multiplexing features for maximal exploitation of available network resources, together with radio, wavelength conversion and legacy systems compatibility. The proposed architecture features an optimized and sophisticated management and control plane, allowing service providers to transparently monitor their connections, so simplifying network management and application interoperability with heterogeneous networks. Although inherently future-proofed, the proposed network platform is also intrinsically compatible with existing PON and wireless access solutions: fixed fibre and radio access, LTE and beyond, and legacy services (CATV and DSL technologies) can all be delivered and managed in an open access environment. In addition, its low-energy and low-cost design offers an environmentally sustainable technology solution, whilst acting as a critical enabler for new smart services, e-society initiatives, and intelligent lifestyle management.","PeriodicalId":217442,"journal":{"name":"2012 14th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON)","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124154748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Gaussian pulses with different centre frequencies and lengths are incident at oblique angles on the finite stack of nonlinear dielectric layers. The properties of the reflected and refracted waveforms and the effects of the structure and the incident pulses' parameters on the mixing process are discussed. It is shown that the efficiency of forward emission at the combinatorial frequency can be considerably increased when the wavelengths of interacting pulses are close to the edges of electromagnetic bandgap.","PeriodicalId":217442,"journal":{"name":"2012 14th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128013331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, such materials present advantageous features such as a high productivity, high flexibility, and ease of processing; hence, the application of these materials for energy harvesting purposes has been of significant interest over the last few years. The purpose of this paper is to propose the mechanical effect on the performance of electrostrictive polymers for energy harvesting. when the sample simultaneously driven by an electrical field and a mechanical excitation. Experimental measurements of the harvested power has been compared with the theoretical behavior predicted by the proposed model. A good agreement was observed between the experimental and the theoretical results. Finally, the results indicated that the strain was the crucial parameter for a good efficiency of the electromechanical conversion with electrostrictive polymers.","PeriodicalId":217442,"journal":{"name":"2012 14th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131977513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The particular lanthanide elements considered include dysprosium, praseodymium and terbium. Both classical 3 level lasing systems and cascade lasing systems are considered, and their properties compared. Steady state and pulsed operation of the lasers is considered and the possible application as a seed pump for supercontinuum generation is discussed. Anycast switching (AS) technique makes a per-packet granularity balancing of the traffic among the lightpaths bundled. LB+AS combination requires seamless changes in the switching nodes and no changes in the optical infrastructure. This paper evaluates by means of simulation the improvements in TCP performances when LB+AS paradigm is applied to the network. In our results, LB+AS improved TCP throughput (up to 18%), decreased average drop rates and reduced the average queuing delay in the bottleneck link (up to 15%).","PeriodicalId":217442,"journal":{"name":"2012 14th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134531629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modal characteristics, such as propagation loss and confinement factor were obtained for a wavelength of 1.55 μm.
