SHREK features technical breakthroughs in the areas of Realistic Humans (facial animation, clothing, hair and fur); Natural Environments (forests, trees and foliage); and Special Effects (CG liquids, i.e. water, mud, beer, milk along with CG fire and lava). Particles placed in the seats of the stadium were replaced by animation cycles of the aliens. Other important challenges were the high level of subtlety in the expressions of the aliens' performance and the unusual design of the aliens. The proportions of their hands and the backwards articulation of their legs made it particularly tricky to create a fluid animation.
