The Light Vertex Cache (LVC) based BDPT method by Davidovic et al. [Davidovič et al. 2014] provided good performance on scenes with simple materials in a progressive rendering scenario. In this paper, we propose a new bidirectional path tracing formulation based on the LVC approach that handles scenes with complex, layered materials efficiently on the GPU. We achieve coherent material evaluation while conserving GPU memory requirements using sorting. We propose a modified method for selecting light vertices using the contribution importance which improves the image quality for a given amount of work. Progressive rendering can empower artists in the production pipeline to iterate and preview their work quickly. We hope the work presented here will enable the use of GPUs in the production pipeline with complex materials and complicated lighting scenarios.","PeriodicalId":21720,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Technical Briefs","volume":"179 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76992113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most off-the-shelf kinesthetic haptic devices, such as the popular Phantom devices, are not well-suited to display high-fidelity vibrotactile feedback for the high frequency force components in surgical tools such as a reciprocating bone saw. In these haptic devices, forces are mediated from the actuators to the user through a mechanical linkage, in which inertia, friction, and backlash may distort the feedback. In addition, sustained display of vibrations may cause undue wear of the device. We propose a hybrid solution combining kinesthetic feedback from an off-the-shelf haptic device with high-fidelity vibration feedback from a vibrotactile actuator, and show that the hybrid is able to reproduce vibrations of an actual surgical reciprocating saw within the full perceptible frequency range.","PeriodicalId":21720,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Technical Briefs","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91014333","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our focus is on objects composed of a set of planar beams and joints, where the joints are thin parts of the object which temporarily become living hinges when heated, close to a fixed angle defined by the local shape, and then become rigid when cooled. We call this class of objects Meltables. We present a novel algorithm that computes an optimal joint sequence which approximates a 3D spline curve while satisfying fabrication constraints. This technique is used in an interactive Meltables design tool. We demonstrate a variety of Meltables, fabricated with both 3D-printing and standard PVC piping.","PeriodicalId":21720,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Technical Briefs","volume":"118 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91519094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The core idea is to identify the corresponding objects in the two images in order to select patches more appropriately. We automatically make a region correspondence between the painted source image and the target photograph by computing color and texture feature distances. Next, we conduct a patch-based synthesis that preserves the appropriate source and target features. Unlike previous example-based approaches of painting style transfer, our results successfully reflect the features of the source images even if the input images have various colors and textures. Our method allows us to automatically render a new painted image preserving the features of the source image.","PeriodicalId":21720,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Technical Briefs","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89273307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed completion algorithm is the video extension of an inpainting algorithm proven to be effective on still images. Then, the proposed space-time artifact reduction technique blends multiple patches, guided by a tensor model in order to preserve local structures and textures as much as possible. The original algorithm is not applicable to concave shapes since the weights are based on the Euclidean distance. A number of recent MLS-based deformation algorithms have proposed shape-aware extensions, but only for point handles. In contrast, we suggest a closed-form mathematical solution that applies naturally to point handles as well as line handles. In particular, our solution is based on the interior distance metric to the MLS weights for line handles so that they are shape aware and produce plausible deformations.","PeriodicalId":21720,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Technical Briefs","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86924027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, the proposed method first retrieves 3D shapes based on the sketch, and then implements a deformation procedure to make the most similar model retrieved more consistent with the provided sketch. In the retrieval stage, a locality preserving view selection scheme is adopted to generate views that are well-suited to create sketch images for the 3D object. Our method predicates the sketch views accurately while significantly reduces the amount of rendering views. In the deformation stage, retrieved models are modified according to the input sketches. Since free-hand sketches always contain various kinds of drawing errors such as stroke jittering and asymmetry, extracting plausible deforming information from sketches while discarding undesirable drawing errors is difficult. To address these issues, we obtain the plausible deformation for the corresponding sketch by exploring a shape manifold trained on a collection of similar 3D models. Experimental results show that the proposed method can generate 3D shapes that correspond quite well with 2D sketches.","PeriodicalId":21720,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Technical Briefs","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90167948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Image denoising is essential for image processing, and its efficiency is important for graphics applications. R-DCT with a hard-thresholding or shrinkage method can perform denoising while keeping detail textures. Moreover, the method is computationally efficient compared with state-of-the-art denoising methods, such as BM3D. The computational cost, however, is still insufficient for real-time processing; hence, we accelerate the method by using randomized subsampling of DCT patches. Experimental results show that our method can accelerate the processing while the degradation of denoising performance is a little.","PeriodicalId":21720,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Technical Briefs","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80259334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
