As an integral component of the ISO/ITU-T Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP), service brokering may be applied at multiple layers of the software hierarchy, spanning distributed operating systems, through telecommunication service provision up to the application domain. This paper presents brokering of services as an essential service in three important application domains which require dynamic location of objects. In addition, it investigates CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) and Java as possible implementation technologies.","PeriodicalId":217137,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Community Networking 1996. It requires simple design of conceptually complex mechanisms. We study the application of proposed ATM scheduling disciplines to a hybrid fiber/coaxial (HFC) system. Switching networks are based on point-to-point communication links whereas HFC is a shared medium. If we can show that the structural differences between the environments do not affect the functionality of the scheduler a great amount of knowledge on supporting QoS can be imported to HFC systems from switching studies. As an example self clock fair queueing (SCFQ) is embedded in an HFC system. Simulation results show that the scheduler maintains its capabilities in guaranteeing the QoS in the HFC system.","PeriodicalId":217137,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Community Networking 1996. The network architecture and current implementation are discussed. We elaborate on a reference model that is aimed at effectively addressing the challenge of supporting multiple multimedia services over a broadband network with quality of service (QOS) guarantees and exhibits scalability and manageability properties. The model separates user information transport from control, and management. It applies QOS abstractions to simplify resource allocation for multimedia connections, and suggests a service abstraction for supporting service level control and management. Finally, the current implementation status of the testbed is presented.","PeriodicalId":217137,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Community Networking 1996. The integration is realized by association of a groupware server with a video-on-demand server using a video service bridge. The integrated platform enables application developers to develop multimedia application systems supporting both groupware and video-on-demand functions, and provides both real time and stored video naturally synchronized with audio to the group users simultaneously. One particularly interesting example of the platform's possibilities is an automobile sales support system developed on the platform which enables the users to share video images of a running car over an ATM network.","PeriodicalId":217137,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Community Networking 1996. For reasons of implementation flexibility and portability, the system is built on top of existing mail protocols, in particular the simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP). Indeed it is the consumer who has to 'consume' these services. Therefore all the other market players going from content providers over service providers to network operators need a profound insight in the consumer's needs and (latent) wishes. Marketing research is an essential basic step in the creation, development and deployment of multimedia services. The paper describes the results of a survey on the actual attitude of the Belgian residential consumer concerning multimedia services.","PeriodicalId":217137,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Community Networking 1996.
