In consequence, it is extremely relevant to know how lightning activity will change in the future. Although lightning can be monitored from great distances from the storms themselves, global lightning information is available only for the last two decades from optical satellite sensors, making very difficult to predict what will be its future change. In contrast, local thunderstorm observations have been collected for a longer time period and can be used to infer important aspects that can help us to understand what could be expected. In this article, we review the information published on this matter after the International Panel of Climatic Changes (IPCC) report published in 2007, in particular the information related to Brazil. Many studies have shown that higher surface temperatures produce more lightning, but future changes will depend mainly on what happens to the vertical temperature profile in the troposphere and the aerosol loading of the atmosphere. In this report, it will be not considered a possible feedback mechanism by which lightning itself may impact the Earth's climate by producing nitrogen oxides (NOx), a precursor of tropospheric ozone, which is a powerful greenhouse gas. Finally, it is important to emphasize that lightning itself may provide a useful tool for monitoring climate change in the future, due to its nonlinear link with temperature.","PeriodicalId":216871,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XII SIPDA)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125201087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it becomes important to establish lightning protection methods. When a lightning occurred near a PV system, the PV modules have the induction overvoltage due to the lightning. As a result, the power conditioner connected to the PV modules may break down due to the induction overvoltage. The overvoltage depends on the set-up conditions of each PV system and the wirings. The overvoltage must be examined on each PV system. In this paper, the overvoltage occurred in DC wirings are measured when the surge current was injected into a frame of a PV array. Furthermore, the level of the overvoltage and generation mechanisms of the overvoltage was researched.","PeriodicalId":216871,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XII SIPDA)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133670180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the winter from 2011 to 2012, two typical accidents have been occurred. In one of the accidents, a fire occurred inside the wind turbine close to the lightning protection tower on January 28th, 2012. The accident is caused by lightning to the wind turbine itself or the lightning protection tower; the BTB (Back-To-Back) system had remarkably burned out. Another accident is the breakdowns of the anemometers placed on the lightning protection tower on March 24th, 2012. In this paper, the causes and the protection methodologies for those accidents have been introduced. To confirm reliability of the protection methods, experiments of transient grounding characteristics and a simulation model of the FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method have been made.","PeriodicalId":216871,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XII SIPDA)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121418604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tortuosity of the channel is reproduced by means of a numerical algorithm that takes into account statistical characterizations made by different authors observing real lightning channels, so the macroscale tortuosity of the simulated channel is similar to the one recorded in nature. Later it is used an analytic model which allows the calculation of the electromagnetic fields generated by lightning channels with tortuous geometries, once the geometry is known. The electromagnetic fields are calculated assuming a Heaviside step function as the current traveling along the channel. The objective of this work is to analyze two factors that could cause error in the time-of-arrival technique for lightning localization: the change in the electromagnetic wave shape around the channel and changes in the magnitudes of the measured fields for the same distance from the base of the channel but different azimuth angle.","PeriodicalId":216871,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XII SIPDA)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114987019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
