Performance characteristics are presented for both originally reported lightning data and reprocessed lightning data (the new processor was introduced in November of 2012). After the reprocessing, the ENTLN performance characteristics changed (relative to those corresponding to the originally reported data) as follows. The innovation is the use of a very short current reaction lead, which is possible due to the use of transmission line with very low propagation velocity (3% of the velocity of light). The methodology for obtaining the transient impedance from the measurements is discussed and validated. The experimental results regarding transient impedance measurements for two ground electrodes arrangements are presented. The first arrangement consists of two vertical rods and the second one is an actual 138 kV transmission line tower leg, composed by a vertical electrode in parallel with a horizontal wire. Carnegie's curve is a measurement of electrical activity of the planet. It can be obtained by direct averaging the measurements of electric field (in a scale of hours) [1], or can be obtained (in the same scale of time) from lightning activity [2], [3], [4]. The lightning data used to monitor lightning activity in this study was recorded by the sensors of the BrasilDAT lightning location system. The dataset consists of cloud and cloud-to-ground discharges detected within a 100km-radius circle centered on latitude -23.4587° and longitude -46.7667°, corresponding to an area in and around the city of São Paulo, SP, Brazil. The transmission line model is used to simulate both the tower and the grounding system. Different methods of grounding such as vertical rod, horizontal rectangular grounding and the combination of the two are studied under lightning condition. Different conditions of the soil and the effect of soil resistivity are considered and compared. In this paper, first, we describe the calculation results of lightning outage rates of power distribution line. Next, we propose a lightning hazard evaluation method considering the characteristics of each region. In this case, the arrester's automatic disconnector should actuate, disengaging it from the network and indicating the necessity of the arrester replacement. The problem is that these disconnectors present a random actuation, sometimes bursting in normal operation conditions, others, not actuating when necessary. This behavior may be extremely detrimental to the network, as it may indicate the removal of good arresters or, on the other hand, allow the immovability of defective ones.
