An exploratory study was conducted to begin to identify the practices of HS and ECSE teachers in combined, team-taught classrooms. Two separate observations using an interval recording system were conducted in seven combined HS-ECSE classrooms. The classrooms served between 14 and 20 children, including 4 to 8 children with disabilities. Results indicated that the behaviors of HS and ECSE teachers were fairly similar; with both groups using facilitation rather than direct assistance as their primary teaching method, and redirection rather than discipline to suggest alternative responses to children. Overall, the HS teachers engaged in more teaching behaviors than the ECSE teachers; and the ECSE teachers provided most of the monitoring. Observations also indicated that the coteachers in this ...","PeriodicalId":216014,"journal":{"name":"Nhsa Dialog: A Research-to-practice Journal for The Early Intervention Field","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124647207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also documents staff training and supervision needs pertaining to mental health promotion. A collaborative model designed to address the needs of children and parents within the context of the broader family system and community is presented. The model combines the clinical practica and supervision requirements of therapy graduate trainees with the staff training and family support needs of Head Start programs. An illustrative case example derived from the authors' experiences provides an example of the integration of training, family support, staff supervision, and positive family outcomes made possible through this collaboration.","PeriodicalId":216014,"journal":{"name":"Nhsa Dialog: A Research-to-practice Journal for The Early Intervention Field","volume":"254 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121278457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose was to determine the effects of an interactive book reading and story retelling approach (child-centered strategy) used with both small and large groups on story comprehension and narrative-skill development. Eighty-six children enrolled in six Head Start classrooms participated in the 8-week study. No significant differences were found in posttest means on any of the language competence measures analyzed. On the other hand, descriptive data collected through teacher interviews suggested a favorable impact on language and early literacy skills when interactive book reading followed by retelling and repeated reading are incorporated into book-reading experiences...","PeriodicalId":216014,"journal":{"name":"Nhsa Dialog: A Research-to-practice Journal for The Early Intervention Field","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132872551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Children are more sensitive than adults to environ- mental contaminants. Therefore, it is crucial to provide environments free of toxins and potentials for developmental risks. Superfund sites are one possible source of toxic influence. A half-mile radius around 10 Superfund sites in Michigan was selected, and demographic characteristics of the sites are described and compared with demographic characteristics of the surrounding metropolitan areas. In a majority of sites, the concentration of young children was higher than in the surrounding metropolitan areas. Also, in a majority, of sites, the percentage of poverty in the population was higher than in the surrounding metropolitan areas. Healthy development of children requires child friendly ecosystems. It is important to conceptually focus on risk-protective prevention so developmental problem from toxic environments can be prevented by eliminati...","PeriodicalId":216014,"journal":{"name":"Nhsa Dialog: A Research-to-practice Journal for The Early Intervention Field","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127152752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
