While a case can be made that all telecom loads should be powered from the DC source, the fact remains that today's telecom systems rely on AC powered equipment for all sorts of monitoring and control functions. This equipment is just as critical as the DC load, thus high availability AC power is also needed. Supplying this AC is not easy as the utility grid is prone to outages and transients while standard UPS systems usually require a separate battery plant and still fall short on availability. A key reason that AC inverters have not achieved the availability of DC converter systems is the problem of isolation and redundancy. While straightforward in DC systems, the four quadrant operation of inverters along with the need for phase matching complicates the solution for AC systems. Common synchronizing and control circuits are normally required to parallel inverters but these common circuits are vulnerable to single fault scenarios that can bring down the whole system. This paper describes a means to improve the isolation and redundancy of multiple-inverter systems by eliminating the common synchronizing and control circuits.","PeriodicalId":215980,"journal":{"name":"21st International Telecommunications Energy Conference. The method is based on the well-proven theory of symmetrical components. The primary result of the method is a so-called \"characteristic magnitude\" which corresponds to the dip magnitude (remaining voltage) as used for the existing methods to characterise dips experienced by single-phase load. The proposed method may be extended by adding additional parameters including the zero-sequence voltage. For three-phase balanced dips the proposed method corresponds to the methods currently in use and recommended by international standards. The advantages of batteries in this application are their high degree of modularisation, low charging regime losses and not least their wide spread availability. Disadvantages are their weight, high maintenance costs and their high price if storage times of less than one minute are desired and are sufficient like in the area of power quality improvement. As an alternative to lead acid batteries different storage methods have been investigated. Storage systems like new type batteries, superconductive coils (SMES), pressure reservoir storage and supercapacitors have been taken into consideration. But most of these new techniques are still in the early test phase, run with high losses, require high investment costs or space or are not proven enough. The flywheel technology is the most suitable solution for a high reliable storage in the megawatt/second range. Telecommunications lines often pass through remote, uninhabited areas where no infrastructure exists. The power system at an unmanned site therefore must be extremely reliable. It must operate no matter what the weather conditions, and with as little human intervention as possible. Selected circuit concepts are analyzed concerning the operational behavior and the obtainable quality of the mains current. Furthermore, an evaluation of the rectifier concepts concerning utilization of the power semiconductors, rated power of the inductive and capacitive components and of the realization effort in general is given. After evaluating some of the alternatives to active cooling systems, the authors concentrated on the case of an outdoor cabinet and a cooling system based on a heat exchanger. To begin with, the airflow in a telecommunications outdoor enclosure was calculated with the help of a CFD simulation, which allowed a performance to be predicted. After that the monthly energy consumption of active and heat exchanger systems was evaluated for three places, one in northern, one in central and one in southern Italy. The study showed that energy savings about 50% are possible to achieve by replacing active cooling systems with systems based on heat exchangers. Other benefits are that the climate system availability will be higher due to decreased number of moving parts and the initial investment is also lower for a heat exchanger system. The most environmentally friendly kWh is a saved kWh. GNB has found only one monitoring system that is comprehensive in monitoring, analyzing and predicting battery data. The \"intelligent monitoring system\", or IMS, is a low-cost universal battery and power monitoring system suitable for implementation across the network. IMS monitors and reports on actual events, which the power system owner wishes to know about, or other events that (from a battery technology point of view) may affect the condition of the installation. This method is based on the analysis of statistical distribution of the ambient temperature at battery locations. It is an extension of an earlier model. The flexibility of the new method was largely extended through the use of statistical distribution parameters of ambient temperature instead of ambient temperature time series in battery aging calculations.
